Trailer Changes
 

Considering removing the rollers and replacing them with bunkers. Bunkers would be about 4" x 10" and beveled to match the hull angle. Why, have always had bunkers and believe rollers don't give as good support as bunkers. Any comments or suggestions?
Also, the trailer only has a single axel. Believe another axel is needed. Hammer was good enough to post pictures of the inprogress boat transom repair. In one of the pictures youi can see the rear of the trailer. Have no ides of the trailers capacity as I bought (stole) the entire rig in mid December 2006. As a matter of fact, have never riden in the boat. Any comments or suggestions?

I prefer rollers because where I load my boat, its steep and as hell and I have a hand winch. Rollers make it easier to get on the trailer. I have a single axel trailer and have no weight problems. But I only go maybe 4-blocks to the boat ramp.

People always say that you don't get good support from rollers, but I can wiggle my rollers while the boat is on the trailer, I figure that my rollers are carrying maybe 125 lbs each.

Many of these hulls been sitting on rollers for 25 years and I have yet to see one suffer damage from rollers.

I believe bunks do support better then rollers, but that said I have a roller and would never change!!

Here in Mass. most ramps are step and a pain, I have a few buddy's with bunks that have to wait for the tide to launch or retrieve there boats.

They hate it when I can come and go as i please!

I had a single axle as well for the first 4 years and never had any issues.

That is till the tire passed me on the highway! :o

i perfer bunks here's mine under both wellcrafts both trailers are the exact same size and brand.

Hammer, the cross member was about 150 plus a little hardware if I can remember.

mine is a single axle with rollers. need them due to steep ramps and low tides...never had a problem

...as long as the axle, suspension and tires are rated to haul the load, single axles are no probleemo ;D ...

Hammer, just so you know, the springs on that trailer were a year old and they were rated something like 2650 each.

Most of my trailer supplies come from Delmarva Marine in Princess Anne. GT Marine in same town also very good.

I went single trailer for a long time!! Never a problem. But I like the tandem when I went knew, and since wifey said ok I got it!! she no says yes to often! :'(

I have a single, have had them most of my life with several diffrent boats. Mine rides well, tows very well and seems to be more than enough weight wise.
My problem is for when things are not going well, I have had two tire blow outs over the years on single axles. One was my Robalo and the other was a friends AquaSport. If you are highway speeds like I was both times it can be very dangerous. The one on the Robalo was at 60mph and by time I was able to get the truck stopped safely it had ground the rim down to unusable and gave us a little scare.
On the other boat I was not driving, we were negotiating a curve in the county highway and the outside tire blew. The force blew the wheel and hub and sheared the axle. In about 5 seconds. Put the boat over on its side and dislodged from the supports.
Same thing with my camper, this time when I bought new I got dual axles and wheels.
If I buy another trailer it weill be dual axle. They are safer for you and everyone around you. And a blowout won't destroy your investment. Also the risks of a traumatic type tire deflation is much less, usually you just get a flat and change it. They are harder to manuever but who gives a sh!t

I agree with Willy, I had a blowout once towing my Starcraft. It started fishtailing and I nearly landed in the ditch.

I was going to get a dual axle trailer for it, but now I dont have to.

The key on the single trailers is to get real good trailer rated tires!
Car tires just don't have the plys to hold toghter! I got 6 ply tires for my camper and the boat and never had problems.

The big house trailers use 14 1/2 ten plys!! :o

I like bunks better...after you launch your bunks treat the carpet with several coats of Armor All...good as rollers, I promise. ;)


Ive never seen a situation where a guy with rollers has any advantage to launching or loading over me. I have some pretty steep ramps too. I know the 18 aint a V20 but its still heavy as hell for its size.

Many of the ramps I use you need a roller trailer unless you want to be at the mercy of the tide. Many times I only have enough water to get my V on to the first roller and I crank the rest of the way. With my Dads old boat we used to actually pull the tilt pin on occasion to get her out of the water.

Thats most of the ramps here!! Got to follow the tides good, or you just might not get back in till way after dark!!

Wait thats not a bad thing!! Hello is this work, I am stuck in the water cause I missed the tide! I am sorry but I am going to be stuck out here for the next 6 hours and not make it in tonight. ;) ;D ;D ;)

Me and my neighbor buddy used that one twice last year, sorry honey we missed thetide, can't get in to the ramp. At the end of the season one of the open ramps I have is so loaded with mud that I can only get about 40-50 yards from it at anything before two hours on either side of low tide.

We have a ramp here that always gets mud, and if you get in to it you will sink to your axle!

I know it happened to me!! Had to push boat off and town came with a back ho and dug the trailer out.

They then cleaned the ramp and I was able to get the boat.

IF done properly, you can really extend the life of a roller trailer. I back down until the water is maybe 4 inches from the rear hub. Then let her roll of maintaining control by the winch. Recovery works same way thanks to powerwinch. None of my hardware, hubs brakes, axles and such ever touch the water. Try that with a bunk trailer. ;)

Man yall got some F'ed up boat ramps....get the state on that crap...they aint doin thier job or sumthin!! ::)
