Pulpit install / assembly...
I slipped away for an hour (lunch) and started on my pulpit today. I've got some minor issue to work through, but the beginning was easy enough. Measure ten times, drill one...you guys know the drill...
http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e4...install001.jpg I startd by marking the center line, locating the roller for proper end clearance, then marked my holes. I used a 1/8" bit for my pilot holes. After that, I flipped her over and cut a 1/2" recess with a 7/8" forstner bit so that I could recess the nuts on the underside... http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e4...install002.jpg Hey, I got mine on the boat before Hammer... http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e4...install003.jpg And here is my one problem to work through. Just left of the pulpit, by maybe 1/2", is my chain pipe... http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e4...install004.jpg I'm not sure what I'm gonna do. Maybe I move it, maybe I throw the pulpit on the table saw and rip 3/4" off each side? What should I do? More to follow... |
Re: Pulpit install / assembly...
Well, I guess I need to get moving on this project, cause until I finish I'm just gonna stare at my pictures. Somebody please tell me to do the right thing and relocate my chain pipe a little to the left.
I know its not the easy way, but it sure looks like the right way. I've also had this other thought...Taking the drill press and a 4" hole saw and cutting a recess into the side just enough to clear the chain pipe. If I took the 4" saw and notched the edge of the pulpit...... I don't know ??? |
Re: Pulpit install / assembly...
Take the cover from your pipe and put on the pulpit and draw it out, then use a hole saw to cut a Half moon on that side to fit the pulpit.

Re: Pulpit install / assembly...
My first thought was to notch it......that will look extra custom.
|
Re: Pulpit install / assembly...
I agree, notch the pulpit
|
Re: Pulpit install / assembly...
If the rope looks like it will be unimpeded by the notched pulpit I vote for notching it. If it looks like the will be a chance for it to bind when letting it out I'd take the time to move it either onto the rear of the pulpit or farther to port.

Re: Pulpit install / assembly...
What you guys have suggested was exactly what I had in mind. With the right (big) holesaw in a drill press I could make it look right nice. I took a dinner break, back at work now, and while on said dinner break...I got busy. I removed the cleat, nav light, and chain pipe.
I also took some pics sweety, er, Hammer ;D Here I have removed the deck pipe and the pipe that goes into the anchor locker. The previous owner did a noce job on the install. http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e4...install005.jpg Couple more shots of dis-assembly: http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e4...install006.jpg http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e4...install007.jpg Pulpit in position, note where the chain pipe will be: http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e4...install009.jpg And a different view: http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e4...install008.jpg Things are moving right along. Once I figure out how to do this chain pipe, it'll be full steam ahead. Everybody still agree with MJ's drawing? Thanks for reading... |
Re: Pulpit install / assembly...
you may find it difficult to cut out only half a circle w/ a hole saw.....have you got a rotozip or a jig saw....or access to a band saw?
|
Re: Pulpit install / assembly...
Phester, yes, yes, and yes. You think I'd have problems cutting half a circle in a drill press? You might be very correct. I dunno?
|
Re: Pulpit install / assembly...
Clamp a piece of wood on top, align the pilot bitof your hole saw to the edge of the pulpit and you should be good to drill press it! Billy Mac ;D
|
Re: Pulpit install / assembly...
How about clamping another piece of some thing along side the pulpit so your not trying to cut with just one side of the hole saw?
|
Re: Pulpit install / assembly...
You Air. great Pics. Brother. ;) Not sure what to do with the chain pipe. You could always order another small piece of starboard and raise teh pipe so its flush with the pulpit. If you go that route, it will give me more time to catch up to you. I attempted to work on mine today, but was held back by stupid little things. Like not having long enough arms to get the cleak off the bow. All I needed was someone to hold a dam screw driver while I was in the cuddy with a ratchit. And of course, I'm to damm stubborn to ask somebody for help on something so stupid. >:(
|
Re: Pulpit install / assembly...
Looking at it more, if I slid it forward 2", I could just lop the corner off? I have only test fit the 8lb danforth. I need to test the 13 and a wreck hook before I commit to the final position anyway. ;)
|
Re: Pulpit install / assembly...
