Re: 5 Star Trailers

Macojoe, I have two different catalogs one is Load Rite Boat trailers www.loadrite.com. the other is 5 Starr Trailers www.5starrtrailers.com. They both have the same address 265 lincoln Highway Farless hills Pa. 19030, which is here in eastern Pa. just outside Phila. I E mailed Kodiak brake co to see what trailers co. built with there products. I beleive the said East coast trailers. I,ve read to many problems with all the different metals that tie down brake co uses, even with their new improved units. Most trailer co. build with their units. I want my next trailer to be tandem, torsion axles, Kodiak Disc, TPR ribbed rollers, led lights and upgraded hardware kit. Crusher

macojoe 03-12-2004 11:33 PM

Re: 5 Star Trailers

And have you found one that has all that yet Crusher??

I found out that load rite and 5 star is the same co.

This is going to be my first new boat trailer and the first trailer with breaks.

So I would like to do it right the first time!!

So I am depending on all you guys to get me set up!!

And you may all send donations to:

All domination acccepted!! ;D

Re: 5 Star Trailers

The brakes that came on my former E-Z Loader tandem were Tie Downs and the SUCKED OUT LOUD!!!!!!!!! >:(
I flushed them after every trip and one still locked up on me. Screwed up a torsion spindle and I lost a wheel. Luckily on a back road and not on the highway. Also, on the lucky side; it was a tandem axle so it didn't hit the pavement. It was only a mile from home, so I made it okay. It was still under warranty to so that was also a lucky brake (certainly no pun intended :))
Crusher, those are good specs to go with. I have the TPR ribbed rollers on my trailer now. They're nice. And the next time my lights go, I'd like to put the LED's on as well. ;)

Re: 5 Star Trailers

Macojoe-Chumbucket, I have a slip In N.J. so I only trailer back and forth two or three trips a year. Just did a rebuild on my single axle Loadrite, brake lines, serge master cyl., tires, inspected brakes. Talked to a small boat dealer Sat., he claims the 5-Starr Trailer is a cheaper (lower quality) version in the loadrite line of trailers. A lot of people are starting to say good things about alumn. trailers being built by other Mfgs., even for salt water use. If I give up my slip and just become a trailer person. I would first recall Kodiak Brake co. see who is building with their products and try building a trailer with the specks I noted in above post. 2nd option because of location would be to spec. trailer from Loasdrite. Order with disc brakes and before or when they crap out change to the Kodaik calipers and rotors, would think brake lines would be veryclose to hooking up. Kodiak brakes would be type that you can seperate the rotor from hub. Also have heard Tie Down change redesigned metal and seals in their products, Still most people feel they are crap. Watch what tires you get do a search on other boardes a lot of tire failure ou there . I went to Goodyear Marthon Radials Good Luck! Crusher

Ok looking for Kodiak, and Marathon tires.

Who would have thought that getting a trailer was going to be so much work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :o

MJ, so you finally found my postS. :)
Now, all you have to do is read them. ;)

We have more to discuss than what I have already written, but you must first get up to speed with this topic so that we can both get on the same page.

macojoe 03-14-2004 11:51 PM

Re: 5 Star Trailers

well I guess I found all your stuff?? Told of all the spec rollers disk brakes not SS but steel as the SS looked thin and softer the steel 38 rollers or so 5700# you paid $2200
I have not heard anything bad as of yet?? So what you want to tell me now??

Seakindly 03-15-2004 05:49 PM

Re: 5 Star Trailers

puter freezin up >:(

MJ, 5STARR AND LOADRITE HAVE SAME COMPONENTS.

EXCEPT THE ROLLER BRACKET ASSEMBLIES. LR IS MORE ADJUSTABLE. 5STARR CAN'T ADJUST THE DISTANCE BETWWEEN EACH ROLLER IN EACH PAIR 13 INCHES SPACE BETWEEN EACH 3 INCH ROLLER. I STILL HAVE TO GET IT RIGHT. 13 INCH SPACE BAD FOR V20 CAUSE ROLLER WANTS TO ALWAYS SIT ON A STEP. THAT IS WHY MY BOAT IS SITTIN WACKED ON TRAILER IN MY GALLERY PICS. IF I CAN'T GET IT STRAIGHT I MAY NEED TO BUY DIFFERENT ROLLER BRACKETS. YOU SHOULD TAKE PICS OF BOTH SO YOU CAN COMPARE.

Seakindly 03-15-2004 06:31 PM

Re: 5 Star Trailers

crusher did some good research (as usual) on the brakes and tires. 5starr only came with tie down and regular tires. i will be looking into replacing with kodiak and radials when the time comes. although not goodyears because i have had bad experience with goodyear including a highway blow out with my old van (1st 7000 miles - bought new).

HEY CRUSHER, DO YOU KNOW WHAT GRADE ALUM ALLOY THEY ARE USING? JUST CURIOUS.

macojoe 03-15-2004 07:22 PM

Re: 5 Star Trailers

Is this your only problem with the trailer?? I might go with a loadright if that is the case??

