New recessed rod box options...

:DI found some new rod boxes yesterday. As soon as I order mine on Monday I'll find a link to post. They had 3 different sizes. The ones I'm ordering are about 49" x 18.5". The cutout in my V-20 is 48 x 15.5. I've already looked to make certain they'll fit and they will. THese boxes will hold three rods apeice as opposed to two in the old ones that are badly broken. Best part is they are only $95.

Airslot, I'll look foward to that link. Right now my rod holders hold a boat hook and a swab on one side and a gaff and a yard stick on the other. I have owned the boat for 4 years and I dont think I ever tried to put rods in the rod box, but Tuesday when I fish again I just might try it. Capt K

Re: New recessed rod box options...

Good news / Bad news. As I was leaving for work this morning I double checked the clearance for those 181/2" 3 rod boxes. They would fit but won't clear the rod holder. They have 2 rod boxes that are 15 7/8" x 54"l. They will fit. I'm wondering if I could somehow modify these bigger boxes to fit around the rodholder? Anywhooo, check out...

They seem to have lots of neat stuff.

I took your advice and ordered the three rod panel inserts for my 85 v-20 steplift and they fit perfectly. They have been hard to come by (been looking for almost two years). Now the restoration is complete. Thank You!!! Pics coming soon.

Airslot,

I had to trim less than an inch from the original cutouts on the top side and nothing else. It couldn't have been any easier. I had a talk with the owner of Flounder Pounder Marine and we came up with a set he had that fit almost perfectly. Let me know how yours turn out.

OK, I just ordered mine today. Turns out that the boxes I mentioned in my first post are the right ones. The dimensions that I had were for the outer mounting lip, not the inside. Should have mione on Friday if UPS can get them out of Florida. The are in Canaveral about 40 minutes from Orlando and had virtually no damage. Said they were very lucky. 'll try to get some pics over the weekend.

Found excellent rack inserts from SSI in Maryland when I restored my 85 steplift. Very little cutting required.
Worked out great.

Who did you order the rod holders from? Have you ever been able to locate doors for the hatches for the two compartments located near the transom?

Airslot 12-28-2009 08:51 AM

The inserts came from FPmarine.com. Probably still have some.

I have one hatch lid in storage that is a spare. I'd be willing to part with it.

That hatch lid is getting alot of mileage...assuming its the one I got for you from the guy here that wrecked his boat?

Hi,
I decided to redo all of the teak on my V. I am not quite finished, but close. Redoing the rod boxes was a fairly time consuming project because the original fiberglass box on the starboard side was cracked and a piece on the bottom of the box was completely broken out. The way I repaired it was to reinforce the back side of the box with 6 OZ fiberglass cloth and epoxy resin and I filled with thickened epoxy. I reinforced both boxes. After getting everything smooth, I primed the boxes and spray painted them with Interlux Brightsides urethane paint. The color is off-white and it really matches the boat's gelcoat well. I used the rodboxes this year and they are ok. Sometimes line and weights on the rods get caught under the gunnels which I intend to fix by mounting 4" rod tubes forward of the boxes to keep from snagging.

I am also showing my refinished teak cabin door which had to be taken apart because of joint failure, cleaned and re-glued. I used Titebond 3 to do the reglue. Finish on all of my teak is Sikkens Cetol Natural Teak. I refinished the cabin door 2 years ago and it is holding up very well. This past season, my boat spent the time uncovered exposed in the elements in Cape May County NJ.

Thanks I'll give them a try.

sweet life 12-28-2009 02:00 PM

Thanks. I'll try FP Marine. I'm just getting use to the interface here so not sure how the reply works but hopefully this comes through to you. Those rod holders look awesome. Regarding the hatch cover let me know what you want for it.

sweet life 12-28-2009 02:10 PM

The boat looks great with all the teak redone & the rod holders are real nice with the plastic shell & wooden brackets. Were the wooden brackets stock or added by you? Also, did you paint the floor?

Geekie1 12-28-2009 02:45 PM

The teak rod holders mounted in the rod boxes are stock 1984 Wellcraft. The floor will be repainted this spring with non-skid paint or some other marine floor paint. Some of the V20 guys at this site have used other specialty marine floor finishes that are like spray in truck bed liners. I don't remember the names of the products, but I am sure someone will mention the product names.
