Need some advise

Well , I got caught with my pants down, figuratively speaking. Unlike Steplift who is obviously more organized than I my V20 got caught in a snow storm with another coming tonight. Due to work and other commitments I never got out and fished Raritan Bay like I planned and now I have not winterized the motor. Can I run the motor ( Evinrude ) long enough without a hose hook up to inject the fogging oil in the system or should I wait for the next thaw and open up the pipes and run a hose. Its a bit from the house. Any ideas appreciated

No you can not run the motor for 1 second without water!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It can wait for a above freezing day no problem. I hasve even gone and removed the spark plugs filled with mystery oil and then just tyurned the motor over with out starting befpre.

Foging the motor has nothing to do with the cold!! It is just to oil thre internal motor parts so they don't rust up from sitting around for a long period.

Also don't forget the lower unit! That will be junk if you wait till spring and it got water in it over the summer.

So no worry!! You have time! ;)

MJ my Rude has an injector set up to spray direct from the can into the carbs, can I do this without letting the engine start and will that circulate it thru if I just keep turning it over or does it have to be actually running, and thanks for the reminder but I know about the lower unit.

Re: Need some advise

get a bottle of Mystery Oil and squrit it inn there, if you want to do it now.

But like I said you have time to wait if you want to.

I never use fogging oil, I just use Mystery Oil in a squrit bottle all the time.

hey Willy i personally don't fog mine every year it's not going to hurt it to not be fogged. OMC is one of the few outboards that will fully drain when in the down position. You can run it on a hose one warmer day early and it will drain all out by night. But as MJ said DO NOT run without water. Yamaha's are the only other outboard that will fully drain the water cavities. Others better either blow air threw or run antifreeze in them.

Willy, motor HAS to be runnin' for spray to get into cylinders where it does any good...even w/the nozzle you're talkin' about on the side of the carbs...but no need for concern; a few freezin' nights won't hurt anything...

Skools...how are Honda 150s at drainin'?...

Re: Need some advise

they drain fair but hold water in the bottom of the block in 2 cavities, shouldn't hurt as long as it is left down. Where you are it shouldn't hurt anything. Up north it might. Hope everyone has cleaned out there holding tanks for bait. The live well and bilge lines need to be blown out too.

Re: Need some advise

If you remove plugs and spray Marvel or fogging oil into cylinders and turn engine over w/o starting does that help or not.

Skools Out 12-06-2005 12:17 PM

Re: Need some advise

yeah that will keep the cylinders from getting any surface rust. Marvel would be best. They make it in a spray can type that foams it's really good stuff.

Re: Need some advise

willy i wouldnt *worry about fogging the motor so much because when it is running it is mixed with oil anyway
what i am concerned about is the fuel system, you have to put stabilizer in the tank and run the motor so the stabilizer has a chance to go thru the system and in the carbs
so on the nezt decent day do that
ad stabilizer to the tank
fun the motor for about 10 minutes
diconect the fuel line and then fog it until the *motor runs dry * i have a lawnmower that wasnt started for 3 years with the same gas and it started and ran fine *so go figure
i think its a way to ake more money for the companys but i have been doing it the same way for 15 years with no problem and am not going to change now
but i know people that dont do a thing and they have no problems either

Re: Need some advise

no no no no don't run an OMC dry they are subject to burn a piston. :o :o what brand oil do you run in the premix? some have stabilizer in them already.
