THOSE WINGS.
y'know the things that bolt to the cavitation plate.
the ones that claim faster plane, better fuel economy, chicks'l show you their tits and your rich aunt'l croak and leave you 3.5 mil. who has em? who had em? who likes em? who dont? any difference? what'r ya gay? |

I run the 1 piece hydro-foil on my 19' bowrider. Helps with planing(my boat is EXTREMELY stern heavy), but takes from top end speed. I run them on my 14' JON boat as well. All my 14' JON's would bounce in the bow on plane unless you trimmed them way down, the foil stopped the bouncing. Haven't tryed it on a V yet though.

I added one to my boat when it was a I/O and it worked great!!
Fast to plain an better handling, I have no idea if there was any difference when I switched to Outboard cause I have always run one ever since. |

had one on the orignal motor(150 merc o/b) and it worked great getting the boat on plane. *instead of the boat "squatting" as it took off it would just rise up as it accellerated. *the trim seemed more reactive also. *ialso have a 13 ft whaler w/ 40 tohatsu that is stern heavy and the bow really sticks up till you get going & i am going to add one this season. *it will knock off a few mph i believe. as far economy, i didn't see any great difference.

I added mine when I was running the Renkin and notice an immedeate difference in handling and performance. When I took the V out for the test drive after the engine (115 HP from the Renkin) was installed she got right up on plane and I was able to trim her out easily. I have a buddy that has a V with an IO that seems to always ride low in the stern and will not add one. I am convinced that they are a benefit for a small boat.

I agree with 2c, generally we remove them when we get a motor with one on it.

Atwood builds one that angles up from the cavitation plate so that when the boat is on plane it is dry, I have put them on a few boats with good results, never on a V though.....yet.

I hava StingRay dealio I bought from either Boaters world or West Marine. I used it on the V-20 for awhile but, found the outdrive will trim up and run faster w/o the thing. plus backing down it's a PIA. I finally switched it over to my 16' Bonita/ 90 Yam'.

I had a 16' Slickcraft w/a 85 Rude and always thought it went pretty good. I put on a "dolefin" and found it came out of the hole better and it made the boat ride a little higher out of the water, thus , a little more top end. The dolefin was like the wings of a bird, they mounted perpendicular on the cavitation plate. There is another style that looks like one large fat fin that extends out and over the prop. That style claims better lift at the stern and keeps the prop in a tight "water column" for better prop performance. Seems like it may be a better design if you have trim attitude issues. Anybody have any experience with the second "wing" mentioned?

It was a must have on the old 17' Thunderbird. Eliminates "bouncy bow" syndrome. I have not BBS on the V so no gay wings necessary.

Had them on my 1820 Robalo CC, they do help getting up on plane if you are not happy with what you got. If you are stern heavy they will hamper you in drifting especially if thru rips or swells or heavy boat traffic. They will cause your stern to react slow to the rising and falling water dragging those flat wings thru it. This can cause problems like I said for heavy stern boats getting splashed by wakes and waves in the back as the a@@ is rising slower than the water level and the next wave can come into the boat more.

I've hear of cavitation plates cracking because of them, but I have no first hand knowledge of that. I don't need one, my boat doesn't porpoise and gets up on plane plenty fast.
