Top Speed??
What is everyone seeing for performance numbers . . top speed . . . cruising speed . . . fuel consumption @ cruising, etc. ?
|
Re: Top Speed??
My V20 center console with a 150 Yamaha tops out at right around 37 mph at 5000 rpm. I'm going to be looking into the prop to make sure I've got the right one because I should be turning a litlle higher top end than that. Also have to make sure the tach is reading correctly. Cruise speed at 4000rpm is right around 28 mph. I haven't got a feel for fuel consumption yet. Once I get things dialed in correctly, I'll get a reading on that as well. But, so far, I'm real pleased with the performance and fuel consumption based on the amount used vs. speed and distance travelled. Seems to be fairly economical relative to what I've owned for boats in the past.

Re: Top Speed??
Chumbucket , I have a V20 C.C. with a 150 yamaha as well . It will turn 5250 rpm. The speedometer tells my that I am doing 42-44 mph depending on the load. I had it out yesterday for the first time this year . If these gas prices don't come down , I will see very little of that 5250 range this year . $1.959 @ Wrightsville Beach , NC

Re: Top Speed??
>:( I'd hate to see what dock prices will be this year! I'll be trailering my boat this year anyways. We're at $1.65 on the street pumps here in Mass right now.
What year is your V20 Fisherman? Any modifications to the layout? I'm always interested in other peoples ideas as well. |
Re: Top Speed??
I have a 1994 , the last year for the center console . It is almost a tough mounting the electronics on this modelas the steplift . The console does not have as much mounting space as my friends 1986 cc. It also seems a little lower . When I bought the boat last year it had a small Apellco loran and a Hummingbird fish finder. I am thinking about taking those off and installing one of the new color gps/sounder combos . That should free up a little space as well as giving me a much better fish finder . Other than a tight space console I love the boat . I had a 17' Whaler before the V20 and I out grew all of that pounding ! My family had a 1974 Steplift that I grew up with . We were on the third motor when my dad sold it. I looked for almost a year to find my current boat . I found it in Ft Walton Beach Fl. The boat could pass for 2 years old . It is just warming up here in NC and I plan to get to work on it soon .

Re: Top Speed??
Hey Guys,
Performance stuff on the V-20.. I have a 1987 V-20 CC with a 200 HP Suzuki EFI & a T-top. I am still trying to get the right prop after adding the top. Before the top I was turning 5200ish RPM and getting upto 53 MPH. I am now turning 4800ish and in the 45 MPH. You guys are right about this season and expected gas prices!! There will be a tight eye on the RPMs for sure! Great site! :P |
Re: Top Speed??
I finally got my 1991 V-20 CC on the water last thursday at a local lake. Just wanted to check out all systems before heading offshore.
Max speed with 1992 200 hp Yamaha was 48.9 on GPS at 5300 RPM. No T-top 1/2 tank of fuel 1 person. Boat handled great but really needs hydraulic steering. I could trim engine untill it was nuetral steering. I just prefer not to have any torque steer. I am installing a Navman Fuel flow system today. I will post all performance and fuel consumption numbers next week some time. After reading directions it looks very easy. Ordered T-top/leaning post last friday. Will take one to two months before intall is done. Just before tuna season I hope. Has anyone installed an additional fuel tank inside the console yet?? Not sure if I am going to do this yet. Want to get fuel numbers first. I would like to get a 200 mile range if possible. Charlie |
Re: Top Speed??
Just finished my conversion of a 1974 V20. It now has a 175 hp Yamaha. I have two 20 gal gas tanks in the sides. I don't know how this system is going to work but will post when I get in the water.
What size props are you guys using?? I was using a 17 pitch when it was a I/O. I have gone to michagain site and sized the prop there and they say I need to use a 15 pitch?? The motor I bought came with a nice SS 19 pitch. But I don't think it will do well. I will try it and see. With the I/O set up I use to get just about 30 mph with full tanks and 2 people. and about 3 1/2 miles per gal. I am sure that I will use more gas now that I have a outboard. |
Re: Top Speed??
MJ, Try the 19 pitch prop before buying anything new. Most of the Yammis use either a 17 or 19 pitch prop. I would try the 19 first and if you're close to 5200 or better, stay with it. If you only need a couple hundred more RPM's, then try a 17. If you think you do need a 17 pitch, let me know before you buy one. I think I've got an extra laying around. It's not the best but it would certainly tell you if it would work or not.

Re: Top Speed??
Thanks alot chumbucket. I hope to do a water test by the end of the week, if the weather lets me. I was going to try to stay with the 19 anyway, if it worked.

