I visited the Skools Out Boatyard Today
Me and my dad have been looking for a 16 ft jon boat or skiff and Skools knew of one right near his house. Well he was nice enough to go check it out and take some pics for us the other day and this evening me dad hit the interstate and headed towards Skools house.
Took a quick tour when we got there, then proceeded to go look at the boat for sale nearby which was a 15.5 ft 1993 Carolina skiff w/ 1985 60hp johnson engine - all in pretty rough cosmetic but solid condition. It was 2 guys from el Mexico. One was named Hector and the one selling went by "Danny" - interesting name for a guy hailing from Mexico don't you think... Anyway he was asking 2 grand for the package which he claimed had a $500 gps and working power tilt/trim. Well, the gps was an eagle fishfinder and the power tilt/trim was there but the trim motor was bad and cylinders probably leaked ::) We already had it in our head that we would offer $1200 and go as high as $1500 because thats what the package was worth to us. So we heard it run and checked compression which was all good then offered up the $1200 cash, he held firm, then we reluctantly went to $1500 and Hector said they'd just keep it..."Danny" said he'd go $1800 and that was it. So without further adew we cut our losses and went back to the Skools Marine Depot and finished our tour. I tell ya what, the pics don't do justice for the boats that Skools has! The continental he just finished is beautiful and the old sea ox he got for free is has amazing lines and thick thick glass ;) I can't wait for him to rebuilt that baby 8) Its way bigger than I originally thought from pics. Then there was the big Wellcraft that ByGrace used to own - sweeeet ride and also the big azz Sea Ray that he bought for pennies on the dollar ::) Then on over to the $75 fish and ski with 130 Volvo Penta which was a super nice boat too. Last but not least I got a good look at the trusty 78 V20 that he's been working on - that transom job he did is no joke! Thick and solid! Well, the trip wasn't a total bust since we got to chill out in the boatyard for a while but I wish Hector and Danny a) knew a little more english and b) could have worked with us more. P.S. Skools - by the way, I called "Danny" on the way home and asked if he'd be willing to part with the boat without the $500 gps for $1500........he held his ground on $1800 ;D I guess him and Hector will be fishing alot this winter ;D Thanks again bro - I enjoyed the tour and meet and greet. We'll have to do it again some time. |
Re: I visited the Skools Out Boatyard Today
Skools doesn't know it yet, but I plan on taking one of those tours at the end of the month :P
Nice analysis BR! Hey, sorry that didn't work out for you. I'm sure something will come along to suit your needs and pocketbook. |
Re: I visited the Skools Out Boatyard Today

Yes, we will be patient and wait for the right deal. Our boat is out there right now - somewhere! |

Re: I visited the Skools Out Boatyard Today
Cool on the whaler. Did I tell you I went to look at that red hull skiff thingy you sent me near my house? It wasn't all that great and definitley not for what he wanted.
|
Re: I visited the Skools Out Boatyard Today
what was it he wanted?
hey if i find another Dixie like mine for $75 do ya want me to pick it up for ya? will that style work? |
Re: I visited the Skools Out Boatyard Today
Well, I'm not crazy about i/o but for $75 I'll take anything in the world - even if its pink like Ferms jeep *;D
But really, I prefer something with 50hp or less for fuel economy - 40 hp would be great - and flat bottom either aluminum or fiberglass, not too important either way. *Preferrably 20" transom and needs to be at the least 5ft in the floor. * That red one had 4ft in the floor but the 3 benches he had in it made the boat look tiny. *You couldn't have walked a foot without tripping. *I can't remember what he wanted but it had a 1960 mercury 20hp motor that was probly a collectors item *:-/ He said it ran but I wasn't interested in that motor in the slightest. If not flat bottom I would also be interested in the whaler or mckee craft style cathedral hull (if that's what they call it) |

i thought BR was going to offer lol. i was willing to sell with all sets of wheels and both soft tops. |
Re: I visited the Skools Out Boatyard Today
Oh good glad you got it. Yep if I'd have just procrastinated another day or two I could have saved shipping (only 5 bucks, no sweat).
I hope it works for you. At the very least you get to see what makes em tick and what makes them cost so darn much ::) |
Re: I visited the Skools Out Boatyard Today
I think my dad really wanted that vette. He bought a 69 1/2 mustang fastback brand new when he was 19 - drove the thing off the showroom floor. I'm sure he would have loved to had a vette in his younger days.
Funny thing is he kept that tang a while and sold it. A few years later he bought it back and then finally sold it for good. |
Re: I visited the Skools Out Boatyard Today
