Prop for V20 cuddy with 225 OMC ob?
Replacing a 150 with a 1998 225 johnson 2 stroke carb motor. How much pitch do I need with a 3 blade alum? How fast will it go?

Re: Prop for V20 cuddy with 225 OMC ob?

Re: Prop for V20 cuddy with 225 OMC ob?
Skools, most of us with 150's will twist a 17p to max rpm's. I'd say 19p if not 21' for the 225 boys.

I also run a 17" with a 150 hp @ 5500 rpm

Re: Prop for V20 cuddy with 225 OMC ob?
My 225's all have 17's on them except 1 it has a Merc 19 Offshore stainless prop. The 225 off Boater93's boat has a 15 x 17 Mich. Stainless Prop.
HEY BOATER93 WHERE ARE YOU lol. What was your WOT RPM's with the old 225? |
Re: Prop for V20 cuddy with 225 OMC ob?
My current prop was off my 225 Merc, however that was on a 24' boat (1997 Sea Ray Laguna). *It works perfectly on my 150. *My 150 came with a 17'' on the V20 when I bought it. *Both props are the same diameter. *

Re: Prop for V20 cuddy with 225 OMC ob?
THis is intresting. Looks to me like once you get to 150 hp that the advantage of more power falls of very quickly on these hulls. If the gear ratio's are the same and you can't turn more prop, why bother?

Re: Prop for V20 cuddy with 225 OMC ob?
I would think a 21" pitch for a 225, maybe a 19" ???

Re: Prop for V20 cuddy with 225 OMC ob?
Second post here, but ive owned a few boats and these wellcrafts are a bit different, Id suggest a 20 pitch baypro 2 stilletto. For what ever reason they respond very well to that type of prop( lots of stern lift)

Re: Prop for V20 cuddy with 225 OMC ob?
i checked my old 225 off my boat it was a 14.5 x 19 cupped stainless Merc prop. and Boaters had a 15 x 17 Mich. stainless cupped. I would like to try a 21 myself. I'm going to find one on ebay and test a 21 when the boat is afloat.

Re: Prop for V20 cuddy with 225 OMC ob?
I have a '77 cuddy w/ a '95 225 Merc. EFI, & I have a couple of props. I have a 17" x15 1/2" stock Merc Alum. Prop, which I can turn at 5700 to 5800, & get about 46 to 47 mph, I have two Mirage SS Props Which I got on E-Bay which are 19" x 15 1/4", One I run as is, & it turns About 5300 to 5350, at 50 to 51 mph. The other I had redone, they took 2" of pitch out of it, & added a lot of cup, that one runs about 5500 to 5600, at 47.5 to 48.5 mph. Of course a lot depends on the day, wind and current, & especially load. All speeds GPS. The 19" unworked prop gets best cruse milage, good for off shore fishing, no hole shot needed. The reworked Mirage best all around performance. SS definately better than Alum. look around on E-Bay for a deal. I hope these numbers help you some. Good Luck, Joe

If the gear ratio of the 225 and 150's are the same and the 150 guys are running a 17, then I would run a 19. If you have a lower gear ratio than the 150's, I would stick with a 17. |
Re: Prop for V20 cuddy with 225 OMC ob?
omc all V6's have same ratio
and all V4's have same ratio |
Re: Prop for V20 cuddy with 225 OMC ob?
Thanks for the input. I traded the 15x17 for a 19" pitch even up to start. I will post the results when I get it in the water.

Re: Prop for V20 cuddy with 225 OMC ob?
OK...it's been about 10 1/2 hours since you said you'd post results of new prop...so what's the hold-up??.... ;D ;D ...

Re: Prop for V20 cuddy with 225 OMC ob?
is ss realy that much better than aluminium? why? i know it will flex less but, that is why i want to remove my ss and put on aluminium. so when, not if, i hit something i tear up the prop, not the unit. i have seen a few outboards on ebay that needed new cranks due to this very thing. do y'all think if they were spinning aluminium props it would have saved the crank?

Re: Prop for V20 cuddy with 225 OMC ob?
racer, for me it would depend on what kind of water you mostly run in...stumpy, shallow water, I'd have an alum prop, too, for the reason you mention...but most of the water I run in is deeper and I like the performance of SS prop...when I go shallow, it's usually w/ the elec trollin' motor... :D ...

RIGTH ON, RP !!! THE WORSE ENEMY OF A SHIP IS THE SHORE !!! I PERSONALLY FEEL BETTER WHEN I HAVE 1000 FT UNDERNEATH. I'LL GO WITH SS PROP FOR THIS USE.

Re: Prop for V20 cuddy with 225 OMC ob?
SS will out perform alum. that's why you go SS, the prop is behind the bullet of the lower unit, & the skeg. If you hit something hard these will hit first, doing the damage to the lower unit, not the prop. Besides that is why you also have a rubber coupler so the prop will spin, & not break anything else. Of course if you try hard enough you can over come anything. I boat on The Great South Bay, I clam a lot as well as fish off shore. I've run A SS almost exclusively for 12 seasons, same, original lower unit, & there were times it looked as if I were rototilling. Good luck, Joe
