Is a 1982 V20 cuddy with a Yam 4 stroke 115 ok

I had a 1987 v20 with a 200 that was very fast. I'm looking at a 1982 with a 115. Seems underpowered to me. Anyone have recommendations for me ? Skip it ?
Thanks !!

That's very close.
In the mid "70's a 115 would have been barely passable, a 140 was preferred.
The newer engine might have a little more hp but it weighs more.
My opinion it might do 25-30 mph.
And, WELCOME TO THE SITE.

Thank you, just got mail from the current owner.
he said it cruises @ 25 mph & wot is 35 mph. Dosent seem right to me. My 1987 with a 200 was 40mph wot if i remember correctly.

His numbers may be right, mine at 5000rpm hits 42mph.

My 84 cuddy w/ 140 Johnzuki 4 stroke will hit 40 mph (gps). * ;D

Remember the 4 strokes turn 1000 more rpms.

Take it for a sea trial.

100 miles is close for a good deal. Take some cash and sea trial it. I think the motor is about small as you'd wanna go but, Yamahas are great. Check it out.

Re: Is a 1982 V20 cuddy with a Yam 4 stroke 115 ok

Its borderline and you'd definitely have to have the right prop for whatever you plan to use it for. I would NOT buy it without sea trial unless they gave such a good deal you couldn't turn it down. ;)

Twin 115's on a bracket would be the ticket 8) ;D

I have a V20 with a 112 Johnson Special and with 2 people and full of fuel I get about 26 MPH WOT.

Re: Is a 1982 V20 cuddy with a Yam 4 stroke 115 ok

the yamaha 115 four stroke is a weak motor . . . stay away. 115hp @ WOT going 26mph will consume more fuel than a 200hp two stroke at a 35mph cruise.

With a Johnson 115 I cruise at 4200 rpm at 23-26 mph and top out lately around 33-34 mph......on a bracket.

What do you plan to use the boat for. Everyone myself included always talk about top end or how fast. I don't know anyone that runs a wot all the time. If it's going to be a fishing boat and you fish conditions where you don't have to out run an approaching storm, a 115 would be just fine. Billy Mac ;D

If you get it at a good price that makes it even better.

Skools doesn't run WOT all the time, what are you kidding me? He doesn't have to. Half throttle for him is 40 + ;D

It depends on what you want...if reliability means more than performance, you'll have that 8) ...

Like Whale my 115 does 30 to32 knots WOT depending on the load. The motor is on a bracket which helps. Where I fish most of the time I can't run her wide open anyway because I don't like to get the s#$% beat out of the boat and my butt.

If the boat price is a good deal and the 115 cks. out. buy the boat and sell the 115 yammie 4 stroke its got great resale value. and now you have the controls and guages for yamaha, he probably upgraded those also. go get yourself a used ox66 or a hpdi at least 150hp. i know this sounds like more work but if it was easy everybody would do it...

Its the journey that makes it all worth it...

and 100 miles away is just a good road trip, heck your going to see a boat you may buy, have fun...

BS, define weak motor. I have a 115 four stroke Yamaha on a 23 Carolina Skiff semi v and I top out at 42 mph. That's what I got with my 86 V and a 2000 150 hp Merc. My results were the same performance that yamaha got testing a 115 on a 24' Carolina Skiff. If you mean a 115 and a V20, yea, ok, however I don't believe a 115 Yamaha is a weak motor. On their test boat (CS) @ 4000 rpm, 28 mph @ 7.2 mpg and @ wot 42 mph and 4.4 mpg. I've owned two v20's and loved them both, but I needed more space and I got tired of fighting the listing problem with several people onboard. I've also seen 115's with over 3000 hrs on them with no major repairs. Just my $.02

they probably meant weaker than a loop charged 2 stroke. i have rebuilt and couple of yam 100/115 4stk and they are weak when compared to loop charged 2stk. one of the reocurring porblems i have seen with those engines is that if used in salt water and not flushed. the block corrodes and then water finds its way into the oil sump. make sure you check the oil color before you buy it.

V20 with a 115

My 84 V20 has a 115 2 stroke and goes pretty well - about 33 (on the GPS) If I could swing it, I wouldn't mind a four stroke repower for the noise reduction.

or an etec. quietness plus weight reduction and torque gain.
