NEW! Blue's DEER PICTURES @@LOOK HERE@@

Alright all you picture junkies, grab a tissue cause its a sad sad day in BUCK LAND.

Had a dentist appointment this morning at 9:20 am. Found out about it yesterday afternoon. Thought to myself, "Self, I guess there's no sense in driving all the way to work (40 min) if I just gotta turn back around to make your dentist appointment. You might as well just slip into the woods and hunt until about quarter til nine."

I said, WOW self - that's a great idea!

The next morning the internal alarm clock in me goes off loud and clear at 6am. I hit "snooze" (open hand right to the snaggers) and laid up for 10 more minutes, thinking seriously about not going hunting and getting some extra shuteye. After the 10 minutes I jump up ready to go.

I've got a major hike to my hunting grounds - like 30 feet - so I have to really hurry to make it in time. I'm thinkin, "Self, its almost daylight! You shoulda been there by now!"

Twenty more minutes peel off the clock and I'm almost ready to go. One last trip upstairs to top off the coleman thermos with fresh ice water to keep me hydrated during the morning hunt.

It's now 6:30am and I grab the woodmaster 30/06 and pop a shell into the chamber before walking out the front door. Time for the grueling walk. Exactly 15 seconds later, I open the door to my stand. Which happens to be my small utility building about 10 x 12 with windows on each end. A small amount of light is creeping through the trees. I carefully close the door to the building and tippy toe over to my desk to sit down my thermos. Next, I plug in the electric heater and quietly have a seat before opening the window through which I observe my feeding lane.

By the way, so far I've only threw out two 50 lb bags of corn and 1 and one half bags of apples spread over 2 feedings a week apart. After all, this insn't my main hunt. Or should I say "wasn't"?

I'm all settled in and ready to see some deer. I know they are probably on the way based on the last several times I've hunted. The question is, will they arrive before my sister comes to pick the kids up from school at 7:50 am? The answer is, no. Actually, when my sister started down my driveway, a big buck walked hastily accross the back part of my feeding lane. I quickly got ready and put the crosshairs in his direction. I can see he's nervous about my sister's van, who just blew the horn twice mind you, and is now sitting in the driveway running waiting on my kids to come out. About 3 seconds pass and I think twice before electing not to shoot through branches and trees. Three more seconds and his head and neck are in a perfect little clearing, head high and staring back toward the running van. I put the crosshairs right on his adams apple and proceed to squeeze. Half way in the trigger goes....steady.....then he drops his head and moseys on off. I'm cursing myself. "Why didn't you shoot self?? Self - you are the biggest dummy! I knew I couldn't count on you - you idiot!"

And to think - I'd just been bragging about how I like my trigger because it has such a good feel to it.

So, at this point I'm ticked at my sis and MYSELF. I know I have close to an hour left to hunt, but my experience says you just won't see the nice buck twice in one day. Especially after he's been spooked.

Only 10 minutes pass and 4 does come in from the direction the buck exited. They feed for 30 minutes without a care in the world and walk off in the opposite direction - away from where the buck went. I'm still mad as fire but encouraged by the fact that deer came from the direction the buck went.

8:45 am. I'm getting ready to leave, dreading the dental cleaning because I don't floss like I should and all of a sudden a large doe comes flying out from the direction of where the buck had gone and crosses my lane without even thinking of feeding. I say, "Self, she's probably running from that nice buck so get ready!" I grab my hearing protection and steady the rifle. The doe is still within site but looking jittery. Not a minute passes and here he comes - right behind her! Its the same buck I saw an hour earlier! He's not interested in feeding so I know I must act at the right moment. A couple of steps into my lane and KABOOM! He jumps and trots off like he's unfazed. I went ahead to look for him since I was short on time. Followed a good blood trail about 30 yards and see him laying there. Its a nice 6 pointer! I hoped he was bigger, but this will do any day for me! Nicest buck I've killed in years!

I proceeded to drag him the whopping 40 yards from the house. I used my jeep to take it next door to dad's house. I had to wait around at his house for about 30 minutes for him to come home from work to help me get him hung so I snapped some pix while I waited.

