43 mph on the river today
Me and my Dad dumped the boat in the river today for a ride. Trimmed up in flat water I hit 43 mph on my hand held GPS. I was real pleased, the boat performed well and I even got a few compliments on the old V20's lines. It was a good day.

Re: 43 mph on the river today
Congrats!! 43 is a good number!
I can get 40 if alone, But I easy get high 30's with people, but most of the time I go around 30 for comfort and to save gas, But on a flat morning and all is dead calm, you just have to open it up ;D |
Re: 43 mph on the river today
43 IS a good number ;) ...sounds like the right prop and a good day, Mulv 8) ...

Re: 43 mph on the river today
I hava V-20 cuddy with the 165 I/O. I haven't even opened it up yet. I know it'll do 30 (local IWC limit ) but, what could I expect on the open sea? Moreover, what's the fastest these hulls will go safely? Jes wondering.

Re: 43 mph on the river today
I had the same 165 I/O when I got mine.
In the ocean you will run mid to high 20's and on a flat day you will do low 30. Mine was a dog, and I wasn't happy with the power. But it was 27 years old and needed work. |
Re: 43 mph on the river today
Mulv glad you had a nice fast run. People do appreciate good lines. My V20 has a Force 150 on her equivalent to a 135 and she'll do 35--37mph. Bill Mc ;D

Re: 43 mph on the river today
Good job Ryan, won't need that hand held for long ;)
Those are good numbers. My 115 hp gets me 33 top end loaded up, top up etc. Probably in the mid 30's no enclosure and just me, thats plenty fast for me I like to cruise place to place around 25 mph which gets me around my fishing haunts plenty fast, dry and comfortable. Plus I can enjoy the view of the Verrazano Bridge, NY skyline and an occassional super model in comfort. What a boat ;D |

When the Force craps out Im gonna put a 150 on the 18. Thatll be sweet!!! :o
|
Re: 43 mph on the river today
My center console will do 45 on the good 'ole Garmin on a flat calm day in the ICW with a t-top and my curtains up with the 200hp Merc trimmed up and about a half load of fuel. I loooooove my '92 Merc!!!!!!!!
|
Re: 43 mph on the river today
I also top of at 43 mph with my 97 150 Ocean Runner.
I'm falling in love with these small 2 strokers ;D ;D |
Re: 43 mph on the river today
I hit 38 on flat calm water, but I didn't mess with the trim much. I prefer to cruise right around 28.
|
Re: 43 mph on the river today
I have a 1994 150 Johnson and I can hit around 40 to 45 mph with a good load. I find the boat runs much faster in a small chop as it stays on top of the water a little better.

Re: 43 mph on the river today
Interesting... my dually 20' with an '86 Black Max 150 tops out at 43 on the GPS too.
It has outrun my buddies' 18' Grady with a 150 Evinrude on it. Barely, but there was no argument. |
Re: 43 mph on the river today
My '85 cuddy with top up, with Merc 170 I/O @ WOT has done 34.4 mph on the Garmin with 2 people in it and 34.3 on another day with 5 people in it. I found that interesting - friend says it's probably prop'd for torque rather than speed. Cruises mid 20's @ around 3400 rpm.
|
Re: 43 mph on the river today
Test run after new brain install, runnin' into good wind at WOT, she just touchin' 6 grand and 41.6 mph was best I could get ... oh and trimmed up til she suckin' ducks ;) ...
|
Re: 43 mph on the river today
When I was I/O 165 thats all I got 34 on a good day, Now with the comversion OB 175, on a good day I am at 40 and curz at 34 ;D

Re: 43 mph on the river today
I got 41.1 mph on the GPS this past weekend with a following wind on a light chop. Didn't bother trying to trim her out, that was plenty fast. I almost never run wide open, she cruises 28 at 3500 rpm all day long. The funny thing is she runs just about perfect without having to trim the outdrive. Probably because she is stern heavy with the 305 chebbie ;D

Re: 43 mph on the river today

Zebra, that's about what mine does with a 5.0L mercruiser, almost exactly (well, not the top end, only 41.1).

Re: 43 mph on the river today
My Tahoe went 130 mph today, several times. ;D
And my V-20 goes 40 mph (gps) with my Johnzuki 140 loaded light, |
Re: 43 mph on the river today
I've got a 200 hp 305 I/O and don't think I could touch that kind of speed. Better check my top rpm and prop relationship!!
|
Re: 43 mph on the river today
Yep wiseguy, I have the same setup and get to 41 mph top speed. You definately have a prop issue. What rpm's are you getting at WOT?

Re: 43 mph on the river today
OK- I'm on a new mission then!
Lake Erie can be a rough ridin piece of water. Next time I get some flat water, I'm going to come up with some numbers and figure out what needs to be done with a little brain help from you guys. Not that I need to go that fast, but nice to know it's in there and running efficiently. I'll report back. What prop are you using Mr. Knot? |
Re: 43 mph on the river today

Mr Knot...took me a minute ::) ... "running efficiently" rather than runnin' top speed is what it's all about w/props ... at least for me anyway ... do ya know the max RPMs recommended by the mfgr? ... I'd be lookin' to have the CAPABILITY of gettin' MOST of that from a given prop and then find a comfortable cruise w/it (should be around 2/3 to 3/4 of max) ... |
Re: 43 mph on the river today

Don't really know the man - I'm sure it's just Frayed to you! ;D ;) ;D |

Re: 43 mph on the river today
OK - Got the Merc book out. Mine is the Merc 898 200hp 305cu (chevy block, I guess) (5.0L?).
It says 650-700 idle and 3800-4200 WOT. Next time I get out, I'll see what I can get out of her on the GPS. I don't remember what I did last last year (or 5 minutes ago!) but I think low 30s. I think at 2500 I'm running 21-22. I have no idea what size prop is on it ???- I'm still trying to find the brakes! |
Re: 43 mph on the river today
"...it all sounds so distinguished ..."
Well, that certainly doesn't belong here :D |
