So I screwed up the ignition wires
So like I don't have enough to do, I go and mess up the wires to the ignition switch :o
Some how I ziged when I should have zaged?? I did one wire at a time and still screwed it up. Now as soon as I turn thr power on and then the key motor starts to turn?? Does anyone have the right wireing for the key?? Thanks!! |
Re: So I screwed up the ignition wires
sorry mj iam a lost soul when it comes to this stuff . but if you need a wooden one built i can help ya out ;D
|
Re: So I screwed up the ignition wires
Just recently did mine.
but I got find the old diagram I drew. wish you luck |
Re: So I screwed up the ignition wires
Switch #11651 by Seachoice?
|
Re: So I screwed up the ignition wires
See if any of this looks right.

Re: So I screwed up the ignition wires
Found the old switch to confirm the terminal designations, this is correct.

Re: So I screwed up the ignition wires
And if you can't translate the diagram.
M (odd type terminal)= the 2 black wires with yellow tracers S = yellow with red tracer C = purple with white tracer A = 2 purple wires M = black wire B = red with purple tracer |
Re: So I screwed up the ignition wires
Just happened to have all this crap still laying on the work bench.

Re: So I screwed up the ignition wires
Wow thanks!!
You are getting to be vauable around here! I guess we will keep you around for awhile! ;) ;D I think the problem is I went from a old withch to a newer switch. The new switch is like the one in the picture and th old switch has a different configration. I just woke from my nap, I will be going out in a hour or so, I will let you know how I make out! Thanks again!! |
Re: So I screwed up the ignition wires
Just woke up myself and getting ready to do some work on the V as well. Good work there Tsub. 8)

Re: So I screwed up the ignition wires
Dang is there an opening for adoption? ;D
|
Re: So I screwed up the ignition wires
Ok I go back out and the switch I am using is a little different then the one you show, but is a 6 pole switch.
But it doesn't have all the markings on it?? So I go to west marine and they don't carry this switch? so I go to there sister store E& B and they say I can order and have next friday I say no thank you!! Boaters World was closed as all the mariners cause it is Sunday >:( So I decide to go ahead and try to get her done. But Mickey has been playing under the dash of this boat!! as you will see in the pictures, I have all the color wires I am supose to have but they have been rerouted some weird way? Here you will see the yellow with red is going to black and into the control box coming back out as black?? My guess is this is the Neutral saftey and the black should go to the yellow and red spot on the switch? http://syncboard.com/albums/album05/...dium.sized.jpg And here is were it goes and comes, it the wire in the right, the wire on the left is the T&T http://syncboard.com/albums/album05/...dium.sized.jpg Then the purple wire comes from the harness and goes to some relay off the switch, but there is a rusted off conection that I can not find any were?? http://syncboard.com/albums/album05/...dium.sized.jpg I am not sure how it was working in the first place?? But I bet this is why the choke switch doesn't work!! So do we have a pic any were on how this is supose to really be wired?? |

Re: So I screwed up the ignition wires
Skools were is the wireing diagram you posted a long time ago??
what you think of this mess?? |
Re: So I screwed up the ignition wires
That would take me some time even with a correct year model diagram. I was expecting a control box situation.
Is it possible the choke switch portion was remote mounted and not in the switch? Do you have the correct book on the motor to be able to use the wires color codes and routing? I'll see what mine has. From what I remember there were a couple of different wire routing capabilities and terminations possible. Skools most likely can pull this off the top of his head *:-/ I can't. Is anything simple with you? ;D |
Re: So I screwed up the ignition wires
Just to clarify for the possibility of having the wrong harness (usually if they connect, it's correct).
What year and hp was the motor that the wire harness and controls came from? And the year and hp of this motor is a "86 225hp. |
Re: So I screwed up the ignition wires
Ha Ha nothing is ever simple with me!!!!!!!!
There is no remote switch for the choke, But that doesn't meant there never was?? I just need that color chart skools put up some time back, but I have looked all night and can't seem to find it?? I have a Clymar book, but eletric is not my strong point! The color one was simple to look at for me the simple guy :D Thanks |
Re: So I screwed up the ignition wires
MJ, I did a yahoo search on evinrude wire color code and Whaler will pop up. Go into it (continouswave.com I think) and click on Johnson/Evinrude color code. I hope this helps.

Re: So I screwed up the ignition wires
Got a wiring diagram in front of me
What you need?? While I'm waiting, I'll try to take pictures of what I think and post them. ::) |
Re: So I screwed up the ignition wires
This is the hose routing for the primer (choke) system
http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w...Picture253.jpg This shows the primer and wire color (purple with white tracer) http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w...Picture256.jpg This one and the next, compare wire colors at the switch and motor harness asto what you have. http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w...Picture255.jpg Note the ignition switches are different in the third and fourth pictures. http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w...Picture254.jpg Give me a minute and I'll point out the stuff. |

