Installing NFB Steering Helm
Hey guys,
I'm to the point where I've removed the old hydraulic steering and have run the new steering cable through the gunwale. * As I was getting ready to install the bezel and the helm, I noticed that the existing hole from the previous helm is too big for the new one. *I have to make the hole smaller. *What should I do? *I know one option would be to glass in the hole with plywood, but would that be smart? *All of the stress from the new helm would be placed right within the patch area. *Should I consider glassing along with a piece of aluminum going across that whole face of that section where the steering wheel goes? * Here's the hole as it exists now: http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f3...g/100_1303.jpg |
Re: Installing NFB Steering Helm
Grace, Hmmm - thats a tough one. An easy solution hasnt come to me yet - maybe someone else will figure it out. The way I see it - you would have to pull the whole dash console off. I would make a round disc of wood that is a tight fit to the existing hole. Then I would securely attach that to a backer plate. Then, the backer plate could be securely fastened to the inside of the dash console. Lag screws, epoxy and glass, etc for the secure fastening. Good luck.

Re: Installing NFB Steering Helm
Can you just use a thick piece of starboard ???

Re: Installing NFB Steering Helm
Hammer has the answer

Re: Installing NFB Steering Helm
Thanks guys!!! Starboard it is--easy enough...
|
Re: Installing NFB Steering Helm
BGO, here's another possibily. Teleflex has excellent customer sercive. I'd bet if you call and ask that they have an adapter of some sort that will make your installation a bolt in. Probably even cheaper than Starboard and might look pretty slick.

Re: Installing NFB Steering Helm
If Teleflex doesn't come through, how about a nice piece of round teak bigger than the hole???
something like this; http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...sMako23006.jpg |
Re: Installing NFB Steering Helm
3/4 Starboard will be more then anough and will last 10 lifetimes!!
|
Re: Installing NFB Steering Helm

If you like the wood and the up keep, that is a great piece Tin!!
I hate the work of wood and have removed all! But I am jelious of the guys that have it cause it looks so good! |
Re: Installing NFB Steering Helm
That is one fine console!
Of course my wife tells me that all the time. ::) |
Re: Installing NFB Steering Helm
what size does the hole measure you have? i have alot of new brackets but need to know the current hole size i could weld you some longer ears on a kit so you wouldn't need to do any rigging.
|
Re: Installing NFB Steering Helm
also tell me the old mounting hole distances for the 4 holes i'll build you a mount bracket.
|
Re: Installing NFB Steering Helm
Here you go Skools:
http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f3...einconsole.jpg The measurement from hole to hole is not from center to center of the holes, but from the inner edge to the inner edge of the holes. *Let me know if you'd like me to remeasure from center to center. Also, a correction: the plywood is 5/8" not 3/4"... Thanks buddy! |
Re: Installing NFB Steering Helm
Yo Skool,
While your making stuff for Bygrace, make me a hard top brother. ;D ;D ;D |
Re: Installing NFB Steering Helm

Re: Installing NFB Steering Helm
skools ,gotta welding question for ya..my buddy has got a 92[?] 115 yammi, great motor except for a crack that has developed on the lower unit. Right where the front of the prop meets the lower unit, at about a 10:00 position, a crack started last year and now has moved at least an inch and1/4 foward. I think it's passing a little exhaust thru the crack because last time out on it I said it sounded different. Can something like that be welded or marine texed or JB 'd ?? Whattaya think???
|
Re: Installing NFB Steering Helm
you can stop the crack from moving anymore by drilling a hole in the end of the crack so it can't run any more. doesn't need to be very big just wider than the crack. then just fill with JB Weld you should be fine. That's an Old trick to do on circuit boards when they crack and it works well on metal too.

Re: Installing NFB Steering Helm
I'll pass that info along to him, thanks skools

You ain't kidding CB!
Skools has been a great friend. In fact, he's gone above and beyond anything I deserve. I've thanked him offlist, but I think it's worth saying publicly as well. Thanks buddy!!! |
Re: Installing NFB Steering Helm
Anytime Brother *8)
Now I only hope it fits and works. Hard to build stuff for projects 500 miles away lol. I built 2 steel bridges for my garden railroad at the beach here on just some measurements. They both fit perfect hope this does too. The bridges wouldn't have been to bad except they *both were 4 ft and 7.5 ft curved 1 on one end and 1 in the center. They are 200 miles away. |
Re: Installing NFB Steering Helm
hey BGA did it fit?