Rick as long as the pulpit is clamped firmly in the drill press there should be no problem. Billy Mac ;D
|
Re: Pulpit install / assembly...
Do as Mac said, once you have the hole started it will go just fine!!
You don't want to go to far forward, it will be a lot of Leverage and not enough to ohld to the bow. |
Re: Pulpit install / assembly...
Hammer, I did mine alone ;) Of course I slid the hammer handle through the hole for the pipe, that held the vice grips still so that I could operate the screwdriver ;D
|
Re: Pulpit install / assembly...
AIRSLOT, stupid question. I noticed your chain hole covering faces towards you. Is that normal ??, figured you would have it facing the pulpit. Or is that just a demo shot to show the problem. Also, how is the PVC installed on the underside ?? I like it. ;)
|
Re: Pulpit install / assembly...
It was facing me when I was in the cuddy, and worked well that way. You have to feed the rode out, can't just let her fly :o
As for the PVC, it was 4200'd through the deck into the pipe and down below, it had a hose clamp above and below the liner...if that makes sense |
Re: Pulpit install / assembly...
SLOT...STOP!!... Hammer just touched on the solution to this...use a 1/4" piece of Starboard under all the pulpit...w/a strategicly placed "ear" that goes out the side to leave enough room to mount the pipe AND kill out the old hole...OR just use the ''ear'' only...flat edge tight against the side of the pulpit and large enough to mount the pipe and kill the hole...
|
Re: Pulpit install / assembly...
Thats a good Idea!! I covered a gas tank filler hole that was all messed up and then remounted it, looks great!
I have some 3/8 starboard which would be perfect, But its a off white? Looks white till you get it right up next to white white. Any way its yours if you want it, send me measurement I will send. |
Re: Pulpit install / assembly...
I have a good source of "scrap" starboard around the corner. I had thought of a "U" shaped piece and just moving the hole a bit. Maybe thats what I'll do.
Thanks, |
Re: Pulpit install / assembly...
Well, I have to get the pulpit done, have VIP's coming to fish Friday ;D So off to work on the boat for my "lunch" again. I didn't take alot of pics, but I got the important ones....
Here's the finished product ;D http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e4...stall001-1.jpg http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e4...stall002-1.jpg http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e4...stall003-1.jpg http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e4...stall004-1.jpg http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e4...stall005-1.jpg You can see the toothpicks that I used as spacers while the 5200 skins over. You can also se my 12 x 13 Aluminum back plate, thanks Hammer. You can also see the hole that I'll be covering when I reinstall my chain pipe ;) |
Re: Pulpit install / assembly...
Well, I know I said finished, but I've got a 10" cleat, anchor tensioner, and LED Nav lights to install yet.
|
Re: Pulpit install / assembly...
Air, how far of a overhang you have. Also, the bolts I picked up have the rounded top. Will that cause a problem you think when trying to tighten the bolts downs. What lenght bolts. I have 4" bolts. Thats all West Marine had in stock at the time. Guess you used 3" bolts ??
|
Re: Pulpit install / assembly...
Hey AIR, my little add on to my pulpit arrived today. You remember what it was. ;D
I'll snap a pic later of it. ;D |
Re: Pulpit install / assembly...
Hammer I used carriage bolts and had no problem!!
And I Just used some 3 x 3 backing plates, wow that thing is going no were with that plate!! Good work there !! |
Re: Pulpit install / assembly...
Yep, I remember. *I used 3" bolts, and they were cheaper at Ace Hardware. *As for overhang, I didn't really check for dimension. *It clears an 8lb Danforth by several inches and I hope it clear the 13. *To give you another idea, the rear-most bolts for the roller are about 1.5" from the bow.
Using this chart to judge: http://www.fishing-catalog.com/anchors/dan_standard.htm I figure I should be fine with any anchor I need. I know my wreck anchor will work as well. I wanted to keep the overhang as short as possible for leverage reasons. |
Re: Pulpit install / assembly...
Seen you didnt care to much about the carpet. Good, I dont plan on being that neat trying to cut out that ceiling carpet for the backing plate. ;D
|
Re: Pulpit install / assembly...
