Evinrude Etec
Saw the 30 minute informercial. Etec sure looked cool.
Anybody aware of how they have done so far? |

Re: Evinrude Etec
while all three of those shots to the nortons look bitterly painful, that right uppercut is BRUTAL !!!
|
Re: Evinrude Etec
I tell you it's a realistic commercial though isn't it. If you want to repower your boat with a 2 stroke motor how much is it going to cost you now, never mind a 4 stroke
They should be ashamed thieves |
Re: Evinrude Etec
I guess I got a swift one comin' on this Honda...ooooooooooooo :o :-X :'(
I know...I'll break down and sell it to Willy just B4!!... ;) ;D ;) ;D ;) ;D... |
Re: Evinrude Etec
Those 8x10's of me and the Poobah got to you huh ;D
|
Re: Evinrude Etec
Well GEEZ, Willy...ya SAID ya WANTED it... ;D :-*...
|
Re: Evinrude Etec
I have a long way before I will be droping any hard cash on a 4 stroke!!
I will run the last 2 stroke before I will get one. To heavy and to much $$$$ I am just a poor man :'( |
Re: Evinrude Etec
Not according to Stinky ;D
|
Re: Evinrude Etec
Stinky is the guy that is really loaded!
Must be all the stock he bought in thong wares?? |
Re: Evinrude Etec
I've watched that video many times and never noticed the guy at the very end that come in looking at E-tecs...he's covering his crotch!
Is it true that E-Tec oil cost $30/gallon? |
Re: Evinrude Etec
These e-tecs are no tickle to the wallet either! I use this site as a gauge (usually pretty close to what most of us can expect to pay.... except for those who have "connections" :P ).
E-Tec http://www.edsmarinesuperstore.com/evinrude.htm Yamaha http://www.edsmarinesuperstore.com/yamaha.htm The weight difference between the e-tec and yamaha (both hpdi and 4 stroke) seem minimal. http://www.evinrude.com/en-CA/Engine...ications/S150/ yami 4 stroke http://www.yamaha-motor.com/outboard.../63/specs.aspx yami hpdi http://www.yamaha-motor.com/outboard...s/7/specs.aspx Couple of points of interest: 1) The E-tec 150/175/200 all weigh the same (I'm assuming same block) 2) All the Yamis where heavier than the E-tec by about 40 lbs or more. 3) the yami 150 4 stroke was about the same weight as the yami 150 v-max hpdi. 4) while I don't know what the difference is between a yami that's labeled v-max hpdi vs on that's just labeled hpdi (the 200 HP comes in both) the 150 was only offered in the v-max flavor. 5) I'm assuming the E-Tec is meaning maintenance is cheaper, because the cost to get one is more of a shot to the Nortons than any of the comparable yamahas.... :-/ Just thought I'd share what my curiousity because of the thread lead me to find ;D Oh yeah, I'm starting to like the E-Tecs more and more, but I still have a long way to go before I have to decide. I guess the first thing I should look into is some good Norton protection! :o ;D :o ;D |
Re: Evinrude Etec
they have the yamaha 150 in a reg non- v-max
|
Re: Evinrude Etec
Those are carb'd right?
|
Re: Evinrude Etec
Just looked at the regular yamaha 150. It has the same wieght as the e-tec 150/175/200...

Re: Evinrude Etec
I am seriously thinking about repowering my V20. Although my 150 Yammy is still running OK, the Etec looks really good to me. The reason I like the Etec is that it is a 2-stroke. IMHO 4-strokes weigh too much and have too many moving parts and alot more regular maintenance. I can still remember a Nissan van that I had that blew a composition timing belt at 40,500 miles and the warranty expired at 36,000. The engine really went KABANG!!! You guessed it, I don't like 4-stroke non-metal timing belts. Nissan only fixed it after I spent very significant money on lawyer fees and alot of bad-mouthing!!!
The oil for an Etec is expensive but Jonnyrude says it uses alot less. I am trying to find out what the Etec oil really is. Maybe it is 100% synthetic?? When it comes to oil, there seems to be a generic equivalent to all of it. However, I think that for warranty reasons I would use the $30 oil!!! The Etec also gets high marks for clean running and it uses less gas. My local dealer sells both Yamaha and Jonnyrude and he has not had one Etec back for warranty repairs. (So he says!) I am not really that adventurous and I will wait until the jury is totally in on the Etec unless the Yammy goes bang unexpectedly!! |
Re: Evinrude Etec
Well, sure. Why repower until you have to, unless you have $$$ to burn. Better the devil you know . . .
|
Re: Evinrude Etec
Well I agree with pipe!! if it isn't broke don't fix it!!
You may not be sold on four strokes, but I am not sold on ETec, way to much computeration (is that a word) They making them like cars now, you have to have a computer just to know if it is running right or not! They making them so the back yard guy can no longer work on them!! Nope I have a 89 Yamaha and as long as i can fix myself, get parts, I am going to run it! |
Re: Evinrude Etec
I think that all of the new outboards are very computerized and don't think that we can get around that. I hope that my Yammie will last forever also, but I don't think that is likely!!!

Re: Evinrude Etec
I went to the boat show here this weekend. Lots of nice stuff for sure!! I especially like the 36 bertrum. only 537k and 3200/month. ::)
There was one thing I drooled over heavily though..: http://www.forumpictureprocessor.com...itled_17_1.jpg |
Re: Evinrude Etec
Like a piece of sculpture ;)

Re: Evinrude Etec
Oh Willy was hard indeed.
Pun intended. :D |
Re: Evinrude Etec
Just for kicks, Suzuki has a stell timing chain that runs in an oil bath. My knock on the etec? Most common failure for 2 strokes would be oil failure, carbon, or overheat. The etec running at 100 to1 oil has no margin for error (my opinion) in the oiling system. Hell, all the new motors scare me but right now I'd be a Suzy fan if my 88' Merc went Kaboom.

Re: Evinrude Etec
Ditto on the Suzi's....IMO best motor out there right now.
|
Re: Evinrude Etec
I love them new Zuks too. I have had Zuk motorcycles and always loved em.
What do yall think about the older Zuks though. I seen this one on Ebay yesterday and thought if only I was outboard ready I might be interested in it. Would you buy it for the 3500 buy it now? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1995-...20356064QQrdZ1 |
Re: Evinrude Etec
Hey Air the E-TEC's with run without oil as well. In case you loose oil the motor doubles the fuel and turns back the throttle. They have been tested 6 to 8 hours on no oil @ 3800 rpm and no problems
|
Re: Evinrude Etec
NO Stink
run from older Zuks they had major major issues, Only the newer ones built by OMC are trusty. |
Re: Evinrude Etec
ok thanks Skools. Does 95 qaulify as an one with problems?
They just look so big and tuff ya know? ;D |
Re: Evinrude Etec
Stink, I'd shy away from the 95' Suzy. It's not that it's a bad motor. Parts won't be easy to find and, it's old school. If I was gonna buy a carbed outboard, or EFI, it'd be a merc, yammy, or johnyrude. My opinion of course. Skools point about the Etec is very interesting. Wish they didn't cost so much.

Re: Evinrude Etec
Suzuki is good from the end of 1999 up ;D
|
Re: Evinrude Etec
I consider myself lucky to have bought one of the last brand new carbed 2 stroke Yamaha 150's made in 2005.
|
Re: Evinrude Etec
I would consider myself lucky if you would give it to me. or trade it for say.......a fast peak of me naked! 8)
|
Re: Evinrude Etec
Blue I would advise you to say nothing at this point ;)