This shot shows what looks like the beginnings of a drop tine? See it?
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d7...S2010058-1.jpg
Here are the other 2 bucks I've taken over the last week and a half. The one I thought was a 5 point is actually a 4 point. I didn't notice the missing brow-tine on the one side til today. The other is the small basket 8 pointer from Saturday.

The 8 point rack looked kinda like a small moose rack. Perfect for a jackalope!

Hammer man, sorry there are no action shots. I was trying to get a pic of the bullet going in but couldn't reach the cam. I'll do better next time ;D

Re: NEW! Blue's DEER PICTURES @@LOOK HERE@@

I don't think I mentioned this but I had to leave the deer until after the dentist. I got done at the dentist at 10:30 and had to wait on dad til 11:00. Then had to clean by myself and got er done, meat iced down, and carcass hauled off by 12:00 noon. It takes a little longer by yourself - or at least it does me. Hardest and most time consuming parts are - sawing legs and horns off.

Judgeing from the pictures of Blue, I'd say he's no more than 16 years old.

We need you to come squeeky clean with us, how old are you. Did you really shoot that deer. Are you sure that is your Jeep.

Guys looks like we need a Cyber Nanny to keep these imposters out. ;D ;D

Oh man I LMAO at every single one of your replies!

Macojoe, when you're as studly as me you don't need no stinkin ID ;D

Hammer, doh! Golly I gotta get that tag pic outta there! Identity thieves are plotting against me!

Parisht, that's not my preferred target, but it makes it harder when they're walking so I had to aim for body mass. I like to stay away from the front shoulder if at all possible. I like to shoot the neck. I think they never know what hits em when shot in the neck. This last deer hopped off like I had missed him at first. I'd much rather them fall over dead.

Gotta come clean guys.

I'm only 6 months old. I have a genetic disorder that makes my body age 30 times faster than the average person.

I don't have a jeep - that's a cardboard billboard I made. And the deer, well that was my friend Chad who was nice enough to dress up in a deer outfit for me and act dead. (If you're lookin - thanks buddy ;))

Ok I feel better now. So what you guys wanna talk about?

Good job Blue and nice shot, nice buck. Wish I could hunt in a T shirt weather and out my back door, in my shed, with a desk and chair, hot thermos, newspaper, long drag up the the hills out, father next door to help, shooting lanes, big dummy bucks returning to the scene of the crime. Probably had that pretty wife of yours inside waiting for you when you were done huh.
Good man, don't get better than that ;)

Good kill Blue! We got shut out for the second year in a row. I have a question though, we field dress our deer, if we shoot one, by your hanging photo yours hasn't been gutted yet. Was that a question? Also why do you hang it from the rear legs? We hang ours by the horns unless they are going to be mounted.

Three bucks you are a lucky man! Billy Mac ;D

Blue_Runner 12-01-2006 01:15 PM

Re: NEW! Blue's DEER PICTURES @@LOOK HERE@@

Thanks Tin and Mac!

Mac, if we get another one I'll take pics of the process we use.

We don't gut the deer. The reason is because in our opinion there's not much to gain by gutting besides inner loin (best meat but not much of it) and the ribs (never had em but bet thier good). Not to mention that I hate looking at and smelling guts!

We hang by the legs and skin from there down. Eventually skinning the cape all the way down to just under the chin. Take the front shoulders first, then the "backstraps", saw off head, and finally, take the 2 rear quarters.

How do ya'll do it when you hang from the horns? I've thought about trying that.

I know other people that skin them in a wooden trough, which seems unusual to me, but apparently works well.

willy 12-01-2006 02:44 PM

Re: NEW! Blue's DEER PICTURES @@LOOK HERE@@

I dress them in the field Blue, want to cool that meat as fast as I can. Take the liver sometimes if we are camping for some good eats. Pull the loins out when I get home. Hang by back legs on a gambrel and start skinning from the back legs down and then quarter and trim all meat off and bring inside and butcher and package. If we do it in a camp where I won't be going home soon I will saw the rib section out and cook them slow over wood that has burned down to coals in the fire and coat them repeatedly with some barbecue type concoction. If not I just run a thin blade in and out of each rib opening at home and take those pieces and use them for chopped meat.

