Any Bowhunters out there?
Who bowhunts?
What kind are you shooting? 8) |
Re: Any Bowhunters out there?
I've been out of it for a few years. I'm being pressured at work from a few guys to get out there again. Maybe soon. I've got an older Hoyt.
Bow season opens today here in Mass. |
Re: Any Bowhunters out there?
Same here CB, but I vowed I would never hunt with sticks and string again after my last outing....makes me sick to have em sooooo close only to either not get a shot or to miss.
I guess thats part of it :-/ |
Re: Any Bowhunters out there?

Re: Any Bowhunters out there?
Wow....nothing like having a bunh of passionate commrades like yall. ::)
|
Re: Any Bowhunters out there?
Plenty passionate Stinkster, but I can only afford to do one hobby if I'm doing it right. I traded my Hoyt for some fishin gear about 5 years ago. Now I tell my wife that I only have one hobby.

Re: Any Bowhunters out there?
That's kind of my problem as well. I, too am passionate about the things I love to do. My family is passionate about keeping me too poor to enjoy all the things I love to do. ::)
|
Re: Any Bowhunters out there?
The last time I went hunting with a bow,
I used a Bear 40# recurve. Compounds weren't popular then. Now I go to the supermarket and hunt for a really good piece of meat. Sometimes I get a fowl or two (chicken, turkey) and I don't have to worry about being charged by the wild boar (pork). |
Re: Any Bowhunters out there?
'Bout 15 years ago I went and found a good piece of meat....led to the family that like to keep me and CB poor. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D 8)

Re: Any Bowhunters out there?
Well, I still love to hunt with a rifle although I don't kill very often...BUT that's all about to change my friends!
You see, Stink man has got me all worked up with this recipe for deer tenderloin (w/ mouthwatering picture) and I've gotta git it in my belly soon!! So, I'm thinkin of laying somethin down in November and another in December. :D I did however replace my bow huntin with another kind of "huntin" that involves arrows. Here's just a sampling of the results from the last 3 years huntin trips....I quit huntin WITH arrows, so now I hunt FOR arrows ;D I also have made roughly a dozen arrowheads out of some of the raw flint that I find in the field. I would abo****ely LOVE to make my own bow and arrow and take a deer with it! That is my GOAL!! Just gotta figure out how to make the bow and arrow shaft out of natural materials ??? :-/ ;) http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d7...y/S2010026.jpg |
Re: Any Bowhunters out there?
Very cool stuff there for sure. 8)
I have a buddy that use to work with me and he builds longbows, recurves, arrows, quiver, etc..... Here is his site: www.huntlikeaman.com Check it out...good stuff. I have a nice older Pearson recurve I want to take a deer with one day, but Im gonna get alot more proficient with a compound first. :) |
Re: Any Bowhunters out there?
I have an old Bear Whitetail Legend. It has to be atleast 15+ years old.
I won't get rid of it because it shoots very quietly and accurately. The biggest thing is just to get enough time to spend in the woods to shoot something. 2F |
Re: Any Bowhunters out there?
They've got the site filtered out here at work so I can't get to it, but I will check that out at home - thanks!

Re: Any Bowhunters out there?
Hey Stinker, sorry been away for a few just saw this post, you are not alone. Though I hunt all seasons and enjoy some fine rifles and shotguns my first love is the bow. In fact I hunted with a bow in all the firearm seasons here until they made it illegal.
I also ran a traditional archery shop here in NJ for eight years. I carried custom longbows and recurves from the finest makers in the country and never had less than 60 bows in my shop from them, some of them had 3-5 year waiting list for theirs and I had standing orders and deposits to keep them in my shop all the time. If you ask your bow maker friend if he has ever heard of Renaissance Archery/Bill Schultz in NJ I bet he has if he has been in it for awhile. I sponsored Pennsylvanias and New Jersey's first ever all tradtional archery rendezvous(modern times that is) One of the original members of the Society of Traditional Bowmen, Pennsylvania's Traditional Archers and taught hundreds of archers converting to traditional archery how to shoot instinctively, put on demos at shoots of that and put on self bow making classes at my shop by some very well known self bow makers. When my fourth child was born and I was working three homicides consecutively along with my normal case load as a detective I ran out of time, literally and closed up the shop. I still keep in touch with a lot of the people and guys send me cards and letters all the time of their hunts all over the world with bows and custom cedars I sold them and thanking me for teaching them how to shoot. It's pretty cool. Though I had never shot one in my life I bought a Hoyt compound last season because I could not draw the bows due to my neck. First day out trying it stood at forty yards nailing 3 inch yellow dots on the target all the time. Taken four deer with it, does not give me the same feel as my longbows or recurves but I still enjoy the accuracy and ease of shooting, lets me hunt after the surgery. |
Re: Any Bowhunters out there?
Wow Willy, good to know. Good stuff!! 8)
As far as my buddy and Bill Shultz, here is an exert from his site Willy: "In our pursuit to learn from those who have gone before us, we sought out those whom we believed to be the best of bow makers. Two of Wildfork's bowyers, Van Normand and Stephen Childers, have been personally instructed by the last living protégé of Howard Hill-John Schulz. Many believe that Schulz is the best longbow maker of all times. Rest assured that the legacy continues as we focus on handcrafting some of the finest all wood composite bows following this tradition. From a contemporary standpoint, many will recognize the name of Joe Don Jones of Oklahoma and Russ Dickson of Alabama. Absolute masters of bamboo and osage, they were also sought out for personal training. " The same guy? his son maybe? |
Re: Any Bowhunters out there?
John Schultz was a nice fellow Stink, came here to PA and put on demos at the bowhunters festival in Forksville. I talked to him on the phone several times. He was one of the fellows that worked as a bow maker at Howard Hill Archery, which is still in buisness. He made a nice bow, straight reflex and fairly stable but the reflex deflex design that came on in the late eighties took a lot of the hand shock that was inherent in Shults's bows design away and gave all the advantages it had like stability and ability to handle a heavy arrow. He eventually got out of bow making, he developed a allergic reaction to a combination of the hardwood dust and the finishes used on the bows. Owned two of his bows over the years, bamboo lams and black glass. Nice shooters but the fit and finish was not up to some of the other makers I knew and he did not keep up with the improvements in design that came from others. Had a loyal following of shooters though and that is a good thing.
There have literally been hundreds of great bowmakers over the past fifty years, including some production style bows. If you want to talk about this a little more or are considering making a purchase give me a PM. Maybe I can steer you in the right direction. Also there is a good magazine called Traditional Bowhunter that has some good info. I used to advertise with them when they first went national |
Re: Any Bowhunters out there?
Right on Willy, if I ever develop a "need" to go that route I will give you a shout. You definitely know your stuff. 8)