Boat test
Just as an FYI my Yamaha manual says 4500 -5500 as the WOT setting. Seems very strange to have such a wide range on RPM for WOT.
Ran my boat a local lake this last weekend with the Navman system and a Lowrance 350 GPS/FF/Plotter, full fuel ( 60 gal ) 1 person, no T-top, med load of gear. Using the Boating Mag test profile ( 90% of fuel cap 54 gal.) Boat had maximum range of 186 statute miles. Test results are as follows. RPM * * * * *MPH * * * * *GPH * * * * *Range * * * * *MPG 1000 * * * * *5.3 * * * * * *2.4 * * * * * *119 * * * * * * 2.2 2000 * * * * *8.2 * * * * * *4.5 * * * * * * *98 * * * * * * 1.8 2500 * * * *13.0 * * * * * *6.1 * * * * * *115 * * * * * * 2.1 3000 * * * *20.5 * * * * * *7.1 * * * * * *156 * * * * * * 2.9 3500 * * * *28.3 * * * * * *8.2 * * * * * *186 * * * * * * 3.4 4000 * * * *33.5 * * * * *10.3 * * * * * *176 * * * * * * 3.2 4500 * * * *38.6 * * * * *12.0 * * * * * *174 * * * * * * 3.2 5000 * * * *43.4 * * * * *15.6 * * * * * *150 * * * * * * 2.8 5400 * * * *48.5 * * * * *20.1 * * * * * *130 * * * * * * 2.4 It's nice to know I can get a 150 mile range with a wide range of speeds. *After looking at the numbers I am going to add a 19 gal permanent tank under the console. We regularly fish 30-50 miles offshore for tuna and will need the extra fuel for trolling and saftey margin. I ordered a T-top to be made locally and that will increase fuel usage also. * These tests were made under ideal conditions, no wind, 75 degrees and on a lake with no swell or chop. Please do not use these numbers for your boat. * I can say that I have been very satisfied with the Navman unit so far. It says to mount sensor in a vertical position for best results but I mounted mine right above the gas tank in a horizontal position and put a small fuel filter right in front of it, seems to work great. The features are much better than the FloScan that I had in my last boat. You get current consumption,total, trip & fuel remaining w/alarm. You do have to reset the fuel remaining after each fillup. You can also set it to read Liters, Imp. gallons and US gallons and also has a calibration mode if readings are not exact. My Floscan system was consistently off by about 3-5 % over and under. This thing a great buy at $149.00 from outerbanks.com no tax and no shipping charges. No I don't work there but I would if I could get a big discount ;D Charlie Buzzetti |
Re: Top Speed??
Hey Charlie, I like the sound of that Navman. It's a good price for all those features. I may have to look into one myself. ;D
PS, you should get that bracket in a couple of days. ;) |
Re: Top Speed??
I also forgot to mention that it fits into a 2 1/8" hole. So it takes very little room on the dash. It does need about 3.5" behind dash.
I like knowing exactly how much fuel is in the tank. I have had std gas gauges lead me astray before. Thanks for the update on the bracket, it's time to start looking for the kicker to put on it. Cbuzz |
Re: Top Speed??
Wow I guess you no your boat. I would like that kind of system. But I have spent so much this year with the conversion and all that it anit happening this year.
CBuzz what size motor do you have?? 5000 rpm 43.4 mph. My I/O 165 had all it could do to get me to 30 mph. I have been hoping that this 175 Yamaha would inprove that some. And sounds like it will. Of corase there are differentinces in all boats even if they are the same. But I have a 1974 cuddy and it is a heavy boat. |
Re: Top Speed??
MJ, From my experience in having both outboards and I/O's, unless you get into high performance motors, an outboard of equal horsepower as an I/O will give you much better speed. It's mostly due to the power to weight ratio.
My guess is, you'll top out at around 40-45 mph with that 175 Yammi provided you get the rpm's where they need to be. I get around 38 mph with my 150 but I'm not sure I'm getting full WOT (need to experiment more once I splash) and cbuzz is getting just over 48 mph with his 200 hp. So you should end up somewhere in between. As we discussed before, you may find that you'll need trim tabs to give the stern a little more lift and a better attitude because of the offset of the bracket. Weather's not looking too good and neither is the extended forcast for the weekend. When do you think you'll be splashing? |
Re: Top Speed??
1991 V-20 CC, 1992 200 Yammie.
I had the opportunity to watch the boat from shore as a friend drove it around. I was impressed by the way it looks in the water at speed. Bow up 3-5 degrees and riding well back on the hull. Very similar to the way a large sportfisher looks at speed. I have yet to get it on the ocean. It has been very windy here and the salmon have not really started to bite yet anyway. Forecast for this week is increasing winds thru weekend up to 30 knots. Only blowing 10-20 now with a 4-6 foot swell plus wind chop. The good side is it doesn't blow as hard in the summer and the Albacore tuna are starting to show up in San Diego. Should be mid June before we get a shot at them here. |
Re: Top Speed??
CBuzz,
* *Thanks for posting the stats with your new boat!! * They (v20's) really do look great. * |
Re: Top Speed??
iI am repowering a v20 with a 200 optimax. I cannot find what shaft length to use. HELP..
|
Re: Top Speed??
Pbain you will need a 25" I belive. You measure from the top of the transom were the motor will rest down to the very bottom of the boat (center) this will be your shaft leanth. What size shaft do you have on there now??
I have repowered with a Yamaha 175 and a gill bracket. I have used it anough now to coment on it. I LOVE IT!! I get 5000 rpm and I get 40 mph when I am alone. I curise at 4000 to 4400 and go about 32 to 35 much nicer then the old I/O. Now I am not sure on the excat milige but I go from Green pond Falmouth to Laucs Shgolas which I no this is a 13.5 mile run one way. 27 mile round trip plus all the running back and foruth after a drift. One day of this I use about 15 to 18 gal of gas. The old I/O used about 13 to 15 so I feel that I am doing ok. |
Re: Top Speed??
thanks for the help. I had an older 200 merc. and wasn't sure if they measured the same.
|
Re: Top Speed??
1974 20-v dual-console w/1986 150 hp evinrude...top down w/lite load gettin' 39 mph(gps) at 5300 rpm
gas goes gluck,gluck.gluck...vent pipes on fuel tanks suck bugs and small birds from 3' away at WOT |
Re: Top Speed??
r-a-p ;D like things getting sucked into a jet engine? I know from experience, those old Johnson/Evinrude's were gas hogs. I had an '86 Evinrude 225 Hp on a 22' Grady-White and I'd have to take out a loan every time I went fishing. And, gas prices weren't nearly what they are now.
My Wellcraft with the 150 Yamaha is extremely efficient compared to everything else I've owned. I've estimated it at WOT to burn 16-18 gals/hour. At cruise speed or less, I can fish all day long on 15-20 gallons depending on how far I go. Sometimes alot less. |
Re: Top Speed??
I get about 3 mph with my V20 with a 175 Yamaha
|
Re: Top Speed??
A GPS clocked 45mph with me and my buddy running light.
Johnson 200hp VRO is running good! Kevin |
Re: Top Speed??
HA hA!! I get 40 running light!! and about 3 mpg if all I got was 3mph I would give up and swim.
45 sounds nice to me. Sounds like you got it tuned just right! Good luck |
Re: Top Speed??
Bigirishk, I just noticed you added a new pic of your up and running v20 to your gallery. Looks great :). I love the way these boats look without bottom paint. Kind of wish mine hadn't been bottompainted. I was gonna take it off, but I have been hearing that a dark painted bottom raises fish better than a white hull. A lot of it has already flaked off where it sat in the sun this summer, so now it looks like I have a school of baby bunker painted on my bottom. We'll see ::)
|
Re: Top Speed??
I also want a white bottom!! My paint has been falling off for years now and it is going to need help for it to all fall off. I want to do it but I don't want the messy Job!! I wish i had the $$ to have someone to do it for me.
still trying for 250!! |
Re: Top Speed??
I wanted to strip all the anti fouling paint off mine as well. I worked on it for a while, scraping off and on for a couple weeks. I finally said enough is enough. Got it cleaned up pretty good and repainted. Looks nice now. I wasn't trying to completely restore to new gelcoat appearance anyways. Just wanted to smooth it out and clean up the appearance.

