help with v20
hi all new member been shopping for 6 months for right v20 looked at one today, all the way up in lake george. was on ebay i made offer. top dollar for boat but set up the way i wanted, 1989 , 1993 225 evinrude. on older style armstrong bracket. transom looked good and solid, floor on port side had a little flex( creaking ) but did not feel soft. i walked away from it with a heavy heart because it had a strange veiny looking cracking in the gell coat all over bottom of hull and especially one side of transom. have any of you seen this ?

Re: help with v20
Mine is a 1990 and we just waxed the bottom. *There were no cracks. *When you pushed up on this veining area was there any flex, I'm thinking it possibly hit something. *Welcome Bill Mc ;D

Re: help with v20
hi mac attack, no this wasn't any type of collision or abrasion like damage. it looked like egg shell type cracking of just the gell coat and it was stained inkish colored from the fresh water it was in. looked like veins in your arms and was scattered generally around hull below water line and transom, being below water line is what got me nervous. no blistering on boat at all
|
Re: help with v20
well either everyone is too busy fishin, can't blame ya , or no one has seen this on their boats.
|
Re: help with v20
Hey Willy...you're right to be concerned re that type cracking...unless you're ready to pay a large repair bill or a REAL do-it-yourselfer...most likely that viening is only in the gel coat as long as it feels solid right along the cracks...but even gel coat repair of that size is gonna be HIGH!...
Keep lookin'...you'll find one in better shape and go for it!!...there have been some REALLY NICE boats recently, like the one Blue Runner got... ;) ;D... |

Re: help with v20
thanks reelapeelin, it was hard walkin away from that setup. it's the one that was on ebay someone had posted about. drove four hrs. to see it. nice fellow took good care of boat. but i never saw gel coat look like that before. guy said it was there for years. looked like algae would stick just inside fine cracks. some of it you could rub mostly away. but it was all from water line down all under boat and back of transom . this looking is getting time consuming and still no boat. my blue veined woman is looking askew at me. anyone seen another v20 0r 21 decent close to jersey, my gas bill is getting high

Re: help with v20
hey franco you still got yours for sale ?

Re: help with v20
Fine spider webbing in the gel is no big deal. As it ages it becomes more brittle, and when the hull flexes it spiders. The odd thing is that it was on the hull bottom and transom, rather then on the hull sides and gunnels where you usually find it.
BTW - I am not a big fan of fresh water boats! Fresh water rots wood stringers and decks faster then salt water. It is better for the engine though. |
Re: help with v20
hello fillet, thats what i thought, i've seen it in other spots but this wrapped around where sides meet bottom, along a bunch of edges and chines. along bottom of hull and port side of transom. pretty much whole bottom had it some areas worse than others
|
Re: help with v20
what do you mean about the fresh water boats, i've always heard it was the type of boat to look for as salt water is much more corrosive of all the systems in boats. fill me in

Re: help with v20
I have a 13 ft whaler that had the gel-coat do that. I cleaned it and painted over it with awl-grip. worked well, but it is a scallop, fish, stone crab, kids boat. so i wasn't to worried about looks. This boat was alsoa fresh water boat.

Re: help with v20
hi phat daddy, if i was paying 5g's for boat i would have probably left with it and hoped for the best but this fellow was rock solid nothing less than 10g's and i can buy a lot newer or better shape boat for that much based on what i seen.

Re: help with v20
10 Gs... :o...he ain't really ready to sell that boat yet, however he can tell his wife that it's "for sale"..."Honey, I've been TRYIN' to sell that boat..." ::)
Willy, you did good to walk...IMHO... ;) |
Re: help with v20
oh he's ready to sell, has new boat delivered yesterday. but firm thinks boat worth that and more. i wish him all the best. only other problem i found on boat was where two bolts for the bracket platform, not the bracket holes themselves, were leaking water ithru transom each time it rocked below water line. no way for me to check transom in that area without moisture meter
|
Re: help with v20
I wish him the best, too, but unless doofus walks up w/ more $$ than brains, especially w/ a transom leakin' water into the wood core, that'll be the ONLY guy he's ready for... ::)...

Re: help with v20
Sorry Willy, I didn't see your post. Yes I do still have mine for sale as a matter of fact. Was doing some finishing touchs on it today. Got to finish painting the deck and bolting on the hardware then it goes in the paper I guess. It's a sweet deal for someone looking for one with all the hard work done. Let me know if you know someone that is interested
