Starboard question.............
Who here is the expert or where is some good info on cutting and working with Starboard (sp?)?
Thanks, Maury |
Re: Starboard question.............
MJ would the man on this. Airslot and I just got done doing pulpits with 1 1/2 starboard. Use the same tools as you would with wood.
Watch ya doing. Post Pics. as well. ;D |
Re: Starboard question.............
You use just regular wood tools, Router, Table saw, Jig Saw, Drill bits, Ect Ect Ect...
When using a jig saw you want to try to move fast because if you go slow the plastic melts and gules it self back toghter, sior you to cut again. You can't glue anything toghter all must be screwed toghter. Pre drill your screw holes. when using for floor covers and hatch covers leave a little wiggle room cause it does expand slightly in the heat of the day. eveything in red is starboard on my boat! http://syncboard.com/albums/Boat-Tac...34_G.sized.jpg http://syncboard.com/albums/Boat-Tac...77_G.sized.jpg And this great Tackle Box built by CB and I and built in to the front port dash, as you can see in the pictures, its all screwed toghter with SS Wood screws. http://syncboard.com/albums/Boat-Tac..._229.sized.jpg http://syncboard.com/albums/Boat-Tac..._206.sized.jpg http://syncboard.com/albums/Boat-Tac..._226.sized.jpg You can see more pictures in my gallery! |
Re: Starboard question.............
Thanks gents,
I'm just planning now. That 88' DC has those dark plastic doors everywhere - which I think look terrible. I think white would clean it up. Where is the best place to purchase? Got a West Marine close or is an online source better? Maury http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y19...na/Iris006.jpg http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y19...na/Iris004.jpg |
Re: Starboard question.............
Usually the shipping costs kill you. If you got a local boat supply shop they carry the stuff and it's a lot cheaper planning to get by the whole sheet. Around here 3/4'' runs about $300 and 1/2'' near $275. Don"t be afraid to drive a hundred miles to save good money.
Oh the sheets are normally 54x96. |
Re: Starboard question.............
Search out "Lumberslinger"'s posts. He just redid all those black doors on his boat. He's got the same boat and has put some serious elbow grease into it, and it shows bigtime.

Re: Starboard question.............
Hey MJ How thick are your floor hatches? Do they give a little when you stand on them. I need to make a couple for my V.
|
Re: Starboard question.............
Mine, MJ and Reels should be 3/4.
|
Re: Starboard question.............
Yep...3/4"...and no, they don't give... ;) ...
|
Re: Starboard question.............
They are soild as a rock!! 3/4"
I got something called Seaboard, same as Starboard in every way, but price! I live in Ma and got in Boston. Maybe you can call them to see were there is a suplier near you? Here is info on Seaboard http://www.modernplastics.com/june05/wdseaboard.html 1-800-243-9696 Price for different sheets https://secure15.nexternal.com/share...unt2=178687691 |
Re: Starboard question.............
Maury,
Can I get dibs on your old covers? I actually like them. Please keep me in mind. Thanks! |
Re: Starboard question.............
Done.............if and when I get around to changing them out. I guess I need to get the old girl in the water and see what I really need to work on first. Hopefully, not much!

Re: Starboard question.............
Awesome!
I know what you mean about getting her splashed first. I've owned mine for over a year and still haven't gotten her in the water. Lord willing, this Summer will be The Summer. ;) |
Re: Starboard question.............
Im a starboard ho too....it rocks!! :D

Re: Starboard question.............
Going to need a new dash to go with the new engine. Going from a bunch of gauges to just a multifunction one and a fuel gauge. Too many holes to fill so starting new. Stopped of at Freemans in the Dorchester neighborhood of Boston. They had 2 18x30 cutoffs in 1/4" light gray color. A perfect match to my deck paint. Total cost $10! Plenty left over for other projects.

