Hatch cover repair.
The cover for the fishbox/livewell between the front seats needs a little repair.
The left front corner gives just a little when I step on it. *It doesn't seem to be rotten, just got steped on too hard at some time. * I was thinking that I might take some resin and stick a piece of wood right in the corner to reinforce it, but there is not much room to work. What do you suggest? http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r...101_0103-1.jpg http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r...101_0104-1.jpg |
Re: Hatch cover repair.
I would drill a couple of test holes with a small drill to check for rotted wood. It looks like the plywood core may have delaminated. Go take a look at rotdoctor.com for further instructions.

Re: Hatch cover repair.
Grind back the cracked material and lay a few layers of glass in there, she'll be good as new.

Re: Hatch cover repair.
Like Air said, grind back and use some West System and cloth. She will be fine.

Re: Hatch cover repair.
Guess I'll have to buy a crack grinder. :-/

Re: Hatch cover repair.
Everybody should have a 4.5" grinder.

Re: Hatch cover repair.
I got a cheap one from Harbor Freight and I love it. I think it cost me $17.

Re: Hatch cover repair.
I just took apart two of my hatches. I went around the outer rim of the ply wood with a router and a pit as low as I could go without cutting into the outer shell. If you go that rout extend that plywood out a little closer to the edge. The stock plywood in my hatch was 6x6 inches pieces of plywood. Not sure why they do them this way my replacement will be a solid piece of wood.

Re: Hatch cover repair.
I know what ya mean Still, my foredeck and transom cap were 5x5 inch pieces glassed together. Couldnt believe it when i saw it. I guess they did it like that to make a smooth bow and get good contact with the glass. Not sure.

Re: Hatch cover repair.
here's where i did the one in my 21
epoxyed in the new 10 ply 3/4 wood for gas tank floor panel. http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a46.../21Boat054.jpg http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a46.../21Boat055.jpg epoxyed the floor panel's new wood in and them put glass over it to hold in place. then cut in the access hatch for the fuel lines. i hate a floor hatch to stick up and be a toe buster so i took the router and recessed in the floor hatch. http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a46...1Boat-074S.jpg http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a46...1Boat-075S.jpg http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a46...1Boat-077S.jpg http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a46...1Boat-076S.jpg new wood and new glass cloth dried http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a46...1Boat-078S.jpg http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a46...1Boat-079S.jpg This is where there had to be a 1/4 inch more spacing for fuel fill http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a46...1Boat-080S.jpg http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a46...1Boat-081S.jpg Here's the glass i used for the panel, i shouldn't ever need glass again. This is 42" wide and 250 yard roll. just got plus the other the guy gave too it's 3/8 inch glass in bottom pic heavy heavy crap http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a46...s/MVC-082S.jpg http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a46...s/MVC-083S.jpg http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a46...s/MVC-084S.jpg |

Re: Hatch cover repair.
HHHMMMMM, wonder where I could find some glass to use to repair my hatch here in central NC? ::)
|
Re: Hatch cover repair.
hum i wonder lol i got that roll free *;D they make it in Gibsonville, NC for boat manufactures. when a roll doesn't roll on straight or runs out before a full spool they toss it out. which then you stop by and asking if they have any bad runs they say sure go out back get what ya want lol *;D

Re: Hatch cover repair.
Skools, I guess 10 ply won't warp thats why you used one solid piece rather than 4x4 squares ??? I'm going to have to replace mine soon and it would be a whole lot easier to use 1 solid piece.

Re: Hatch cover repair.
I just did two hatches over the weekend and have around $40.00 in the repair. I used a router and adjusted the bit so only to cut the out side around the wood and not into the cover section. I had a peice of 3/4 ply wood which I cut to fit. I cut mine a a 45 degrees angle as its easier to make the transition with the glass. I cleaned up the underside of the cover with a sander. Then made up a hot batch of standard resin and coated the cover and the bottom of plywood and then put the two together on a flat surface. I placed a couple of cinder blocks on them and let it set over night. The next day I just glassed in the wood and was done. I think for these kind of repairs West System is over kill and you can save money by just using a standard resin. Mine seems very strong and are well sealed.

Re: Hatch cover repair.
the more the ply the stronger and i MAS epoxied that to the glass hatch then layed weight on it for a couple days till the epoxy was dry then glassed it in with poly resin. 1 piece will last longer and stay stronger than several small ones, no seams to crack and allow water in from the seperate pieces.

Re: Hatch cover repair.
Makes sense to me. Believe it or not when I replaced the wood last year I just epoxied a piece of 3/4 right to the bottom of the hatch cover after cutting the old wood out. It has held up really well I just think i should glass over the bare wood to make sure its gonna last.

Re: Hatch cover repair.
yeah plus it will make it much stronger with the glass over it.

here's floor hatch rebuilt bump
