Any Running a Jack Plate Here?
Hello I have a 74 V-20 CC we bought last year with out a motor , the boat is in nice shape with a new tramson redone by a local marina 2 years ago. The local marina called the other day and one of the customers wanted to trade in a 83 Merc Black Max 150 for a new motor well to make the story short I grew up with the salesman and he had the motor checked out it was fine tons of new parts including a new lower unit 2 years ago rebuilt carbs last year and water pump, new starter I ended up matching what the dealer offered 700.00 and I bought it. The compression warm was 117-120 psi across all 6 cylinders and it fired up cold on 2 cranks. Here's the problem the motor is a 25 inch I need a 20 inch shaft the dealer said to just use a jackplate it would save a lot of money . Has anybody here ever use one. I like to hear about it ......Ted

Re: Any Running a Jack Plate Here?
Hey Blu...welcome to the board...we just had a Mako here the other day that was fitted w/a long-shaft motor on a jack-plate...looked like a great idea to me...the comment was made that you'd have to have a good, solid transom to make that work and sounds like you have that...I'd say go for it... ;) ;D...take pictures of the project and post them here...would be interesting...

Re: Any Running a Jack Plate Here?
Thanks, I can't wait for it gets a little warmer{it's 18f today} so we can start working on it. It's a nice step up from the old Starcraft 18 ft tri-hull to this. We were stuck fisking the bays here for fluke and porgies . Now we can get out in to Long Island Sound and the race. This fall I be out salmon fishing at Lake Ontario .....I'll get a picture of the boat posted soon.....

Re: Any Running a Jack Plate Here?
Blue - I've never run one, but I know that is a common fix for people in your situation. I'm headed out wednesday to pickup an older blackmax on craigslist . . . it's got a 20" shaft and I need a 25" :) I'll let you know what kind of shape it's in . . .
BTW - I love blackmax motors!! |

Re: Any Running a Jack Plate Here?
Jack Plate shoukld be fine for what you want!!
Do I smell a trade on motors coming?? |
Re: Any Running a Jack Plate Here?
The lower units are interchangable on all blackmax motors. There were a few different gear ratios offered depending on the model.
1.87:1, 2:1. 1.78:1, etc. There are a few other parts that you need to swap aswell. I think shipping is about $60, but you could always have them put in a 20" shaft too . . . that shouldn't cost too much. |
Re: Any Running a Jack Plate Here?
Hey Blu, I fish the same waters, great area! I live on the North Fork of L.I..

Re: Any Running a Jack Plate Here?
Thanks guys. I picked up the motor yesterday. Next question, the motor came of a 19 foot Boston Whaler CC I was given 2 props with it, 17 pitch alunimium and a 19 pitch stainless steel prop, I have a feeling it's too much pitch for the boat , what are the 150 guys running. I took a few pictures of the motor before I took it from the other boat, I'll post a few tommorrow night. I guy I got it from bought a large 4 stroke Yammy I have close to 2500. in reciepts for work and parts on the Merc, it's clean......

Re: Any Running a Jack Plate Here?
most guys w/ a 150 [myself included] run a 17" pitch.See what you tach out at, mercs run a little higher RPMs than average,I think you should be about 5800 WOT

Re: Any Running a Jack Plate Here?
$700.00 for that motor???? Man, if that runs as good as it looks, you scored nicley. Good luck w/ it! It's gonna be just right on your boat.

Re: Any Running a Jack Plate Here?
BLu - I just picked up the 1979 Mercury V200 today. It's been sitting in garage for the last 15 years . . . the thing looks brand new!!! Lower Unit is 20" has the typical paint skuffs. Let me know if you're interested in a swap? FYI - other parts that need to be swapped when you change from the 20 to 25" shaft are
shift shaft mounting studs water tube I'll post some detailed photos. Honestly I think the jack plate is your best option . . . I'm going to replace the shaft anyway with a 25" and I can send you the 20" shaft, shiftshaft, mounting studs, and water tube. |
Re: Any Running a Jack Plate Here?
Blu, WOT @ 6 grand I'm toppin' out at about 42 mph on gps...that's trimmed all the way and light load...criusin' @ 4400 rpms gets me around 32 mph...I'm a happy cappy... 8)...
|
Re: Any Running a Jack Plate Here?
I think I mirror Rap's #'s. I cruise 26-27 knots @7gph and WOT is about 39 knots.
When you convert to mph are numbers are similar. Airslot |

O I have 175 Yamaha I tool around at 30 or so depending on the3 water and top out at near 40, I run a big prop to haul all my fish ;D so it slows me down a bit. 15 1/4 X 15 |
Re: Any Running a Jack Plate Here?
The last op I was done in May2003 I didn't returned to work til January 04 it was at least 3 months doing nothing. Are having done open or thru the little slits? If you are having done thru the little slit it's not to bad ...open I had a 10 inch incision the first time and I was out of work for 1 1/2 years *I was so bad from a accident at work they had to cut everything and rotate my arm around 25 degrees *and put it back together...Good luck

Re: Any Running a Jack Plate Here?
Yeah the things Drs can do these days...like my cousin, went in to have his heems removed, they got carried away and switched his mouth for his poop-chute...now he sits on his dinner-plate to eat and head in the crapper to poop...he's learned to live w/it after the settlement and all, but his breath will knock a bugger off a gut-bucket... ::)...