Re: Starboard question.............
Thats were I got mine! But I bought 2 full sheets to do all my stuff. 1 sheet 3/4 and 1 sheet 3/8
Works with any wood tools! When using a jigsaw just move kind of quick, or it will melt back toghter, but easy to recut just run the blade thur again Table saw or a skill saw are your best friend! I used a panal blade on my table saw. It routers nice also!! ;) |
Re: Starboard question.............
Here's a bait-tank I whittled outta Starboard a while back...all router cuts...no saw ... round lid; made a radius arm screwed to bottom of router for perfect circle... all lids; made a jig for router to follow ....radius arm and jigs made of masonite ...all cuts require 2 passes w/a 1/8" plunge bit in 1/2" material...3 passes in 3/4" material ... saw blades are great w this stuff, but if a router will do it, it leaves a SMOOTH egde w/ NO sanding needed... 8) ...

Re: Starboard question.............
...and you call ME fancy ... run outside in the dark on your bad foot and look at that tackle-box again ;D ;D ...
That tank lid is about 23 or 24" dia. ... but 1st ya gotta find the tank yer gonna put it on ...that'll be the size MJ needs 8) ... |
Re: Starboard question.............
I just got back from Kmart, them eletric cars are great!! I want CB to go there with me and play bumper cars!! ;)
I have a tank, I don't think I have the talant to do that! Tackle box was easy!! just all stright cuts, with table saw, and screw toghter . |

Re: Starboard question.............
Somebody mention Pics. ;D

Re: Starboard question.............
MJ... 1st you need a lip...measure diameter of your tank...you have single-wall tank, so your lip goes inside (mine's dbl-wall, so lip sits on top)...
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y90.../IMGP07862.jpg You can cut one big ring for the lip or 4 quarter-rings to save material (saves a LOT!!) http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y90.../IMGP07842.jpg Make quarters few inches longer than you'll need so you can trim to fit Here are the radius arms ... remove router-shoe and screw these back in place ... pivot screw in center measure to router-bit (1/8" plunge) x 2 = finished diameter of cut http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y90.../IMGP07782.jpg short is INSIDE cut of ring, LONG IS outside cut http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y90.../IMGP07772.jpg radius-arm attached to router...screw small end to stock material leaving NO movement except to pivot in a circle... Cut out the lid ...you'll only need one ;) ... measure from edge of router-shoe to router-bit ... cut template outta masonite larger by that measurement ... sand SMOOTH edges of masonite ...clamp masonite to Starboard, and follow template w/ router ... http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y90.../IMGP07822.jpg Don't try to make it w/just one cut and don't push router too fast ...clear groove on each pass ... takes some time, but it'll make a nice top for your tank ;) 8) ... |
Re: Starboard question.............
Oh...on those radius arms...it'll work juss-as-mo-bedder to make one long one and add a pivot-screw hole shorter by the measure of the inside cut ... I guess I just LIKED cuttin' masonite ;) ::) ...
|
Re: Starboard question.............
Well there you go in a nut shell, anyone can do it!!
Yea right! ;) How did you attach te ring to the tank?? Did yours have a lip on it? |
Re: Starboard question.............
Quote:
That tank is actually two...one sleeved inside the other w/insulation material between walls...outter tank turns under the ring; it has T-Nuts in small blocks under the turn-in to catch each screw seen from the top...the inner tank goes straight up into a groove cut in the bottom side of the ring, sealed w/Aquarium sealer/adhesive ... if yours is single wall tank, the ring would go inside the top of the tank w/screws to hold in place ... that is unless ya wanna get fancier ;) 8) ...once you get the radius-arm made, it goes REEL easy ;) ... http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y90...Image003-1.jpg 4 "hanger-screws" go into the ring and thru the top to hold it on ... plastic wing-nuts for that ... |
Re: Starboard question.............
I cant believe REEL posted pics of the great looking tank. He just put my platform to shame. >:( :P
Thats a great job OZ. ;) |
Re: Starboard question.............
I will give you $20 to build me one!! And I expect free shipping also!!
|
Re: Starboard question.............

...and Hammer ... no shame on THAT platform ... I think ya did a GREAT job on it ... you did it just right; form follows function ;) ...works every time 8) ... |
