Surprise Weakfish !!
Fellow Fisherman,
My brother, Kevin, and I did some Striper trolling last night and got the following surprise on a tube and worm rig. Never caught one my whole life. Here is Kevin with the fish. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...6/IMG_2340.jpg - Tom |

Beautiful fish ya got there! What is the red line? Is that the worm and tube jig? If so, that is huge.

Re: Surprise Weakfish !!
That is a T-man Scarlet Snake. I bought it yesterday after hearing about it at www.ctfisherman.com. Lots of useful fishing info for the CT area, including Long Island Sound. Here is a link to the tackle website.

Re: Surprise Weakfish !!
That's a biggun strip! Bet ya'll thought you had a striper for sure. Did you get any linesides or just the trout?
Nice! |
Re: Surprise Weakfish !!
Thats a nice one!!! ;D
How much might he weigh? |
Re: Surprise Weakfish !!
I saw a 31" online that was 10lbs. This one looks no less than that. I'm gonna guess around 12lbs.

Re: Surprise Weakfish !!
Tell us about the fight if there was one. I take it that it is not too common of a fish. Nice Catch! Bill Mc ;D

Re: Surprise Weakfish !!
This Weak fought, according to my brother, like a trout. He ran deep and off to the side, we thought he was a striper for certain. When it came up you could see its bronze colors and wow he was pretty. The fish grunted when we got him onboard like crazy, deep, gutteral sounds that actually vibrated the deck.
The Weaks are a rarity, they exist and some guys target them but I have never caught one before. The fish weighed a bit over 9 lbs on the boga grip. My brother said it was the best fish he ever ate from the sound. We did tag one Striper that night on a chunk of bunker, a smaller fish at about 27 inches or so. Great night all around. |
Re: Surprise Weakfish !!
strip, once had a similar surprise. Early fall, drifting eels out of the fire island inlet, my favorite rip on the south shore. Felt my eel gettin' real nervous.Reel started run,set the hook, thought it was a 30-32" striper. Got him close to the boat and got a quick glimps and knew it was no bass. Got him in the net and on board. 321/2 " and 9.8 lbs. first week I ever got. Next drift I got hit hard, bought a 42" striper on board w/ the same eel I got the weakfish on.

Re: Surprise Weakfish !!
Strip, what does "tagging" striper mean? Are you literally applying a tag for some scientific reason? I just let all mine go after I tell them "thanks." Blues are nice and thick now!

Re: Surprise Weakfish !!
My bad CTV20.... "tagged" simply meant caught. I hope to get back out on Thurs.
I think I am becoming a gamefish snob.... The blues are back in such numbers that I blow right by the schools a lot of times to get to my striper spots. ( once I have my fill of bait of course ) . - Tom |
Re: Surprise Weakfish !!
Strip, do you use the small blues for striper bait? Just curious.
|
Re: Surprise Weakfish !!
We use Menhaden or "bunker" either live ( very good bait ) or chunked for stripers. I also "tube and worm" for them quite a bit. The tube is an unbelievable way to catch the stripers very easily. I can almost guarantee a Striper when tubing. I am very curious what the tubes might catch down south a bit.

Re: Surprise Weakfish !!
All the above is what I like about saltwater fishin'...you NEVER know WHAT you got til it's in the boat... :o... 8)...

Re: Surprise Weakfish !!
I hear you on the Blues, it does feel good to be able to leave or pass a spot filled with fish and not feel like you're missing anything. We are blessed.