Oh, the carpet, what a disaster that was. *I thought I had made a nice neat cut...when I went to pull it out, its only tucked behind the liner. *I could have pulled it all out with very little effort...and I just may.
One other thing, there is a whole tube of 5200 under that rascal ;) *Between that and the 4 3/8" bolts, the boat will go down before the pulpit lets go :o |
Re: Pulpit install / assembly...
I have a fresh tube of 5200 as well. Just need to get out and get three more bolts off. Bought a bigger cleat today as well. ;)
|
Re: Pulpit install / assembly...
OK, time for another update and a fresh round of pics ;D
Here is the cleat. *For me, it has to go on the pulpit, as with the hatch open there is no more room: http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e4...stall003-2.jpg As for my mounting location, its fine. *I tried 3 different anchors and all clear the boat fine. *If there is a clearance problem, it will be the bow rail as the anchor self launches. *Here are a couple anchor pics. *8# danforth, 13# danforth, and my wreck anchor. http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e4...stall007-1.jpg http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e4...stall006-1.jpg http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e4...stall002-2.jpg http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e4...stall001-2.jpg http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e4...stall004-2.jpg http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e4...stall005-2.jpg If you look at the lenght of the three differnet anchors, it looks like I may not be able to use the tensioner that I have. I may have to go with a locking pin type. In a perfect world, the pulpit would be about 4" longer, but I'm very satisfied with the way things are going. |
Re: Pulpit install / assembly...
looking good buddy ;)
|
Re: Pulpit install / assembly...
Thanks CY.
Let me bounce an idea off you guys. How about if I mounted the tensioner on the center line all the way back, and a big ol cleat on each side, such as between my mounting bolts???????? I have to get a cleat on by morning so I can taker her feeshin ;) |
Re: Pulpit install / assembly...
Quote:
Sounds good to me, Slot...matter of fact, off-settin' just one cleat would do it for me...I wouldn't feel a need to have one on each side...assumin' yer right-handed, I'd put it on the right of the tensioner ;) ... ...and that may have been called a "Wreck Anchor" back in the old days...but today's modern mariner would refer to that as a "Norton-Snagger"...looks much like Franco's original 8) 8) ... |
Re: Pulpit install / assembly...
Gonna go grab a pick of the proposed setup, and a samich, and be back in a bit ;)
|
Re: Pulpit install / assembly...
Alright, here is the new proposed pulpit setup:
http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e4...install010.jpg So watcha think. *I'll probably put a cleat on each side, just for balance. *Had I known I was going this direction, I'd have used 8" cleats instead of 10". Also, after further consideration, I don't really like my chain tensioner. *Think I'm going to use one of these instead: http://images.westmarine.com/full/143961.jpg So, before I fire up the drill, any opinions? |
Re: Pulpit install / assembly...
Cleat side ways and wrapthe chain around once, it will never go any were and need no tenision or holder.
|
Re: Pulpit install / assembly...
For Pete's sake Slot you are worse than a woman! Make up your mind!
Just kiddin bud, looks nice. There is definitely Pulpit envy goin on right now in NC. On the V21 the hatch slides a good bit more forward so I'd have to "engineer" a solution much like member Seakindly did. In short it aint gonna happen cause I think it will look too gaudy anyway to build it up over the hatch. :-/ I'll focus on adding in my extra 20 gallon fuel tank for now. ;) |
Re: Pulpit install / assembly...
Thanks guys. I figure I get one shot to do it right. No do-overs when working with starboard. I don;t want to have the chain on the cleat, as the cleat will be used more often for lines. So unless I change my mind in the next 4 hours, it will be as pictured above.
Thanks, |
Re: Pulpit install / assembly...
Damm AIR, sorry to see our starboard being short on distance. I was thinking the same thing and thought about running cleats on either side for balence.
I wont have it done before the weekend. taking the V out for a photo shoot of my buddy power sailing Business on Sat. Maybe Monday I'll have ger done. Or work through the night tonoght with the spot light. 'NOT". Great pics. She's looking good, you will figure something out. ;) |
