Robalo full transom
Well guys the buddy that bought my stainless outboard bracket when I opted out of my V20 project was ready to get started this weekend so we did. He has an older, but pretty nice 22' Robalo cuddy that we are hoping to do some tuner fishing in this year. Having been in it last year in pretty rough stuff I am excited to see how well it preforms with this addition. It already has a hellishly deep V in it and will bust up the sloppy stuff extremely well for a boat it's size. 8)
We got going on it and started closing up the notch and building the top cap for the rear as well. I walked him along and let him do most of the work since I had allot of stuff to do on my own boat as well. He much preferred it this way as he is very eager to learn. We got it closed in and sealed. The glassing will start this week or this weekend. Sorry for the pic quality, this is just my phone, didn't have the good camera with me. http://www.forumpictureprocessor.com...021707_001.jpg Here is the after shot: http://www.forumpictureprocessor.com...021807_006.jpg The bracket is getting its new powder coating as we speak. I expect to have it back sometime this week. Ill post pics of it when I get it. 8) |
Re: Robalo full transom
Looking good! Thats going to make a nice Tuna boat!!

bRe: Robalo full transom
The guy who is doing my transom refused to just fill in the area where the notch was due to the fact that my bracket would bolt up between the notch and a new section. If the bracket would have bolted up on the factory transom he would have just fill it in. As it turned out he found my transom was in worse shape than we thought. Now I can rest assured that my transom is in good shape, and actually stronger where the bracket will bolt up due to an extra layer of plywood in that area. :)

Re: Robalo full transom
I agree with your guy. I would have done the same thing.
This one bolts up all under the notch...the small "starter" holes are already there, you just cant see em in the pic. ;) |
Re: Robalo full transom
That Robalo is gonna be plum sexy. ;)
|
Re: Robalo full transom
Looking good STINK . Did you teach your buddy how to work while wearing a thong on ? ;D
|
Re: Robalo full transom
Yeah Hammer, he is gonna be itchin after all that glass grinding in the thong too. :o
|
Re: Robalo full transom
Both boats look great guys, keep up the good work ;)
|
Re: Robalo full transom
Hey 2ndchance, did your glass guy maintain the curve of the transom or is it straight now? I've been staring at your picks and I still can't tell.
|
Re: Robalo full transom
Never liked that curve in the transom, No reason that I know of why they did it like that. Makes looking for a full bracket hard to find.
|
Re: Robalo full transom
Looks like it has a bow to it?? Might be just me? But straight it fine also!!
Hammer I have a straight bracket on a curved transom, nothing a couple of shims won't fix. |
Re: Robalo full transom
M.J. have you looked out your kitchen window lately. What Bracket. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D :P
|
Re: Robalo full transom
The bow is still there. The way he did it was to remove the outer skin. The inside glass was left in place and the new wood epoxied and screwed in place therefor it maintained the original shape.
|
Re: Robalo full transom
The bow in the transom is for strength,
it is the same principal as a dam on a river. Even though you may see some that look straight, the dam is always bowed up stream. We do the same with car and truck chassis, they are built with a bow up from the ground and then when all the remaining components are mounted, the vehicle ends up level to the ground. |
Re: Robalo full transom
Got the bracket back from powder coating. We will continue work on the transom this weekend. I kinda want it back now that Ive seen how good it looks! ;D

