Evinrude E-Tec i'm thinking about repowering my 83 V20 with an Evinrude E-Tec. as old as the transom is what is the biggiest engine i should put on it? it currently has a johnson 150 vro on it. does anybody currently own a V20 with an E-Tec? |

Re: Evinrude E-Tec There are a couple on this board, so far they all seam to be pleased. I personally would replace with another 150. How solid is your transom. Welcome to the board, and last but not least, POST PICTURES. ;D |
|
Re: Evinrude E-Tec Jason, a good "test" for your transom is to tilt the motor all the way up and then hang your upper body across the lower-unit, applying weight to the lower-unit ... a sound transom will yield very little "noise", whereas a weak transom will snap, crackle and hopefully not pop ... this is only an initial test, but if noise is nonexistant or minimal, I'd say yer good to go ;) ... So far, we've had guys hang a 150 and two 200s on "V"s ... I personally think the 200 small-block and the V-20 are a match made in Boat-Heaven ... ;) 8) ... Let us know how it goes ... the cumulative knowlege of all it's members is what makes this board as great as it is ;) ... |

Re: Evinrude E-Tec The 1983 catalouge in the history gallery list 200 as max HP. |

Re: Evinrude E-Tec I think the 15o/175/200 all weigh the exact same. I know the 175 and 200 do. I just purchased a new 175 etec in March. I love it. Go for the 175 or 200 - depending on what deal you can get. by the way, they make a 200 HO (high output) etec, but that is a lot heavier - weighs the same as the 225. |

Ding, Ding, Ding, Ding!! ;D ...we've got ANOTHER winner!! ...so ya got it in March and yer just now steppin' up ... I appreciate ''humble'' as much as anybody, but this is NEWS!! ...PICS AND NUMBERS IF YA GOT 'EM ;) ... |

It should also be noted that the engine should NOT be running at this time. 8) |

Re: Evinrude E-Tec The E-Tec small block, 60* motors all weigh the same. I had a Force 150 and it pushed my V20 at 35 mph. Most days on Lake Erie you can not reach this speed therefore for us the E-Tec 150 is more than enough power. It should push her to 40-42 mph. We had the digital guages installed with some of the money saved by going smaller. If you got it spend it and once you do drive it like your renting it. Billy Mac ;D |

Re: Evinrude E-Tec Drive it like it's under warranty, try to get it to break about 6 months before the warranty goes out. |

Re: Evinrude E-Tec Reel I still can't get over your kindness. I have a new E-Tec sitting on the back of my boat and probably won't splash it til Memorial weekend and you travel an hour to test a boat for a fellow V20-1 er. Reel you truly are a top dawg! Billy Mac 150 ;Ds Did AS ever answer you on how he's doing fishing? |

TWO THINGS: 1-Why/how can ya wait to splash the Big "E"?? your brass kahunas must be machined to a finer tolerance than mine ... I'da had to run to the water straight from the dealer ::) ... 2-Slot popped a nice post in the Fishin' Sec...take a look ;) ... 8) ... |

Re: Evinrude E-Tec We were going to drop it in last Monday but the winds had picked up so we thought we'd do it yesterday. Yesterday both Dan and I worked. Today I'm going to Grand Rapids to celebrate my aunt and uncle's 65th anniversary. Maybe Monday or Tuesday, theboat's at Dan's 26 miles away from my house and the lake. Billy Mac ;D |

Re: Evinrude E-Tec Mac, Be careful when you throw the throttle on that e-tec the first time, if you do it like you used to have to with the Force, you will end up throwing someone out of the boat. And you and REEl are both DAWGS. |
|
Re: Evinrude E-Tec Thanks RB for the advice. *Dave at the boat store did warn us of how the E-Tec starts and stops. *He said everyone should be seated. *Thanks and I believe I have the Force sold though Craigslist. *Billy Mac *;D |

 Re: Evinrude E-Tec Quote:
Did Dave have any opinions about the No-Break-In period needed for the E-Tecs??... |

Re: Evinrude E-Tec When they set the motor up and had it running by using the computer he had extra oil injected. *Also the first three hours not ten the computer will double oil it over 2000 Rs. *It then goes back to normal. *When we splash it the first time, he said to take it to the top end 5300 to 5800 so that he knows it has the right prop. *He also said don't be afraid to run it. *BRP stands behind their products. *If you do blow a head, he can't trouble shoot it. *He pulls the head and BRP sends out a brand new one. *I'll have to be like a pilot " Ladies and gentlemen please fasten your seat belts!" *Billy Mac *;D |

Re: Evinrude E-Tec No doubt! ;D Just make sure everything is put away/battened down, and that your top is secure! The first time I had my new engine wide open it scared me -- I thought we were going airborne! |

Re: Evinrude E-Tec Bet the seatrial was fun!!...did you get any numbers?...top speed, cruise, etc...how does it compare to the 200 Ocean Pro?... Curious and sorry if I missed it, but what happened to the 200?...did it poop out on ya or you just decide it was time?... |

Re: Evinrude E-Tec I've been logging tons of hours on the engine so far, and have zero complaints. I don't know how fast she goes, but it feels the same. It definitely gets up on plane quicker despite having 25 hp less. Fuel consumptions is sooo much better too. Though I don't have any numbers - just a lot less trips to the pump. I decided to move my boat up to the Raritan bay/Sandy Hook, New Jersey area this year and wanted to have a 100% reliable engine since I often boat with my family. Previously, I was pretty much in the Barnegat Bay. I was actually in NYC harbor two weeks ago and was glad I had the new engine with all the tankers, cruise liners and commercial traffic. (Plenty of military presence too - guarding the bridges). I traded in my 200 Evinrude, he gave me $3500 for it and I didn't want the hassle of dealing with a sale. |