I have been hearing some good things as far as the Venture trailers also?

The Karavan trailers have a small amout of rollers and they only come with drum brakes. So they are out!!

So I am looking at so far: Load rite, 5 starr, Venture.

I have heard good things about Loadmaster but I can't afford the cash that they are costing!!

And some one thur a Roadmaster Alum. it to the mix now for me to check out.

I am so confussed ???

Re: 5 Star Trailers

Seakindly, Just reading all the boards about trailers. A lot of good conments about alum I beam trailers. I don't know what alloy they are using. My consern would be corrision? Torsion axles, Radial tires, Disc brakes, seem to be the most popular items in that order. Torsions axles for their ride, no leaf failure, if you lose a bearing or hub you take a big nut of spindle to replace it, and you on your way. Tires everybody reports failure with all makes of tires its real crap shoot. I think all the different towing conditions trailers are subject to and the fact that we all don't want to admit how much our rigs weigh (EXTRA BEER). Spec tires for the total weight of your rig keep air pressure correct. I'm with Macjoe confussed and hoping this will all be sorted out by the time I need to purchase. Crusher

Re: 5 Star Trailers

MJ - When I was looking around I really liked the galvanized Continential Trailers.

But . . . If you're looking for inexpensive trailers.

nextrail
http://www.nextrailofamerica.com/

TA Mahoney's in Tampa, FL gave me a quote of $1290 for a brand new galvanized tandem axel trailer (no brakes). Not sure if they can ship'em north.
http://www.fishing-boating.com/mahoney/

I also heard that Northeast Marine Industries, Inc. in oxford, ma sometimes has good deals on trailers.

chumbucket 03-16-2004 10:25 AM

Re: 5 Star Trailers

MJ, IMO, I think you should just go with the best quality you can afford right now. Look for one that has a good solid frame and roller setup. As far as some of the upgraded components go, replace them with the better stuff later on when the finances are a little better.

Seakindly 03-16-2004 05:12 PM

Re: 5 Star Trailers

MJ, THAT IS THE ONLY DIFF BETWEEN THE LOADRITE AND THE 5STARR AND IT MAY NOT EVEN BE A PROBLEM AS I HAVEN'T FINISHED TRYING TO ADJUST THE ROLLERS. THE FRAME AND EVERYTHING ELSE IS THE SAME. THE PRICE WAS 500 BUCKS LESS.

I HAVE HEARD NOTHING BUT BAD THINGS ABOUT VENTURE BUT CAN'T REMEMBER ANY OF THEM AS I ELIMINATED THEM REAL FAST.

MJ, I WAS IN A HURRY SO I BOUGHT NEW. I HAD TO GET MY V21 OUT OF THE SELLERS BACK YARD FAST. YOU, ON THE OTHER HAND, HAVE THE LUXURY OF SHOPPING AROUND FOR A GOOD DEAL ON A QUALITY USED TRAILER. MAY/JUNE ARE PROBABLY THE BEST TIME TO BUY A USED TRAILER AND SEPT/OCT THE WORST. YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO FIND A GOOD USED ONE, AND AS CB SUGGESTED, UPGRADE THE COMPONENTS OVER TIME. IN THE MEANTIME, CONTINUE YOUR RESEARCH.

Re: 5 Star Trailers

Just called the guy. He got the trailer from the Mass martime acution about 2 years ago and parked were it sits right now. He has never used it, doesn't no what kind it is, but says it was for a 20 foot boat. Not sure on the weight that it will hold. But it is a single axle.

I am going to take a ride tomorrow afternoon to go look at it. i will keep you posted
Thanks

macojoe 03-18-2004 06:51 PM

Re: 5 Star Trailers

Went and looked at the $1000 trailer today! >:(
I called the guy and asked some ?? before I went all the way there.
It is a nice trailer, needs new Boat tires and rims but besides that it looked ok for a 2500# trailer. Not to sure as there is nothing on the trailer to iD it. But looked like a 18 foot boat 25oo# or so. And a far cry from $1000!! You can buy that new for $1500

The search goes on!!

Re: 5 Star Trailers

Well CB I called Coastline and talked to a guy named Rick and we had a chat and in the end I am talking $2395 for roller and $2295 for bunk.

He said spend the Xtra $100 and get the rollers. Bunk good for storage, more hull support, and roller good for everyday use, getting in and out water.

:-[ :'( :-/ ???

Seakindly 03-20-2004 03:31 PM

Re: 5 Star Trailers

What do you get for 2395?

chumbucket 03-20-2004 07:07 PM

Re: 5 Star Trailers

Well their prices have gone up from when I talked to them a year and a half ago.
If it's only $100 more for rollers, I guess that's the way to go. I would have thought the difference would be more than that. It used to be.
Decisions, decisions. ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ???