Re: Robalo full transom
Looks just like mine now!! They did great job!! Did they blast all the old off before the new or did they just clean and repower over the old?
|
Re: Robalo full transom
They blasted it, antifoul primered it then powdercoated MJ. 8)
|
Re: Robalo full transom
Looks great ;D I want one
|
Re: Robalo full transom
They put the antifoul on as a primer???
before the powder coat??? That goes against everything I know about powder paint. Powder needs a good solid clean metal finish. Isn't antifoul designed to shed? |
Re: Robalo full transom
Not antifoul paint, antifoul PRIMER.
He said it helps the paint to better stick. The primer adheres to the stainless better. I hadnt heard of it before either, but he builds custom race car frames and such and garanteed me that before the paint chips the stainless would bend. :o I let it slide around in the truck on the way home ( I swerved quite a bit back and forth too) and beat it all against the tool box to test it. When I got it home the tool box was dented, but no scratch on the powder coating. ;D |
Re: Robalo full transom
Wow, you learn something new every day. ;)
|
Re: Robalo full transom
PRETTY! Might we ask - how much did the work cost? Or do we even want to know?
Looks better than new! |
Re: Robalo full transom
I was wondering price too?
|
Re: Robalo full transom
:'( :'( Wish I had it. :'( :'(
|
Re: Robalo full transom
Guys I dropped it off in pretty rough shape...lots of barnacles, old paint, etc....
For the sand blasting to finish he quoted me 150-200 about a year ago, but all said and done I payed 260 total today. Still pretty decent I think. 8) |
Re: Robalo full transom
Stinky, a buddy of mine used to have a late 80s Robalo cuddy like that ... 2160?...GREAT ridein' HEAVY hull w/ PLEANTY of V 8) ... he had a 200 Black Max and agreed it was under-powered ... what's yer buddy pushin' his with?...
|
Re: Robalo full transom
Stink has been neglecting us. No pics. of the work he's been doing on it. I bet ya he's sharing all of his pics. on his Bayliner site. *>:( ;D ;D ;D
|
Re: Robalo full transom
That thing must be heavy as hell!! all Stainless :o
Mine is Aluminum, weight is 125 pounds. |
Re: Robalo full transom
M.J., did you have a template for drilling the holes or did you have to line up the bracket, level every possible way then mork the holes ???
|
Re: Robalo full transom
Quote:
I made a templet out of cardboard, and used that to mark my holes. Came out pretty good!! I had to drill 3 different items and get them to all line up! |
Re: Robalo full transom
I morked my hole once...$250 doctor bill ...and a stern talkin' to from the vacum-cleaner repair man :o ...

Re: Robalo full transom
heres a little update:
Well we didn't get quite as much done this weekend due to the low air temps and rain on and off. We did get the rest of the transom outside cleaned up and primed. Here is my buddy Darren( boat owner) sanding out the last little bit before primer goes on. http://www.forumpictureprocessor.com...100_0704_4.jpg Here it is at the end of the day Saturday after primer. http://www.forumpictureprocessor.com...100_0707_6.jpg Its coming along nicely, but we really wanted to get paint on it. Oh well, we will this week one day. I am waiting on the primer to harden enough to wet sand it. Its drying extremely slow because of our cool weather. Warmer temps this week should help us in that department. The Durabak is suppose to be in in a few days and we will prep the interior floor for that as well. I still have some glassing to do to finish up the new bilge too. |
Re: Robalo full transom
Well the finish coats went on yesterday afternoon. Went have some glass work to do in the bilge today and we are prepping it for Durabak. That came in yesterday as well.
Wish me luck! 8) |
Re: Robalo full transom
Dang, will everybody just calm down about this transom job Im doing....all this support is KILLIN me. ::)
|
Re: Robalo full transom
Stinky, it appears that you have taken our breath away. ;D Nice work on the transom, but we've seen your transom before ;D
|
Re: Robalo full transom
What does that boat have for a motor? 20" either that or has a tall transom!
my 25" is way up on the transom on the V, Thats why I did not use the 1" for every foot rule, just would have been way up there! Looks great! |
Re: Robalo full transom
Its a 25" motor on a 30" transom MJ, thats wy its so tall.
|
Re: Robalo full transom
Here we go...finally got the floor rolled in Durabak and the transom and bilge finished.
I really like the way the Dback rdoes...it covers well, dries fast and seems to be pretty good stuff. We will see what kinda abuse it'll take, but if they can land helicopters on it it ought to be good enough for me. ;D http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...an/boat056.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...an/boat057.jpg I could have spent more time getting the inner and outer transom smoother, but he was in a hurry and more than happy with the results. He just wants a good durable fishing boat and isn't worried about a few imperfections. The back area will get a total of a half sheet of starboard. It will hinge to open the live well and hinge opposite that for bilge access. Ill post pics when I get it done...should be pretty nice. 8) |
Re: Robalo full transom
Looking great!
Did he get the smooth paint or the non slip?? I have the non slip and you will never slip!! But it is hard on the knees and stuff if you have to get down on it! I am hoping after walking on a bit it will wear down the sharpness. |
Re: Robalo full transom
Its the non slip MJ...worked great. We got the bracket on this morning just ahead of the storms. *He took her home to hang the motor and get her tuned in. http://www.forumpictureprocessor.com...041407_001.jpg I remeasured after it was all done and Im worried it IS too low. I used a long wallboard square to check the height of the rear of the bracket (where the motor mounts) and I came up with 22". :-/ That would put it just right for a 20" motor, NOT a 25". He is going to take it and mount the outboard and slip it in the water to see how it looks and works. I could have SWORN I measured it out right the day we done it. I remember checking my math several times. I went 25" and then add the "lip" on the bracket for 27", not 22". All we can do at this point is try it, but I sure hope I dont end up having to move that bracket. *:o |