Re: Top Speed??
Are we ever gonna see any pics of the CB CC?
|
Re: Top Speed??
As soon as you guys send in your donations for a new digital camera! ;D Rumor has it, the first one to get to 250 postings gets a new camera and I have to beat out my buddy MJ. ;D ::)
Just kidding. My camera went toast on me earlier in the season. I'll have to get a new one but I spent so much on boat and fishing stuff this year. :P And, I need a job. I'll borrow my brother's camera this weekend. |
Re: Top Speed??
You only have 4 more to go!! Stop posting !! I Demand it!! ;D
Only kidding, if a camera is in the works go for it. Thanks boss (BS) for the camrea!! HA HA |
Re: Top Speed??
HEYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!! How'd you get the camera?
|
Re: Top Speed??
MJ, you realize we're out of control here and need to get a life don't you? ::)
|
Re: Top Speed??
thats why I am going fishing with you!! ;D

Re: Top Speed??
Hi all. This is my first post on the site. I finally have my 89 v-20 cuddy running well and looking good. Will post pics if I can figure out how to use my camera.. I have a 89 johnson 200 looper, and I get about 40mph at 5200. Am currently playing with a new Pro-Pulse adjustable prop to see if I can improve on that. This is a great site.

Re: Top Speed??
Welcome to the friendly site poolman.

But beware of chumbucket!! |
Re: Top Speed??
Whaaaatt?????? ;D

Re: Top Speed??
Just bought a Navman 4200 depth finder on the net for 164.00, the depthfinder also has the fuel computer. The fuel meter sensor kit was 75.00. Didnt think that was too bad for the whole ball of wax. Now if the weather would just warm up here in SW Florida I could try this outfit out. I feel bad for you guys in the snow and ice.
