Fish Finder Opinions

I am in the market for a good fishfinder.

I would like a color unit but I no likey the prices of new color units. I had a Koden CVS 102 on my old GW and really liked it. I could tell what kind of fish we were going to catch before dropping down the bait.

I doubt I will ever find myself in water much deeper that 40 fathoms.

What are your thoughts on how many watts, single or dual frequency, what frequency, etc.......

Raymarine or Furuno

If you're serious about fishing, get a fish finder that does more than bottom reading and give you false readouts. I'm in the process of installing my brand new Furuno 620, I must admit, It took me awhile to bite the bullet, but I'm glad I did it.

Before installing the X-ducer I tested my F-finder in my 40 gl portable live well, I have about two dozen of extra large and medium shiners plus a large yellow perch (I kept the perch for this purpose and already released it back)

Here's a shot at the bait, you can clearly see the perch ( red) vs the bait:

Another shot with bait only, the darker colors are the extra large baits:

I can't wait to go out and try this bad girl :)

Re: Fish Finder Opinions

Now that is pretty cool stuff.

I am well acquainted with the need to have a good fishfinder. I used to tell people what they were going to catch before they dropped the bait with my old CVS 102.

HOLY CARP!!!!! I just looked up the price of a Furuno 620. :o

That is a little over my budget.

I use a Garmin 250 fishfinder. Mine's B/W but they're available in color.

Re: Fish Finder Opinions

I just installed a new Lowrance 337 (external antenna) color sonar/GPS combo...if sonar is all you want, there's a unit in this size that's VERY reasonable...the 337 series has been replaced w/ another just to keep up w/ marketing...so you oughtta be able to find one pretty cheap ;) ...

Re: Fish Finder Opinions

Regardless of which brand you decide to buy, get the most vertical pixels 400 or more, most power, largest screen and in my openion a single frequency, wide angle for 40 fathoms or less. One disadvantage of having a combination unit gps/ff is if one needs repair you are out of both. One disadvantagve of having two seperate units is they take up a good bit of console space. Happy shopping to you.

I used to buy high dollar fish finders but salt water will zap even the best of them so now I buy all my electronics off ebay. I know a guy who is a big weenie at raytheon and he gave me one of the state of the art super duper super man fish finders with all the goodies including temp , speed, penis enhancer etc and in less than a year I managed to fry it..On the other hand I have a basic $59 dollar lowrance on my old 17 Mako that has worked without a problem for 5 years and it sits out in the weather full time.... .Frank

Re: Fish Finder Opinions

I just bought a Sitex CVS 106 (the old tube style, not lcd) on ebay with a thru hull transducer for $138 including shipping. Those units were $600 - $700 plus new. Of course this one could be junk, but we will see.
