Jack Plate
any one had any performace gain from adding one to a V-20? I've got to pull the motor to install the hydraulic steering cylinder on my boat, figured while I had if off, it would be a good time to add one.

Performance gained would have to do with your cavitation plate needing to be raised or lowered. Do you have that problem?

With a jack plate you can run your motor higher, theoretically gaining performance. *I know the bass boat guys swear by them, on a V-20, I don't know.
I was thinking about putting one on mine to move the motor back 6-8 inches so that I could use the splashwell area to put in a nice sized livewell. But that brings up steering cable questions, could you route the cable out from where it comes out of the hull now or would you have to bring it out the transom. Spare won't have that concern with Hyd. steering. My thoughts...............who else? |

With a jack plate you can run your motor higher, theoretically gaining performance. *I know the bass boat guys swear by them, on a V-20, I don't know.
I was thinking about putting one on mine to move the motor back 6-8 inches so that I could use the splashwell area to put in a nice sized livewell. But that brings up steering cable questions, could you route the cable out from where it comes out of the hull now or would you have to bring it out the transom. I've put jack plates on a couple other boats Ive rebuilt in the quest of less draft and better performance. They seem to clean up the splashwell and provide extra room around the motor. SInce my V probably won't be a shallow water boat( not intentionally anyway), I was questioning wheather anyone has increased performance with them.

To my knowledge on this board, no...are you talkin' about a hydraulic JP that can be adjusted on the run?...I can see it helpin' on boat where thrust-to-drag ratio is so great that the hull is runnin' only on the pad...but question JP's efficiency on our "Vs" ;) :D ... sure wouldn't hurt to try ... ya got base-line numbers w/out JP to compare once JP is in place?...

Someone in another thread recently mentioned that the "Shipshape" site had a test where they base lined a boat then put a JP on and retested.
Lets see if I can find it. |

Why are you pulling the motor to put on a hydraulic steering cylinder? I installed a system on my 86 v20 and never loosened a bolt. You can cut the existing steering cable with a hack saw if that's your problem.. I made three cuts and it was out.

my boat has a 20" transom, the transom is cut down in the middle and the new rod that goes thru the tilt tube is too long to fit with out at least loosening the engine, figured while I was at it, i would install transom stiffeners on both the upper and lower bolts, then "while I was at it, might as well put a jack plate on it". Those "while I was at its" , get me in trouble sometimes. I don't have a plate in my shed of "spareparts" or it would allready be on the boat, just wondering if it would be worth the effort to run one down.

I fish on a 24' Pro Line flat back boat (1976). This boat runs real skinny for a 24' and with the jack plate, we've been in some really shallow stuff. I just repowered my 86 V20 and I kick myself for not installing one. If you fish in shallow water, the next thing you'll want is a power pole.

Question for anyone running with a jackplate. I had a 4" setback installed with a 5"vertical lift, but the mechanic stated that the 25" is sitting too low and water is shooting straight up and hitting the steering bracket at the front of the motor. Does anyone using one of these have water spray in the front of the motor?

The plate is a T&H Marine Fixed Plate (4" Setback, 3" lift, plus 2.5"lift with alternate mounting holes). They mounted it in the highest holes. I am a little bummed that I had to order a CMC model 40012 which has up to a 6.5" lift and is manually adjustable. It cost me $140 plus $120 expedited shipping (yikes), to get it there by Wednesday when they are available to work on it. Unfortunately the work is being done at the boat yard on Cape Cod 75 miles from where I live, so it is sight unseen. I will be traveling there Friday and will dope slap the guy if he had mounted it wrong and cost me more cake. I hope this new one will do it.

I believe it is Skools that added a jack plate, then drilled a hole in the transom and brought the cable out side to the motor so it didn't hit the inside well.

Yeah MJ, I saw that pic. Almost looks like water might possibly hit the bracket and shoot up. As I said, I won't be able to see it/take pics until Friday, but by then they will have installed the new plate.
