johnson outboard problem
I have a johnson 115 that will not get up to the max rpm the throttle is wide open however it only runs about 2300 rpm instead of 5500-6000. It was running fine, but has sat for about 4 months. Can anyone give me some suggestions ???

Re: johnson outboard problem
compression check....then a spark check.. then come back and let us know the results...then fuel checks last....sitting for 4 months could prob mean fuel probs.
you can buy a compression checker $30 and a spark checker $10 at autozone. |

Re: johnson outboard problem
His johnson won't get up ;D
Sorry, follow the advice above. I'll add, how old is the fuel? |

Re: johnson outboard problem
Was it stored with fuel stabilizer? How does it idle? When you can't get up your JOHNSON ;D, what exactly does it do?(runs rough, surges, chokes, spits swallows)

Re: johnson outboard problem
The compresion check is fine, the spark check is fine. The fuel was just replaced when we replaced the tank last week. The fuel is flowing fine.
It seems to be limited to 2300 rpm it will jump a little like it wants to get up to speed, but it doesn't. I do have another question. water is coming out of the hole where the thermostat purges and it is constant. I think the thermostat is stuck. Here is my question, is there a sensor that would limit it from running WOT if it thinks it is overheating. |

Re: johnson outboard problem
What year engine is it? Have you checked to see if the timing pickup is moving with the throttle linkage? It isn't uncommon for the pickup base to stick after sitting for awhile.

Re: johnson outboard problem
look under flywheel to see that the timing advance hasn't come out it's hole

Re: johnson outboard problem
just to eliminate the obvious, check the fuel vent, and check the primer bulb. then go ahead and run a compresion test and spark check to make sure you don't have anything serious going on, if that checks out ok, then go ahead and rebuild the carbs and fuel pump, clean out the fuel system, even if its not the main problem, its probably due

Re: johnson outboard problem
Apparrently I have an issue with my speed limiting overheating warning(S.L.O.W.) that is causing my RPMs to drop so low. I am not sure why it is activated though. My pump is working fine and the thermostats are working. I guess I will have to grabe a manual tommorow and see how to correct or bypass the problem.

Re: johnson outboard problem
Is the alarm going off? What Year? I have a manual sitting right next to my computer, or I'm sure SKOOLS can site the JOHNNY-RUDE book for us if needs be. Really need to know what you have to help you figure it out here. There is a chance that the warning horn has gone out and is causing your problem, or the diode(depending on year and model) could be blown and shorting the S.L.O.W. sytem to stay in start up self test mode which would limit it to 2500.

Re: johnson outboard problem
Were talking about a FICHT right?
If so you need to hook it up to a computer with the FICHT software to read the codes and then match the code in the manual to tell you which of the many sensors is screwed up. You can get the software and a manual on ebay or order both from your local dealer. It's a hopeless guessing game without hooking into the computer and having the FACTORY service manual. On my 150 FICHT (when I used to own one) . . . RPM reduction (slow mode) kicked in a few times . . . I forget why but there are a number of different combinations that cause S.L.O.W to kick in. Good Luck . . . |

Re: johnson outboard problem
Checked spark again and found both port side cylinders were not firing. Plugs, wires and coils are new and good.
It could only be the stators or powerpacks. I can not find a service manual locally. Can any one tell me what the testing proceedures are for the stators? I believe a stator must be bad. |