Test the old one and see if it works and how the terminals make contact at the different positions (hell it might be good). |
Re: So I screwed up the ignition wires
ok I went o Boaters world today and bought a stupid proff ingnition!!
Comes with all the leads in the right colors! http://www.boatersworld.com/product/...%3Bciswitches- But I still did not hook up the purple cause I do not know what 2 are to go on there and were the second goes to?? But boat started right up, and thats a plus!!!!!!!! |
Re: So I screwed up the ignition wires
I also got a new Cig lighter, new recesed handles for the hatches, (I hate them Carragie bolt handles) all new LED brake lights, eletric horn.
All installed and working today! Just have to figure out the rest of the ingnition I be about tready for the water!! |
Re: So I screwed up the ignition wires
And are the *****s (*****s, I said *****s) (try pimp girls) on board also? ;D
That's it! Are the pimp girls on board? ;D |
Re: So I screwed up the ignition wires
Not yet! But soon.
I have a new Color Chart plotter coming in 2 days, have to finish off a few small things, and should be ready to dunk. After the first dunking Iand all goes well, My son is going to give it the first and only wax job that it will ever see!! Then its Tuna time!! they getting alot here this year!! |
Re: So I screwed up the ignition wires
Not that I've been here long. But.
IS IT A RARE THING FOR MJ TO PUT WAX ON A BOAT????? ;D ;D |
Re: So I screwed up the ignition wires
Yes it is!! But the old owner did 1/2 the boat and it looks like crap, so My sonm going to make them match, then they can go the he!! toghter ;)
|
Re: So I screwed up the ignition wires
Just checking to see if you got all the wires hooked up or not.
The purple(s) could be a couple of things. Is the tach working? Is the overhead horn working? Tach not working, it could be the wire for it. Check the overhead horn by disconnecting it at the motor and with the key "on" (running isn't necessary) ground the wire from the harness to the powerhead. http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w...Picture205.jpg |
Re: So I screwed up the ignition wires
That relay looking thing that has a wire missing could possibly be an overheat buzzer (horn) remote mounted.
|
Re: So I screwed up the ignition wires
Yes CB called last night and said he has a horn and key switch and looks like the purple goes to the horn.
So what wire is the choke?? I thought it was the purple also?? By the way did I say I hate electric yet?? |
Re: So I screwed up the ignition wires
MJ, have you checked out the info at Continuous Wave? This might help:
OMC Outboard Motors The following color coded wiring is often seen in outboard motors manufactured by OMC. This information was developed by Jim Hebert from factory wiring diagrams. Unfortunately, these diagrams are completely lacking in annotation. The identification of the circuits involved was deduced by the author with the assistance of OMC master mechanic David Zammitt of Lockeman's Boat and Hardware. A pictorial diagram of the typical OMC ignition switch wiring is available in a separate article. It illustrates the use of these wiring colors. OMC Under-cowling Wiring ------------------------ (Based on V6 c.1992) RED = Battery positive RED with VIOLET stripe = Fused battery supply to ignition switch BLACK = Battery negative BLACK with YELLOW stripe = KILL Switch (grounded to stop engine) YELLOW with RED stripe = START (Ignition switch to starter solenoid via safety switch) VIOLET = Battery voltage in RUN or START from ignition switch VIOLET with WHITE stripe = PRIMER solenoid LT BROWN = ALARM (grounded on alarm) GRAY = TACHOMETER pulses to gauge from Rectifier/Regulator OMC Stator Coil / Timer Base Wiring ---------------------- YELLOW / YELLOW with GRAY stripe = Battery Charging Coil AC voltage to Rectifier/Regulator on Assembly Engine Block BROWN / BROWN with YELLOW stripe = Charge Coil to Ignition Power Pack BROWN / BROWN with BLACK stripe = Second Charge Coil to Ignition Power Pack ORANGE / ORANGE with BLACK stripe = Power Coil to Ignition Power Pack or OIS Module Green / Violet / White = Timer Base to Ignition Power Pack / Black with White OMC Power Trim and Tilt ----------------------- RED = Battery positive RED with VIOLET stripe = Fused battery supply to remote controls BLUE = UP supply to MOTOR BLUE with WHITE stripe = UP RELAY GREEEN = DOWN supply to MOTOR GREEN with WHITE stripe = DOWN RELAY RED with WHITE stripe = Fused battery to remote switches BLACK with TAN = Trim SENDER isolated ground WHITE with TAN = Trim SENDER isolated fused battery positive ***The link to a nice color diagram of the ignition circuit can be found here: http://continuouswave.com/whaler/ref...ionSwitch.html |
Re: So I screwed up the ignition wires
So, under the dash, the purple goes from the ignition to the buzzer/alarm, to the accessories that should turn on with the key, and to the tach.
|
Re: So I screwed up the ignition wires
ok so what wires are to the choke??
I thought that was purple?? :-/ Boat runs right now, and there is no buzzer at this time I have to go get one. But CB had said the same thing. He keeps saying he is going to come here with his Multimetter and we get her done. But he so busy I keep getting pushed to the curb like the trash! :'( Going to take her for a ride this after noon ;D Thanks all! |
Re: So I screwed up the ignition wires
Can't you use a test light and push in the choke and see which terminal gets power when you push in the choke. It could also be that pushing in the choke provides ground which you could also check with a test light.
|
Re: So I screwed up the ignition wires
Good luck on your test run (probably out there now).
|
Re: So I screwed up the ignition wires
Still you think you are a smart a$$??
I think you are!! I never thought of that! ;) I am getting the boat ready for a ride in 2 hours! Test will have to wait!! |
Re: So I screwed up the ignition wires
Ok, I see that we just posted at the same time LOL - correction - good luck in 2 hours ;D
|
Re: So I screwed up the ignition wires
Look at the diagrams, purple with white tracer is the choke from the switch to the choke (primer) solenoid.
And grace it depends on the years the motor and harness are. Not always will a color code repeat year to year but generally they will stay the same. |
Re: So I screwed up the ignition wires
MJ post loose ends or not sure about termination locations.
WHAT YEAR WAS THE MOTOR REMOVED FROM THE BOAT AND HP or what year wiring harness did you use. There are subtile differences in some of the harnesses and motor electrical terminations. Also are the ignition switch and overheat horn remote mounted from the controls? Pictures suggest this. |
