Suzuki 140
I have a 1979 V20 CC fisherman that I am putting a 140 Suzuki on.
Is anyone else on the board running the same engine? |
Re: Suzuki 140
Welcome to the board...yeah we've had a couple of guys hang on a Suzy 140 ...w/ good result...performance won't be ''BLISTERING" (neither is my 150), but it'll do a good job and should be very econimical...propping will be very important ;) (but what boat isn't?)...
Post some pics as ya go along...we likes 'em!! ;D ... |
Re: Suzuki 140
Thank You.
This boat is not very photogenic; many folks around here would have dumped it, rather than repower it. But the boat is dry and rides well in the local conditions. I am a retired commercial fisherman, so my boats do not have to look perfect, just perform perfectly. This is one of those ugly duckling boats that fills the bill. This Board has been a big help so far, I congratulate you all for it. |
Re: Suzuki 140
Well Snoozer, jump in and be a part of it ;) ...that's what makes it work is everybody's collective experience...and sounds like you got plenty...got an old friend was a Long-Line Capt several years back...PLENTY of stories ;D ...
...as for the condition of your V-20, don't sweat it...post 'em anyway...bet yours not any dirtier than mine ;) ;D ... |
Re: Suzuki 140
ran into an older gent about 2 months back launching a v20, I think it was a 1979 and he was the original owner. He just re powered w/a suzi 140 so I had a couple of questions for him. I first asked him how he liked his boat and his response was," I go everywhere in this boat". Then I was looking for some comments about the motor....." It's good", was about all I could get out of him.....He was sorta a crusty old man so it was tough to engage him in conversation. I waited around [mostly in an awkward silence] because I wanted to hear him start 'er up.....which he finally did......it sounded smooth as silk and as quiet as a mouse. As he pulled away from the dock I wished him good luck and he just kinda nodded back to me.....I did not even bother telling him about WellcraftV20.com :-/

Re: Suzuki 140
Well, I'll have to wait to hear my new one, Ernesto has added a few days to the time line. Its on, but not wired in yet. Today was a washout with rain all afternoon.
I have not heard a disparaging word, yet. It should have the same performance as the V6 Johnson (155hp) that came off. And its a hundred pounds lighter. With people, coolers and gear the V20 is not a lightweight. Twenty knots is plenty fast so I think I am doing the right thing. The quiet will be nice too. Lobster season is just getting rolling here, so it is a bad time to be boatless. I was lucky enough to find my local guy had a couple leftovers for sale cheap, and I bought one. |
Re: Suzuki 140
One of the biggest differences you'll notice is what you DON'T feel...VIBRATION...when I repowered from old 2stroke to new 4stroke, it was like I'd gotten a new hull, too!!... ;) ...
...let's see some PICS ;D ... |
Re: Suzuki 140
Snoozer:
I would be interested in some peformance numbers when you get it up an running. Kamikaze |
Re: Suzuki 140
Snoozer...here are some pix of Fugazi's repower w/ a 140 Johnny/ Zuke...looks like a good match-up to me... ;D ...
http://www.wellcraftv20.com/gallery/...m17&page=1 I bet he posted some indication on performance when he 1st did it... |
Re: Suzuki 140
I looked up his posts and he sounded happy with it. Here's a couple pics of the install.

Re: Suzuki 140
And now that I have learned how to post a photo, here is me on my sailing home.

