It's time to re-power.
The hull is a 1995 V-21. I currently have a 150 Johnson. It's a strong engine but I need more range.
I can get a really good deal on a new 140hp Suzuki, but I don't think that's enough power. I would really like a Yamaha F150, but don't want to put that much money into it. I'm considering a Yamaha 150 or 200 HPDI. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks, Will |
Re: It's time to re-power.
I dont know about the V21 under the floor. In an older boat I think it would be easy enough to add fuel tanks. The new direct injected motors are supposed to be as close as a half mile to the gallon compared to the four strokes. I would try factory reconditioned, with waranty for the money.

Re: It's time to re-power.
You can get some savings by trying to find a leftover 2004 Yamaha F150. I've seen some around for $9999.
I've been looking at a leftover 2004 2-stroke carbed Yamaha for $7200. How much range are you lookin for? You have a 60 gallon tank right? |
Re: It's time to re-power.
Yes. 60 Gallons. I'm looking at 100-140 miles round trip.

Re: It's time to re-power.
Suzuki now makes a 175HP four stroke. Bill Mc ;D

Re: It's time to re-power.
Mac just hit the nail on the head!!!...from all I've read and heard THAT would be the perfect combination of power and fuel economy you're lookin' for to go on your boat...it aint gonna be cheap, but the truth is if range is your main objective you're gonna pay for it...I think FI 4-stroke is gonna deliver BEST fuel economy...if you're gonna stay w/2-stroke, look hard at E-Tech...IMHO... ;) :)...
Will...I got a buddy w/boat at Tollers Cove...where you runnin' your V20 that kinda range?...off?...or a girlfriend at Hilton Head?... ;D... |
Re: It's time to re-power.
It's going to be E-tec or hpdi for me when the time comes . The 175 E-tec weighs no more than my current 1994 150 yamaha . I most likely will go with the E-tec unless I can save big money with the hpdi by being able to use my current guages , control box, ect .

Re: It's time to re-power.
Willmorg - Search for fugazi - when repowered with a 140 suzuki/johnson and he was somewhat disappointed with the top end speed and wimpy acceleration.

The wife wouldn't be to happy about the girlfriend, but maybe with the extra speed I could get away with it. ;) Mostly offshore from Remley's Point to 100+ feet of water. |
Re: It's time to re-power.
In the gallery, in the 1994 Wellcraft manual for the V21, it shows that with the 60 gallon tank and a Yamaha 150 o/b (carbed) the cruise range is 199 miles at 8.0 gph. Is that Johnson a pre-1986 model??
That is well over the 100 - 140 miles you are looking for. Unless that Johnson is pretty old, it should give you that kind of range. But, on second thought, I think I know what you are saying cause you'd like to at least have a little left over after 100 to 140 miles rather than using every last drop! |
Re: It's time to re-power.
I just received my new copy of Great Lakes Angler and there is an article on the Suzuki 175. I'll try to email you the article. I'll need your email address. bill Mc ;D

Re: It's time to re-power.
Yeah, Will...lotta GREAT bottom fishin' at 90' out there and this time of year a feller could have a ball in a V20 Kingfishin'...you're after what I had in mind when I added 2-40 gal(removed 2-20s) tanks to mine...at the time I's pushin' w/an '86 gas-guzzlin' Rude...but now there's plenty... ;D...

Re: It's time to re-power.
I replaced my old Evinrude 155 with a Yamaha 200 HPDI, and I love it. I am averaging 5 GPH, which is better than my old motor! ;D

Sounds like a good fishin' trip...those Sea Bass are the TASTIEST darlins in the bunch!! ;D...
Yeah, I wanna do it in mine too, but my wife says she's got a headache!!!... ::)... :P... |
Re: It's time to re-power.
A low hour Yama OX66 would be a good motor, I hear the 200 HPDI's are a solid motor, Merc I believe has a 175/200 hp Verado. A friend who has a Sweetwater dealership in Sanibel Fla say's the Etec by Bombardier is the heat (maintenance and fuel wise)...
Dont know, I'm partial now because I run the Yamaha HPDI and it's been a good motor. Take a look at Ed's Marine Superstore, they usually run some decent sales on motor's new and clearance: http://www.edsmarinesuperstore.com/ |

Re: It's time to re-power.
Pipe , does the boat seem to handle the weight of the hpdi well ?
|
Re: It's time to re-power.
It took a little getting used to. At rest the bow sits slightly higher than before, because I see a little more bottom paint as I look forward. The additional weight at the transom means it handles a little different, too, especially at speed in a good cross-wind. At first I thought I might have to add trim tabs, but after getting used to it I'm not sure I need them. But I'll say this much -- added weight plus added horsepower plus the change to hydraulic steering made her feel like a completely different boat. The power is awesome! I just had to get accustomed to all the changes.
|
Re: It's time to re-power.
hey, Pipe...open her up every chance you get... 8)...

Re: It's time to re-power.
Oh, I do! ;D I'm not a full-throttle-all-the-time kind of guy, but I love to open her up now and then and really make time. But what I REALLY enjoy about this motor is that it jumps up on plane so fast! What's more, I can stay up on plane at what seem to be slower speeds than before. With the old motor, and especially when any slime accumulated on the bottom, I often had to keep her at or near full throttle just to stay up on plane. Of course, that old motor was pretty wore out! ;) ::)

Re: It's time to re-power.
Sounds like you put together a good power/weight combo...and a PURDY one at that...dyin' to have 200 screamin' ponies on mine...still thinkin' E-Tec's small-block 200 is best for my 20" transom...weighs less than what's there now...when I get it, I'll come down and we can RACE!!!...whadda good idea... ::) ;)...

Re: It's time to re-power.
Let me know when you're coming -- so I can clean my bottom! ;D
