What size prop?
I am still working on the ignition of Mercury 150 hp BlackMax. So I havnt tested this prop yet. I noticed that there is a 15 1/4 x 15p prop on it. I was wondering what you guys run? My 17' Chris Craft ran a 17p prop with 120hp I/O. It just seems like the 150 Merc should have a 17 or 19 pitch prop? Any thoughts?

Re: What size prop?
most guys here w/ a 150, myself included, turn a 17", which collectively should give you best all around performance

Re: What size prop?
I just found Mercurys prop selector. They said 16-18. So 17 seems to be right.
Thnx |
Re: What size prop?
I carry a lot of weight, persons and fish, I commercial most of the time. I went from a I/O to a 175 Yamaha, to a now 175 Evinrude
I have had 19, 17, and 15 pitch and for me the best prop is a 15 1/4 X 15 Lots of torque and up on plane fast!! a little slower on top, but who can run at top speed all the time? |
Re: What size prop?
When I first got my boat it came w/ a 15 1/4 x 15 and it works well. I wanted a spare so I went w/the 17" and found it, for me, to give a little more top end and was still very good outta da hole. I don't carry alot of gear or passengers[not often]. Mainly, my cruise speed stayed about the same, but I knocked off about 200 rpms and the motor is not laboring at all.[ Johnson 150 Ocean Runner]

No one goes full out all the time, and when these boats get it the slop they are best slow and steady! |
Re: What size prop?
my "81 has a 21 pitch on a 200, i don't know how it will run since i haven't had it in the water yet, but that prop looks like it has been on there for a while. The 15 sounds a little steep, i'd try a 17. Just prop it out so the engine will turn the high end of the manufactures recomended rpm range with a light load, trimmed out. Hook a shop tach up to check your tach before you start changing wheels, its suprising how many tachs are off.

Re: What size prop?
I have a 15 1/4 X 19 low grade stainless. Did fine, up to 42 mph top end.
I might get a 15 or 16 to go on the lake and drag the kid on the wake board. |
Re: What size prop?
i ran a 15 X 17 stainless cupped with the 225 Johnson.
I run most of my boats WOT 90% the time till the spot i want to fish. but i like speed ;D I'd like to have a go fast boat too so i could get the N4S out of my system. I'd like a boat that would run around 120 to 130 MPH |
Re: What size prop?
funny i asked the same question before and was told to turn a 15 17 inch prop and it is a excellant size for the150 merc
try it you will like it i used to turn a 13 1/4 x 19 s.s. and would suck air alot and the top speed was about 28 mph now i get top speed about 32 mphand no cavition |