A V-20er w/ a blow-bote!!??...well there's a new trick pony jumps outta the barn everytime I open the doors :o ...is the V-20 a tender?...
...sounds like to me you're livin' the life ;D 8) ;D 8) ... |
Re: Suzuki 140
I have an '89 Cuddy with the Suzuki DF140. The motor runs great. It's plenty fast for me and it sips gas. I think it's as good a match as you'll find.
Just be careful if you got the 3 year extended warranty. It seems that they set it up so that it's very difficult to comply with all of their requirements to keep the warranty valid. It may have just been the company Suzuki was using (GE). I bought my Suzuki with about 100 hours and it has performed flawlessly. I just recently bought a brand new 90 hp Yamaha for my wife's bought (17' Whaler Montauk) which also runs great. I'd say the Suzuki is just a little bit quieter and smoother at idle though. Good Luck with it. RIBoater |
Re: Suzuki 140
Well Reel, your right I am a lucky guy.
I live on the sail boat here in Marathon, when I am not sailing. The dinghy just does not cut the local conditions, and if you ever caught a kingfish in an inflatable boat you know what I mean. It becomes a deflatable quickly. The V20 is not 'the' tender, but one of them. A kid in Key West had this boat for sale for a while, but every time I tried to look at it the price went up. Finally he ran it aground and packed the motor with white clay mud and cooked it. He called me the next day and told me he needed money and he really needed to sell the boat. He put a new waterpump in the old Johnson and I was dumb enough to buy it. To its credit the Johnson ran for a while, then one day started puking what looked like vanilla milkshake. Rest is soon to be history. RIB, no extended warrenty on this motor as it is a leftover 2005, with a discount. I did my home work, and I am happy you all confrimed that what I thought is OK. Quiet and vibrationless efficiency beats speed any day. Thanks. |
Re: Suzuki 140
Ya done good, Snoozer... ;) ...
|
Re: Suzuki 140
Snoozer, nice boat, beautiful motor, sweet blow-boat. ;D Welcome to V-20 land ;)
|
Re: Suzuki 140
Thank you all for the welcome.
Update. With two hours into the breakin period, stats are: 2000rpm=6.8kt 3000rpm=10 to 11kts 4000rpm=18.8 kts Conditions were flat to three feet. In the 1 to 3s speed fell off at 4000rpm to 17.5. There was about 25-30 gallons of premix left in the tank, dealer said it would not hurt it, and it runs find. Tomorrow will be a long day. |
Re: Suzuki 140
Snoozer...is she makin' the Mfgr's Max RPMs at WOT?...

Probably hasn't opened her up yet w/only 2 hrs....must be nice to have that problem ;) |
Re: Suzuki 140
Good catch, Tin...break 'er in right and keep in mind there's a chip recordin' everything that motor does ;) ...
|
Re: Suzuki 140
Yep, not there yet.
Six hours on the meter, got it up to 5000rpm yesterday, you boys must be patient. Lot of thunder storms daily this year. With local gusty winds, I cut the ride short yesterday. Should have more time on the meter today. I'm still feeling out trim and such, and.......I thought you just wanted pictures. |
Re: Suzuki 140
snoozer . . . Congrats on the new motor. Looks like your specs are on par (or a little better) than this boat.

Re: Suzuki 140
Motor is turning out to be OK.
Smooth and plenty of power. Still need to get a handle on trim, but its all good. 4200rpm gives me little over 20 kts. |
Re: Suzuki 140

