Crash and Burn
Well, I was notified today that I didnt get the job in Pa. Made it to the top three and they decided to give it to a female. >:( So it looks like I'll be working longer on the V now. So I decided to work on the V and try not to think about loosing out on the job. :'(
Marked out the deck and grabbed the saw and started cutting. The deck is all solid except for the area over the gas tank. I went ahead and cut out the skin as well. I wanted to see the condition of the tank. The tank looked fine on the outside. I pulled teh fuel guage out and found gas. Pumped that out. Was happy that it still smelled like gas and not paint thinner. Inspected teh inside and she looked clean. Since it had gad and I never had the smell of fuel in the bilge, I guess the tank is OK. Hope to finish it up this weekend. http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f1...r/DSC03089.jpg |
Re: Crash and Burn
Wet Wood. *:'(
http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f1...r/DSC03090.jpg Wet foam. Came out easy. http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f1...r/DSC03091.jpg Pumping out the gas. Tank cleaned up a bit. This year tank set up on the 78 V really sucks. If teh tank had to come out, I would have to cut move of teh deck out. >:( http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f1...r/DSC03092.jpg |
Re: Crash and Burn
I ripped down some 2x4's to add under the deck between the hatch and the repair for more support.
Gonna add a few crossmembers as well before the new wood goes in. |

Re: Crash and Burn
Good work!!
But how the heck you going to get that tank out if you had to?? |
Re: Crash and Burn
you wouldn't mines the same way but i just been thinking since my floor is out it would be a good time to move the floor hatch cover to over the tank centered i could just cut the floor and move the hatch cover back.

Re: Crash and Burn

I'm interested in seeing how you put the floor back in and make it look the rest of the floor. garage |
Re: Crash and Burn
Maybe I could slide the tank forward and center it correctly in the hatch. But will I damage the tank trying to break her loose ??? ??? ???
|
Re: Crash and Burn
If you are going to sell it, just put it back like it was, let the next owner fool with the big mods.
As someone who has been beat out for promotions and transfers many times by less qualified, less experienced people, I feel your pain. |
Re: Crash and Burn
sorry about the job buddy, you should apply at "skools boat repair business" maybe he is hiring ::) ;D from the photos you are well qualified

Re: Crash and Burn

Re: Crash and Burn
Hey Hammer,
I know i'm a newbi but I just did finished mine this summer complete stringers/floor/plumbing/wire etc.. I can't really tell form the pics but if the the foam is wet the tank could be shot. If there is any pitting on the top surface then the bottom is worse. Mine was like that and was a 81CC. FOAM SUCKS it traps water and pits the tank. To get the tank out is a pain in the a&$!! you have to get all the foam out all the way around then you can get at the tank. If your planning on selling it soon not sure how far you would really want to go. hope this helps O |
Re: Crash and Burn
Drained the tank the other day. Inspected the inside and appeared to be clean and solid, no debri. Gas was old, but still smelled like gas instead of paint thinner.
Since having the boat, didnt smell any gas or see any in the bilge, so I'm guessing its still in good shape. |
Re: Crash and Burn
Dude, if you're gonna sell it I wouldn't put more than maybe a 1/4 tank of fuel in it. Mine had two fist sized holes as well as a bunch of smaller holes in it and the top of the tank looked great. (The previous owner even showed me.) The foam was the only thing holding the gas in. After filling it completly up the gas worked its way out and I found out about the problem. It's kinda one of those "buyer beware" situations. (Like all used boat transactions!) Just my 2 cents.

Re: Crash and Burn
I pumped out a good 20 to 25 gallons of gas.

Re: Crash and Burn
Hammer, make the fuel system 100% and don't spend more money for a motor. Sell it w/o power. With fuel prices a 250 might turn off some potential buyers. Don't filll the gas tank, just leave it empty. If you do repower, test run the motor with a portable tank (6 gal) for buyers. Let him fill the tank. The new buyer may have to add Sta Bil to remove any condensation in the spring. I think 235 was the highest BIA hp rating for V20 outboards, not I/O's though. We've discussed this before about insurance issues. If it were me, no power, empty tank and a good fuel system. By the way, attorneys love to hear the term "buyer beware". You can't get sued selling a boat w/no power, but you can if you sell a boat that's unsafe and it blows up. Just my $.02
