Enough Motor

I noticed that a lot of mid 80;s v20's had the stock motor being a 4cyl yammy 115. You guys that had them could you tell me was that enough motor for all around pleasure and fishing use. Reliable? It seemed to me to be a little underpowered for that hull but it was the common power plant in this area anyhow

Re: Enough Motor

IMO its underpowered for sure. I think on a v20 a 140 is a must with a 150 being the preferable minimum. if you will just cruise slowly and in calm water ALL the time...a 115 might be ok, but I want the capability to get in and out in rough conditions. 8)

I am going to go with a 175-225 on mine. ;D

aqaurius told me a couple of weeks ago that v20 he's selling has a merc 200 on it and that it sits low in the stern. that the scupper (floor) drain holes are actually below water line. is that hwo all v20's with 200 and up motors sit ???

my scuppers were about 2 inches above water level with a single 225 Johnson. But i have put a 25" transom in the boat in place of the old 20 incher.

I have an old 76' V-20 cuddy with an older 2 stroke,V-4, 140 hp Evinrude and I think it performs great. With that said, I'm still running the 40 gals of fuel in my saddle tanks.

When I went up to a 200 the stern did drop some. My scuppers at deck level are above the waterline, but not by much.

If I do go from the Honda 150 to a 200 E-Tec, I'm gonna LOSE about 43 pounds...can't get it off my mind ::)...

Re: Enough Motor

How high your scuppers end up depends some on the age of your boat. My '88 model has the floor raised 2" higher than my sister's '86 model. If your floor in the cockpit is even with the floor in the cuddy you have the raised floor.

We both have Yamaha V-6's. Hers is a 150 and mine is a 200 but they weigh the same. Her boat is definately more likely to take water in the suppers than mine is.

How much power you need depends some on how you set up the boat. Her boat actually has a better hole shot with the 150 than mine has with the 200. That is because she runs a 17" prop and and run a 18". The motors have the same low end power. Mine just has bigger carbs for a stronger top end. If I dropped to a 17" my moter would be prone to overrevving and I would not get the benefit of the extra 50 horsepower. I still turn 5300 revs at full throttle unloaded. I mostly use my boat for family skiing so I do run a low pitch for a good takeoff with 6 or more people in the boat.

Re: Enough Motor

If that is not enough one brother has a Wellcraft Airslot 18' and my other brother has a 22 Anacapri that is so much like the V-20 most people don't notice the difference. The Anacapri was purchased new in '68 by our father. The first time we saw a V-20 we thought it was an Anacapri. Anacapri was a small boat builder in Miami beach that built 100 boats a year. I don't know if they are still in business.

As you can tell, we know what we like when we see it and then stick with it. Even though my boat is 17 years old I have not seen another boat I would take in its place.
