Re: possible world record Hammerhead
Thats one VERY big fishie..Some of the guys down here chum for sharks (catch and release)at night out of Bogue inlet and get hammerheads in July and August and they put of a hell of a fight. They get them right at the stern and sometimes bump the boat waiting for SOMETHING to fall in the water..These guys throw in albacore heads, menhadem chum , fish oil and all kinds of fish crap to start them feeding .Frank

Re: possible world record Hammerhead
I've seen alot'o hammerheads. That one is BIG and why I keep a Colt on board. ;) Biggest shark I've seen was a 12' Tiger off Govt Cut in Miami...in about 8' of water while diving for lobster....It's dorsel nearly scrapped my belly as it swam underneath me. Needless to say I froze in place and tried to hide in the brown cloud spewing from my shorts. :-[

Re: possible world record Hammerhead
Yes, the brown cloud is part of man's natural defense system...it works on nearly anything - even cops! Right Willy?! :o

Re: possible world record Hammerhead
Nah I just make them roll down the passenger side window ;)
You mean to tell me a 12 foot hammerhead swam under you in 8 feet of water. If that had been me, the following would have occurred 1. I would have drifted slowly to my boat, got in, dried off and kneel down and say a quiet thank you to you know who. 2. I would have cruised home and poured my self a large glass of Mr. Jack D. , kissed all my kids and pet my dogs. 3. I would have taken the CFO for the ride of her life(again) 4. I would start a nice fire in a pit and thrown everything I own related to diving in it along with any books on diving. |
Re: possible world record Hammerhead
No it was a Tiger...and YES I freaked out.
I was with mask and fins drifting over grassbeds with the tide. I never saw it comin' cuz I was looking down for lobsters. Next thing I knew.... :o |

Only one I have ever seen, but I don't get there much. i have caught and released many Blue sharks also in the same area. |
Re: possible world record Hammerhead
"HammerHead" was a nic nailed on me by an ol'Boss when I worked thru the Carpenters Union cuz I would drive 16ds in with 3 whacks...then one day I swung back so far I my head with the claw end. Ouch :-[

Re: possible world record Hammerhead
There are bigger sharks there too. There is an old Hammerhead in BG Pass that people have nicknamed "Hilter".

Re: possible world record Hammerhead
couple of weeks ago we were in 3-4 feet of water using the trolling motor looking for redfish, i was standing on the bow with the trolling motor tiller between my ankles steering the boat. a 6 to 7 foot bull shark swam across the bow of the boat _ IN 3 FEET OF WATER - I decided I wasn't going wading that day, talked to the guy at the local tackle shop, he sez there are bulls upto 12 feet in the river, in 5 feet of water or less!!!!!

Re: possible world record Hammerhead
Hey Willy...now we know for sure why Franco had you pullin' the boat around...RETIRE the fins, QUICK!!... ;D ;D...
|
Re: possible world record Hammerhead
I never would have let him in the water if I knew that before, unless we were down to the last Killians!!!

Re: possible world record Hammerhead
OH Boy, now I'm going to have nightmares about what could have been :o
Hey Franco I was watching Mark Sosin the other day and he was fishing 50 to 100 yards off the beach in Jupiter for sharks on light tackle and a fly rod too. Pulling in 4-6 footers one after another, they were all over the place. One h@ll of a fight he had on his hands too. The whole time there are little kids running along the beach and swimming and the sharks are right there. Scary :o |

One day, on my way wading back to shore, in about chest high water, I came within about 8 feet of a Reef or Black Tip Shark about 6-7 feet long! He saw me the same time I noticed him and he bolted off! I don't know who was more scared, although I didn't see a brown slick behind him so I guess it was me!!! :o I'd also frequently come across some pretty big Skates buried in the sand while wading. I would touch them with the tip of my 9 ft. fly rod and they would take off in a cloud! What a "Sharpie" will do to catch a fish! |
Re: possible world record Hammerhead
Last night I was having a few frosties with one of my crazy dive captain friends. On tuesday he speared a huge grouper which bled out very quickly and before he could bag it two very large sand tigers came out of nowhere and were fighting over it big time . The water was very clear and as he slowly came up he could see big sharks coming up also so he released his other fish bag and one came from behind his tank and under his arm and grabbed it from behind with one gulp. This guy has been bit before by sharks and eels and it usually has to do with food etc and pretty much his fault. I find it amazing that there are not more shark attacks. If it were me I would of released my patented brown anti shark fluid and they would of never seen me...Frank

Re: possible world record Hammerhead
When I was in the Dominican Rep. with the CFO and the kids a year and a half ago we went out on a sailing catamaran to do some snorkeling. We were about a 1/4 mile if not a little more off shore and I see this thing popping up and down in the water and realize it is a native guy swimming and dragging some home made float behind him. I told the Capt. and he said it was OK. These guys are spear fishing and they do it all the time. I asked about sharks and he says oh yeah, we lose a half dozen or so guys around here every year. :o
He said the hotels pay them for their catch as they walk off the beach. I still think of the sight of that little guy with some homemade float and basket swimming that far off shore catching fish. My Lord what a set of balls they got to have. |
Re: possible world record Hammerhead
Willy, those guys have found a way of life...of bringin' $/ food to their families...we lose track of basic survival when we get to live as well as we do here in this blessed land of ours...I know I take it for granted far too often...
On another note, last year, the week after we left Cape San Blas, a 14 tr old was wade-fishin' for trout and had what he'd already caught on a stringer tied from his belt...ringin' the shark dinner-bell...he was lucky...he only lost PART of his leg... He who thinks they're not there is foolin' himself... ::)... |
Re: possible world record Hammerhead
OH they are there, right at Sandy Hook in NJ is the largest Great White nursery they have found on the east coast so far. A biologist set up a long line right off the shore, over sixty Great White yutes, 4-6 footers caught over night. They made sure his info didn't get into the general media, but it got out to the fisherman.
And Oz I know what you mean on the survival aspect, I don't take anything for granted, been to many places in the world, I know better. I also know how things can change overnight for anyone. |
