 150 hp under powered is a 150 hp motor underpowered 4 a v20 |
Re: 150 hp under powered Pescador...150 is a perfect motor for a V-20 ...It'll top out around 40 mph and cruise at 30...2-stroke will be good outta the hole; 4-stroke a little slower...what ya have in mind?... |
Re: 150 hp under powered In my opinion a 150 is plenty for a v20 but I run in the ocean..If you are pulling skiers etc with a heavy load then it might not be. It all depends on what you use it for and how fast you need to go..Frank |
 Re: 150 hp under powered Good call, Frank...pullin' skiers stay w/ 2-stroke for better hole-shot ;) ... |
Re: 150 hp under powered Eveyone keeps saying a 4 stroke wont get outta the hole but mine will throw you in the pond when I punch it if you are not holding on. Could be my light boat. |
Re: 150 hp under powered The new 4 strokes have plenty out of the hole pull |

...maybe yours does, but mine is sluggish pullin' a slalom skier out of a deep-water start...on the other hand, mine is propped for upper-end cruising and usually the boat is loaded w/ teenagers, coolers and stuff when tryin' to get that skier up :D ... |
Re: 150 hp under powered I would say 150 would be plenty. Mine with the 1.6L sea-drive(115HP at the flywheel, around 100HP at the prop) performed alright. Not a speed demon, but will cruise in the mid-20's easily. |
Re: 150 hp under powered 150 is fine, but unless you like to go slow it is the min I would put! |

Ya know randleman, that ain't a bad idea...I've considered it...ski day spare; it'd have to be alum...can't afford to have another SS layin' around :-/ ... |
Re: 150 hp under powered REEL, if ya knew what that honda ss prop really cost, you'd have a couple of em. When I helped some friends rig out their 26 Glacier Bay a while back, I was proppin in cause they and the dealer were jammed up. Anyhow, when the new props came in, I went to pick em up and the invoice was still in the box. Lets just say theys got a big big markup on stainless... Airslot |

Re: 150 hp under powered Pescador, or should I say Fisherman! ;) I just got a V20 so I'm not experienced with these boats as are the fellas here. One thing I know is I don't need to go faster than 42 MPH and that's what I get on mine V20 cc w/ a 150 Ocean Runner. To play on the lake and drag the kids on wake boads I have a less agressive prop to give me more torque and better holeshot. |

Re: 150 hp under powered 150's great, 175 is greater, and 200 starts to get overpowering. Newer 200's also make the boat stern heavy. Jackman was last seen this morning screaming across the lake in a blur with the letters E T E C 200 faintly visible on the back of the boat. HE ain't outa gas yet cause he ain't posted. Most of us are very pleased w/ a 150, I am. I've run a 200 Merc on a 92 CC, and I'm fine with my 150. Airslot |

Now all ya gotta do is tell me HOW to get 'em at that invoice price and I'll have a couple around ;) ;D ... |

Re: 150 hp under powered I have a 1994 150 Johnson and it is plenty of power. At top end I hit around 40 and on about a 1' chop I hit around 45mph and it will yank a 220 skier right out of the water. |
Re: 150 hp under powered Nope, no problems with 150hp. Can't go wrong. |
Re: 150 hp under powered But where is Randleman and his Pics. >:( |

Re: 150 hp under powered You got to be kidding?? :o |

Re: 150 hp under powered let me tell you what i have i have a 150 black max 1988 mercury o,b, and was not happy with the performance then i asked the question that your asking and was told to put on a 15x17 prop i was turning a 13 1/4 x 19 now im very happy so its all in the prop size sorry about that when i go out there are 3 adults 235 ld 180 160 thats like 600 lbs or people plus my takle and gas i have a 55 gallon tank so i figure i must have 1000 lbs on board and i go top speed about 34 mph on my gps with bad bottom paint chips and old so im happy and when you hit the throttles it will throw you back i like that so a 150 yep its good more is better in my book but a 150 is a good choice |
Re: 150 hp under powered Step...glad that new prop worked out for ya!! ;) 8) ... |
Re: 150 hp under powered You can have a 300 hp on there if your not propped right its all worthless!! |
Re: 150 hp under powered yep it worked out reel nice thanks its like i new motor |
Re: 150 hp under powered I am also using a 15x17 ss prop on a 155 commercial evinrude. I get about 38 mph wide open. Is the 15x17 prop used by most of you on a step v 20 ? I was going to try some different prop sizes but I think I'll leave it alone if that's the best torque and speed I'll get. Dennis |
Re: 150 hp under powered I use a 15X15 1/4 I have used the 17 but I like the out of hole better then I like the top speed. When there is 3 guys and 200+ pounds fish I need that little extra push! But I stll get up to 38mph with a light load, and curz 30+ with all the weight and thats fine by me ;D |

Re: 150 hp under powered There is not a whole lot of difference in a commercial motor, But one thing you will see on every one, or not see, is the oil injection system, they don't have one!! Which s a good thing! ;) |

Re: 150 hp under powered Hey EP, Check out the video I posted under "General" "Merc Test Drive Video", I think you will see that 150 hp is plenty for a V-20. |

Re: 150 hp under powered Quote:
It wasn't my intention to prove you wrong. You are probably correct. My motor may have been a special order, it was owned by one of the oil refineries on the Delaware river and was used on a emergency response boat. The motor is 16 years old an has less than 400 hours on it. Mixed gas will lose its lubricating properties over long periods of time. I would assume that might be the reason it has VRO. * * * * *Dennis |

Re: 150 hp under powered Quote:
I had just always heard that they had no injection to them, and I have seen 2 so far but they were made in Mexico. When you have been around boats and motors lone enough you will always hear something out of the norm!! Don't worry my skin is much thicker then that!! ;) |
