Picture of Real Pirates
You probably heard about that cruise ship that was attacked off the coast of Somalia by pirates recently. One of the passengers on the ship took a picture while they were firing rocket propelled grenades and machine guns at the ship. The ship used an LRAD - long range acoustic device that emits earsplitting noise in a specific direction to thwart the attack and prevent the pirates from boarding. By the way, there were two boats, this is just one of them:

Re: Picture of Real Pirates
That LRAD was developed after years of studying the effectiveness of the W.I.F.E system. Highly irratating and men flee at the sound 8)

Re: Picture of Real Pirates
LOL! Goood un! Also, forgot to mention, the passengers said the pirates were smiling at them while they shot at them :o
|
Re: Picture of Real Pirates
Those pirates look like they mean business! just look at the guy 2nd from left! He's relaxing against the gunwale. What a bunch of losers. PS since when have cruise ships had this technology, and where can I buy it?
|
Re: Picture of Real Pirates
Eric, yeah I noticed that guy "relaxing". Losers in the biggest sense of the word!
The article said the technology was developed by the military for use on large aircraft carriers and such to keep the enemy from coming aboard using small boats and such. I'd say it saved several lives that day! Its a good thing the ship had it, or no telling what might have happened! |
Re: Picture of Real Pirates
I can't say I blame him, I bet it's tough being a pirate. That boat doesn't look like it's very comfortable either. And holding a twisty stick must get tiring. Even pirates need their rest!
|
Re: Picture of Real Pirates
Plus they were over a hundred miles offshore! Must've been high on diesel fumes :D ;D
Makes me think about those funny Capital One commercials with the vikings being forced into regular jobs since there's no one left to pillage ;D Guess those guys are gonna have to find real jobs too! |
Re: Picture of Real Pirates
I want one of those LRADs to shoo away the friggin' blowboaters that seem to always cut right through a mess of boats fishing instead of going the F around. >:(

Re: Picture of Real Pirates
Wonder what kind of boat that is. I bet their slogan is

Re: Picture of Real Pirates
That is a panga boat. It is king of narrow but they say it is a good rough water boat.

Re: Picture of Real Pirates
I can see why you say that is a Panga but I don't think Panga makes a boat larger than 22'. The boat they are in is at least 25'. Someone on another board said it was definitely a Privateer. But, who knows.

I used to do a lot of drug interdiction in the Carib. when I was in tha Army, that hull design in a very common one with the Columbians, they some of them even have manufacturer data plates that give all the info and give Medellin as a place of manufactuer (home of the drug cartell) other places that I have been in the Med and the Pacific coast of Panama they are very common boats. Seems to be a favorite for low income fisherman, drug smugglers and Costa Rican guides ;D |
Re: Picture of Real Pirates
Panga is a generic term used for that style boat...someone came along and decided to use ''Panga" as a brand name... :)...for the picture above the cut line should read; ''Panga...the choice of morons''... ;D...
|
Re: Picture of Real Pirates
I really wish they would'a showed the rear end of that boat. In the news they're callin em "high speed boats". I'm so darn curious whether they have outboards or what?!? ???
|
Re: Picture of Real Pirates
BR, every Panga (generic or brand name) I've seen pictured has been outboard powered w/a tiller handle...how big an OB can ya get w/tiller steering?...WOW, just answered my own question...2006 E-Tec is offered w/tiller up to 115 HP (maybe 130 depending on this chart...it's kinda unclear), but either way, that'd push a Panga along pretty good, even loaded w/morons and their weapons...
Pangas are long; 25' and more, but narrow so real efficient... |
Re: Picture of Real Pirates
"efficient" yeah, that's what they need. Less gas means more room for ammo!
|
Re: Picture of Real Pirates
Wish that Cruise Ship had been successful when the Capt tried to run over one of the Pangas...woulda left a nice CHUM slick!!... ;D...
|
Re: Picture of Real Pirates
I have personally seen a 150 hp tiller outboard. Been a while and I forgot what it was on. I think it was a Yammie.

Re: Picture of Real Pirates
Check out this post, this guy has a 28' panga -
I think this is CaptBents uncle's website |
Re: Picture of Real Pirates
Try panga.com...32'er w/twin 200 E-Tecs; rated for 600 HP... :o...probably OUTRUN an RPG... ;)...