Hey Snoozer... Quickie on trim: Outta the hole w/ trim all the way down; best bite Once gettin' on plane, hold up button for a slow 3-count(1001, 1002, 1003), maybe 4 depending on how fast your trim moves Steering will be heavy on plane w/ trim down; will lighten up w/ trim up; RPMs will increase 2-4 notches Goin' straight and long turns, leave trim up; best performance and fuel econ. Tight turns, trim down, best bite, prevents "blow-out" Rough seas, you want the bow down, so trim down...if ya wanna get real fancy, trim tabs will help here, too among other things...wish I had 'em... Anyway, hope this helps... ;) ;D... |
Re: Suzuki 140
Snoozer: I have a 84 cc and am thinking about repowering from a 90 merc. Looking at thr 135 to 150 range. It's great to hear about your 140 Suzy since I looked at it on the net and was wondering what it would do for mine.
Pictures look good also. Welcome to the board. I am a newbie here also but these guys made me feel right at home. Lots of good infomation in the older posts also if you have time to go back and read them. Keep the pictures and updates coming. |
Re: Suzuki 140
Update
About thrity five hours on the new motor and all is well. At 4200rpm I am getting 20Kts in flat water. Best thing is; last day of lobster hunting (a mix of speeds) I did eighty miles on twenty gal. with very little noise. |
Re: Suzuki 140
Most excellent mileage bro, keep us posted!! 8)
|
Re: Suzuki 140
Snoozer...sounds great!!...easy to figure she'd be a real fuel-sipper ;) ...glad it's workin' out well for ya!!...
...any Lobsters left or didja get 'em all? ;) ;D ... |
Re: Suzuki 140
Reel, there seems to be plenty. You have to measure fifty to find a keeper in some places. There is a lot of predation also this year, or it may be that we have not had a 'cane to wash away the detritus. It looks like Nurse sharks like lobster as much as we do. And they tend to go after the bigger ones. I don't know how the commercial catch is this year so far, but the price is up.
We seldom get our limit, it is an excuse to go. And if this motor continues to be this good on gas, I'll be going farther into the back country, on more like exploring missions. Edited for spelling. |
Re: Suzuki 140
i cant find my dictionary... could someone please look up predation and detritis for me? tx
|
Re: Suzuki 140
Sorry
Predation, in this instance is refering to the Lobsters being prayed upon by other critters. Detritus, (my spelling has never been great) is refering to the pieces of eaten lobsters (shells) littering the bottom in places where lobsters used to be. |

Re: Suzuki 140
Snoozer: is there any further updates as to your break in progress. I am waiting to see how well it does at WOT. :D
|
Re: Suzuki 140
Well, let me tell you, I'm as happy as a two dicked dog.
I have not had it WOT yet and may never feel the need to go that fast. In flat water it will fun 28Knt at five thousand rpm. My normal cruising RPM is 4200-4400, at something like 20Kts. (by GPS) There is usually a full tank and a load of something (mostly ****) and two or four people. The mix of running and trolling, (idleing looking for lobsters) adverages five MPG or a little more. The spects on the motor say it will burn 4+ GPH at 4500 RPM and I think it is spot on. Thats five gal per twenty miles at twenty knots, and I am happy with that after the two strokes in my life. I have been holding off fixing up the boat somewhat, to see if the combo would be OK. I think its fine, and am getting the cushions redone and sprucing up the boat some. I also bit the bullit for a better sounder to pick fish out of the rocks. Suzuki's warenty is a mystery. Oil changes have to be Suzuki stuff, and it is pricey. They also require valve checking/adjusting at two hundred hours, an eight hour job for the Suzuki tech. At $110 per hour, its not an inexpensive motor to maintain. I have over 120 hours on it now, so I'll be there soon. If any problems come up I will post it on the site. For now I am pleased. Let me add a couple things. The neighbors here call it the 'stealth boat' now because it so quiet. And if I had it to do over, I'd get a 25 inch motor and build up the transom. Way too much water comes over into the well on this boat. And if two people are in the stern, the aft hatch better not leak. I took twenty pots out last week (all loaded forward of the console) in three footers. Took it slow and had not problems untill I turned around, then got pooped. |
Re: Suzuki 140
Good stuff to hear. On a good note, everybody that I know has taken the motor in to be checked but I don;t think anybody has ever had the valves adjusted. THey just check it and it's always been in spec. I love them Suzy's.

Re: Suzuki 140
sounds great! so, if you dont mind me askin, what does one of those fancy four bangers go for? tx
|
Re: Suzuki 140
Suzuki 140hp outboard=$8000
|
Re: Suzuki 140
Thats what I paid, plus install and the tax, $11,160.00
|
Re: Suzuki 140
Does Suzy make you go to a dealer to install??
Yamaha does or it voids the warr!! Last I knew Johnson doesn't care, at least 2 years ago I installed my buddys. |
Re: Suzuki 140
They do here. The guy still has two leftover 140's at $8,000, but will not sell them unless he does the install. He did a nice job on mine, but very pricey I think.
