water pump/lower unit

Since I bought the boat last Auguat, I have not changed the water pump. I took her out last week and she ran perfect! even wit the old plugs full of carb fogging crap.
The water preasure comming out of her isn't to strong, and I know I need to atleast change/look @ the impeller.
My question is, how big a project is it? I charge alot of things head on, and I get lucky about 80% of the time, but I dont want to roll the dice with my engine if it is going to be a bigger project/risk then I think.
Thanks for any incorregement or warnings you may have!

Re: water pump/lower unit

You can do it, its a easy job!! Just make sure you get the hidden bolt out under the zinc plate and that the inpeller goes on the right way.

If you don't have a book on your motor I sugest you to go get one. It will be full of info!

Re: water pump/lower unit

I can't remember what motor you have, but if it's OMC, then don't forget about the bolt under the bottom carb; I had a really tough time getting to that one...

Re: water pump/lower unit

Bolt under the carb for a water pump?? ???

Re: water pump/lower unit

LOL, I/O on the brain. I think it's an OB BGA.

Bygracealone 05-17-2007 12:13 AM

Re: water pump/lower unit

Yeah, under the carb... In order to get to the impeller, you need to pull the lower unit off and to pull the lower unit off you need to disengage the shift rod on an OB.

Am I out to lunch again? That happens sometimes... :-/

tsubaki 05-17-2007 08:15 AM

Re: water pump/lower unit

The Mariners are a little easier to change than OMC products because (depending on the years) you don't have to loosen the linkage bolt under the carbs.
Whatever you do don't rotate the shift dog (or gear) and get it out of time. If you don't have a book get one just for tech data. Frosen bolts are always fun. Merc-Mariner has a change in '94 on the water pickup tube pay close attention to the instructions with the pump.
Holler when starting on it. ;D

Re: water pump/lower unit

Personally I'd buy the whole pump kit being it's the first time you've been in the foot, some improvements may have been made prior to '96. Oh, while your at it change the foot fluid. Get the pump and use Quicksilver fluid.

Re: water pump/lower unit

Look in "General" (today on page 2) and under "make my life easier" on page 2 pics of a 75hp Mariner foot. I suggest making one of these brackets.

Re: water pump/lower unit

With mine they have a bolt hidden under that little skeg thing. I mark its location so the skeg is pointing the same direction as when it was removed.

Re: water pump/lower unit

Thanks for all the tips and incorragwement!

You would think I could just order a water pump for the year/make/model of my engine.. But Noooo. If I want to get it @ westmarine I need to remove the old one 1st and them bring it in... Or to order the kist online I nee my engine serial #. So once it stops raing I am going to get the serial number off the negine and order the parts.
Stay tuned!! ;D

macojoe 05-18-2007 02:02 PM

Re: water pump/lower unit

The reason they ask for the serial number is that these motors are made in lots, not years, so if you buy a 2000 Mercury its a 2000, but if you buy it in 2001 then it is a 2001 till they sell that lot out.

At least thats how my mer was (1990) My friend had a mer just like mine and was a 1989, but serial numbers were only off by 78 numbers.

tsubaki 05-18-2007 02:06 PM

Re: water pump/lower unit

Yeah don't buy or order anything without the model #.
You will be surprised of half year changes.

Sean 05-21-2007 08:47 PM

Re: water pump/lower unit

A bet you all knew this question was comming ;D

Were is the serial # on an engine ???
I looked every were ::)

Re: water pump/lower unit

Two places depending on Mfr. Port side (left facing forward ;D) yoke, decal or stamp with rivets and on freeze plug looking thing on top of powerhead (looks like round end of carrage bolt).
I'll try to find pictures on net for your motor.
Hang on, I got a "84 150 Mariner in the yard, I'll get a picture.

I'll have to look and see if your motor also has it stamped into the thing that looks like a freeze plug. Patience ;D

Re: water pump/lower unit

By da way. How you be no u gots a "96 150 mariner? ;D

Sean 05-22-2007 08:05 AM

Re: water pump/lower unit

Alright, it looks like there use to be a Mariner Plate on the Tilt cylender, but it is not eligable.
There are 3 diffrent stickers in the engine with bar codes, the 1st one reads:
7150412ET 2/3
Nitro - MA 150L (2.0:1) 1996
could that be it?

tsubaki 05-22-2007 08:33 AM

Re: water pump/lower unit

If I'm not mistaken the number you are looking for on a "96 should read like this.
OG303046
Look for a plate or sticker with the first two letters "OG"
The last six digits are usually year and serial number.

Sean 05-22-2007 08:50 AM

Re: water pump/lower unit

Hmmm, Nope, none of the nubers I wrote down look like that ::)
I'll have to get a better look after work.
tsubaki, thanks for all of your help!

Re: water pump/lower unit

When I look on Iboats the give me some codes regarding Model # and so on, but I cant decode the codes to find out a around were I need to be.
Does anybody have there decoder ring handy ::)
http://www.iboats.com/Mariner_Water_...view_id.269266
I figure then I will know what numbers to look for on my engine.

tsubaki 05-22-2007 06:00 PM

Re: water pump/lower unit

Those #'s are for 20-30hp motors.

Re: water pump/lower unit

I don't know if this helps or not, but Bigshrimpin posted this link in the links section:

http://www.warnersdock.com/Modelyearlookup.htm

There, concerning Mariners it says, "Mercury/Mariner does not code the model year into the model number or serial number. The model year is determined by the first serial number sold during the model year. Example: Merc 115ELPTO with serial OT123456 could be 2001 and OT123457 could be 2002."

However this location is off an OMC

tsubaki 05-22-2007 06:23 PM

Re: water pump/lower unit

Most manufacturers have put these stamps in the powerhead because of the likelyhood of removal of the stickon barcode labels. If you have them labels most likely there is one of these serial # stamps on the powerhead.

tsubaki 05-22-2007 06:50 PM

Re: water pump/lower unit

This is off a 75hp mariner.
http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w...Picture086.jpg
The location on it is lower rear, starboard side of powerhead.

I am going to take of the lower Unit tomorrow, (was going to doit today but my buddy has all of my tools!!) and then see what the impellar looks like. maybe for know I will just change that out. If i had good preasure I wouldn't even be worried, but @ idle or under say 1500rpms I just have a inconsistent spitting stream ::)
