A Few Questions...

I have an aluminum tank on my V20, she is a 1987 anyone have any idea the fuel cap?
Also, I had to pump out the tank due to bad gas, I am on my 3rd fuel water seperator, because of a what looks like alge, I am gonna go ahead and slap the Racor on her and be done with it, and monitor it.
Also, I bought a Hummingbird Matrix 17 fishfinder, do any of you guys have this unit and if so, where is the best transducer mounting area?,,,,Dirk

If it's under deck, should be 60 gallons

1987 should be a 60 gal, the early under deck tanks were 40

Tank has alge?? That means it had water for some time in it??
I would remove the deck cover and the float, clean with what ever I could with some carb cleaner, and then stck rags in there to get out allthe stuff as best I could then use the Racor with some adsdative in the gas.

This probably ain't what ya wanna hear, but if mine was fillin' up a filter w/ algae, I think I'd have to PULL and replace or clean that puppy :-/....you can do a thousand other things to make it a reliable boat, but if the tank ain't clean, it'll never be dependable...which is pretty important for a boat ... ;)...

Hammer...you SURE it's only a 40??...only time they used 40s was late 70s when they were transitioning from saddle tanks to bellys...has yours been replaced by previous owner??

Re: A Few Questions...

I have an 84 V20 and it has a 60 G aluminum tank. My tank is foamed in and I have installed a 24 G plastic tank that just fits in my live bait well. The reason for the 24 G tank is that the 60 leaks. The end of this season I intend pulling the 60 and either replacing it with a plastic belly tank or sealing the aluminum tank with Por 15 tank sealer. Antique car guys swear by the sealer and it is not effected by ethanol fuel. Car restorers like the sealer because "where are you going to buy a replacement fuel tank for a 1928 Pierce Arrow"? The sealer works with aluminum or steel tanks and costs about $150 for cleaner, etcher, and enough sealer for a 60 G tank! I will use the sealer if the 60 G tank isn't too far gone.

Geek, I have a 84 cuddy that the fuel tank leaked. It was bad on the bottom and i had to pull it to see just how bad.

Find someone to make you another and use yours as a temp. I paid $325 i think for another 60 alum. and i'll never have to do it again.

just my 2 thoughts

Hammer, you should have a 60 too.
Check the brochures in the History section.

Hmmm, you have me wondering now. With 36 gallons in her, im just around 3/4 of a tank. Unless my float needle is off maybe ??

I HAVE AN 1980 AND I SUCKED ALL THE OLD GAS OUT AND FILLED WITH NEW I PUT 58 GALLONS IN HER I COULD HAVE LOWERED THE NOSE AND GOT A FEW MORE IN

Re: A Few Questions...

Hammer, I like my gauges, but I wouldn't depend on 'em to figger out what capacity the tank is...I'm thinkin' (and hopin') you gonna find out she's a 60...

W/ 36 gals in her, how much more will she hold??...

Blue_Runner 06-28-2006 05:21 PM

Re: A Few Questions...

Fuel guages are RARELY right on boats. I'm sure more than 50% are off. Why they can't make them as reliable as car fuel guages I'll never know.

Hammer, you almost definitely have 60 gallons. Fill er up! I'd bet on it! 8)

Re: A Few Questions...

I guess she is a 60 gallon. She the factory tank. Looked for a stamping on sticker showing the size with no luck.
Hope to fill her up this weekend and get a dive in.