Stinky_Hooker 12-01-2006 03:39 PM

Re: NEW! Blue's DEER PICTURES @@LOOK HERE@@

Although i wasnt asked, Ill chime in. ;D

I do not gut. If its a morning hunt or its warm, ill go ahead and clean em. If its a "cold" night 44 or less Ill let em hang by the rear legs till the next day, doesnt hurt a thing. I quarter em up and and pull loins off then amd put on ice for at least 3 days. All the while I am draining the water and replenishing with fresh ice. After that I pull the quarters out and debone or take to processor for ground...usually do ground, we eat the heck out of it.

I cut up loins (backstraps and cook like in the recipe section...beat em, marinate, butterfly , stuff with connecuh, close up and wrap in bacon and grill. Best in da world!! I never buy steaks anymore, even at restaurants! 8)

We hunt in the UP for an extended period 5 -7 days. Therefore we field dress and hang til the trip home. This year was a warm year with day temps 35-40 but we shot no deer. Non of us butcher our own deer, we have them done at a local processer. How many can you take in a season? Our firearm limit is two. Billy Mac ;D

Two per day , only one allowed to be antlered. 108 days counting bow season so, 216 a year. ;D

However, that doesnt happen. I got 10 last year, (coulda killed alot more) but wont pull the trigger that many times this year. Got 2 so far, gonna get to five for the meat and then watch for Mr Bigs. 8)

Re: NEW! Blue's DEER PICTURES @@LOOK HERE@@

We put ours on ice for at least 3 days as well to drain the blood and so called "wild" taste out. Does it really taste wild?

Then we take it out and wrap up each piece in freezer paper.

When it comes time to cook, we invite a bunch of friends over and slow cook over wood coals. We have a special bbq sause that we use. Then we chop or slice it up and eat it on a samich with bbq slaw.

Its good! ;)

Re: NEW! Blue's DEER PICTURES @@LOOK HERE@@

MMM MMM MMM I'm a comin Blue ;D

I'll tell you a way my wife makes it in a pressure cooker, a roast some seasonings, lipton onion soup mix and a little water, cook the meat for the first short pressure session then open and add potato's onions carrots, a little bit more water and steam up again. In about 45 minutes or less you have the most fabulous meal and the meat crumbles off the bone and under your fork. And the seasoning is all the way thru the meat and vegies, not just on the outside.

Oh honey you know that roast we have from Dans deer ;D

One other way i like it...did some tloin the other day this way.

Slice up some Tloin into 1-1.5" thick pieces or you can do the whole inner loins. I did mine with whole inners, four of em.

-As always, beat your meat with hammer and marinate in whatever, I like Moores

-Fry about 6 pieces of bacon in skillet.

-pull bacon out mince it up and set aside..LEAVE DRIPPINGS IN PAN!!

-Keep drippings hot and add about 1/4 cup brown sugar to skillet. Mix up in grease until caramelized sp?...

-add loin and minced up onions (or not onion, either way you prefer)

-Seer it good and then turn down slighty, add bacon back to mix and stir fry untill medium..(medium rare for me) nice and PINK in he middle! Only 4 or 5 minutes, tops!! The two things that kill deer meat is overcooking and not tenderizing...oh and .300 mags! ;D

-Serve with brown sugar/bacon dribble on top.

make you slap yo mama, I promise! 8)

I think Ill put into recipe section. ;)

Blue_Runner 12-01-2006 06:14 PM

Re: NEW! Blue's DEER PICTURES @@LOOK HERE@@

I'll have to try the tenderizing, but I agree 1000% on the overcooking. Gotta be medium/medium rare.

I also heard on television last year that ALL deer meat should be frozen before you eat it. There is supposedly some bacteria that deer can potentially have that cooking will not kill, but freezing will.

Also, if you tenderize it good then sprinkle some meat tenderizer in the marinade the holes allow it to get in there better. Itll melt in your mouth. :D

Not braggin on my cookin, but these thing REALLY make venison as good or better IMO than beef. I have made several ANTI deer eaters come over beggin me for some when Im grillin. ;)
