What do you guys know about Mako's of these years, saw this on Ebay and thought it was a real good deal, I know Mako's are different now but the hull looks the same with the addition of the modern transom, but I have not really heard anything about them

That's a Tracker Mako, I believe. Not as good as earlier years.

Check this one out, Willy.

;DWilly, if your looking at boats like that, I need to work with your P.D., that boat would never be in my budget with what I make in Redneck, yuppyville Lewes, De.
;D

mako is a reputable company. thats all i know about them. perty boat. dont know about the price though.

Re: Check this out

Thats nice Tin, but it is 24 years old and I dont believe that is the original transom on it. If it isn't who did the work etc etc this puppy is six years old with twin brand new honda four strokes and a much nicer layout and equipment list. Besides being three feet longer. What is the story with the Tracker owned Makos, are they no good? The ones I saw at the AC boat show sure looked like nicely made boats. That boat with a single four stroke, I believe Yamaha not sure was 65 G's

Re: Check this out

I am probably dreaming but compared to the prices I have seen lately that great riding hull with two brand new Hondamatics seems like quite a buy

I'd take that '84 over the '99 if I HAD to choose.

Some insight. I wouldn't buy a Tracker Mako or Seacraft. The last year or so they may have improved though.

Have the hull surveyed and pull the trigger if it passes. Thats a heck of a deal cause you gonna tie up better than 27g's hanging them new honda's.

I wouldn't be comfortable w/2 HEAVY Honda's on a Tracker transom, but that's just me. There's a reason it's priced as it is. ;)

Hey Willy, You seem to be looking at a lot of boats in the 25 ft range, *I got dibs on your V20 when you move up. *I just thought I would claim it before Hammer asks for it for free or threatens to steal it ;D

I think I would too. Sorry Willy. I'm a big fan of the older Mako CC's although I've admittedly never ridden on one. ;D

Re: Check this out

Well, I'm not much in the looks dept, but my wife seems to think there's more to me than looks.................... ;)

Do you mean to tell me you'd buy a boat on looks alone? If that's the case, do like Stinky suggests and go get a Bayliner.

Re: Check this out

older Makos ;)....newer Makos :P,although they still look nice

Re: Check this out

buy a boat on looks alone? hell no!
it would be a factor. would have to look like a real nice hull. that mako looks like a real nice hull. maybe the hull construction aint what it used to be, what with all the wood and crap they used to put in there, but for my purposes the newer 25 would suit me just fine. cant imagine its a total piece of crap.

Re: Check this out

and ill tell ya what... the newer trophys are real nice LOOKING boats. my pops has a 24 cierra so i just dont like em cause of the floating living room in my pops driveway.

Re: Check this out

Wood in a boat's construction is not necessarily a bad thing. When they're built correctly, I'd rather have a boat with a wooden substructure. Composite boat construction can be a very much overrated concept. It's an easy way out for boat mfg'rs to tout what the consumers want to hear these days. They build them cheaper and charge more money. Of course this is not true for all boats. There are quality boats being built of composite materials. But, it's my opinion that a boat with a wooden substructure and built correctly will give you a much better "ride" than some of the cheap crap produced these days. I want something that's going to slice the waves and not bounce and slap on top of them.
But, this is just my opinion. What do I know?

willy 09-29-2006 12:40 AM

Re: Check this out

Cb it's the way they are built as it usually is.
But if given two boats made by quality manufacturers and one is wood sub structure and one is composite I'm going for the later. Especially if you are talking the transom, or on a sail boat or large cruiser type boat that uses balsa core for the tops decks etc.
if it is to be used in water and it is impervious to water and the contruction is just as good the answer is obvious in my mind anyhow

chumbucket 09-29-2006 12:44 AM

Re: Check this out

I agree. And as I stated, it's not true for all boat builders. There are some quality boats being made with some nice composite materials. I'm just saying that the "non wood construction" sales point is very overrated in many cases.

Re: Check this out

CB, I agree totally. Wood is better suited than composite IF it's done correctly. There's a reason almost all of the top tier boats are still using wood...it's stronger. This all composite, "no wood, no rot" is for marketing.

willy 09-29-2006 02:09 AM

Re: Check this out

I think the reason that they are still doing it the way they are is because thats the way they have always done it.

It's hard to change, and a buisness decision for a change could cost them money, plus they are back on the drawing board with something they have not tested.

A lot of the great yacht builders in the sailing world had the same concerns but some have made the change and have been happily rewarded by the public for it. I think you will see it soon in our expensive sprt fishers too.