Re: Any Bowhunters out there?
Update...I HATE THE USPS!!!
I learned that UPS was the best when I worked in shipping and recieving as a teen. My bow isnt here because the postal service SUCKS! I paid for overnight and it didnt come yesterday. I called my local branch to see what was up. PS-yeah, there was a "weather condition" that prevented the Express mail plane from landing. Stink-umm yeah, I drove to work in it this morning, its called FOG. >:( PS-yeah, they couldnt land so we got NO Xpress mail today. Stink-what the hell do yall have for navigation onboard that thing, a sextant and a sundial?! *::) What if its foggy tomorrow?? It probably will be ya know. PS-dont know, we will have to see. Sure enough, its foggy today too. I just called. Stink-Xpress plane land this morning? PS-dont know yet...a few more minutes. Wonderful, I cant wait. Im sure itll be wonderful uplifting news. *::) Im ready to shoot something...thats why they call it "going postal". I am going to go home for lunch (if my bow aint here yet) and kick the cat. *:D |
Re: Any Bowhunters out there?
It get there Stink or should I start looking on Fox News for the most recent postal incident :o
|
Re: Any Bowhunters out there?
Another bow-hunting nut here.
I've got to many hobbies/activities, but I like it all and can't give up on anything. Ohio has a liberal 4 month bow season, so I can go out as I make time and not pack it all into a week or month. Spend a deal of time on a forum called 'archerytalk.com'. Make my own trail cams now, also. Good luck this year I've got a Hoyt. |
Re: Any Bowhunters out there?
Well guys, a little update.
I GOT MY BOW!!! This has saved the lives of many postal workers!!! BTW, DONT pay for overnight USPS.....it dont mean crap!!! I payed for next day Express on tuesday (and it was shipped then) and got it saturday. :P On a more positive note the Instinct is SWEET! She setup well and I had her paper tuned in no time. I even got a couple pins sighted in and love the way it shoots. I also picked up a couple more goodies for it today. One of my exciting new addons is the new Lumenoks that light up whenshot and stay lit for up to 40 hours...pretty cool! 8) Ill make a video (a G rated one) right at dark tomorrow with the Lumenoks on and show yall. Its pretty cool, like a red laser flying through the air. 8) Here is a picture of my new baby...not a great pic, but itll do for now. http://www.forumpictureprocessor.com...ew%20008_1.jpg Wiseguy, what kinda Hoyt ya shootin? Aint a trykon is it? |
Re: Any Bowhunters out there?
Oh yeah, made my own lighted nocks as well. They work great. About 2.50 a piece. Very cool to have that tracer effect.
I'll find my cam and get you a pic of my setup. |
Re: Any Bowhunters out there?
|
Re: Any Bowhunters out there?
I have some bear compound bows and easton shafts etc...that I will let go cheap that have had little use...Frank
|
Re: Any Bowhunters out there?
Let me know Frank, I don't know a lot about the wheel bows but looking for another almost adult bow for my 14 year old son.
|
Re: Any Bowhunters out there?
Willy: I'll dig them out of the attic and see what I got. One is the whitetail hunter which I think is a 55 to 70 with cams and the other is a Kodiac or Grizzly which is a 70 or 80 I think..I will get back to you with what all I got..Frank
|
Re: Any Bowhunters out there?
gotcha, I got to tell you I shoot a 60 lbs. Hoyt one cam type bow now and it is very fast, I shoot thru deer like they are not there. Always have to dig my arrow out of the grass after I find it.
|
Re: Any Bowhunters out there?
Willy: I have a whitetail two which is set at 60 but I think can be adjusted by changing the little wheels as well as length of pull. The other one is a Grizzley set at 80 which can also be adjusted back or forth. Both are set at 30in length but can be adjusted. Any bow shop can do it for a few bucks. I got two dozen easton XX 75's at 32in length, two boxes of thunderhead 125 broad heads, target tips ,two bowfishing reels with line, and arm guards , hunting pin sights , stabilizers etc etc. They are both like new ..E mail me at [email protected] if interested and if not I will probably put them on craigslist..Frank

Re: Any Bowhunters out there?
