Live Well Question Also
Just read the post on round live well. I have an 84 V-20 Cuddy with a rectangular well in the center just aft of the Captain Seats. I have been using it as additional storage for lines, anchors, etc. There is a pump in the bottom beside the drain hole. Do any of you guys have the same setup, and if so, how do you use it as a live well... where is the water source, or do you simply fill it with water by bucket and use the pump to change it? Any info would be a help.
Thanks, Ken Clelland aka: Lead Head |
Re: Live Well Question Also
I have a 1990 V20. My live well is located in the floor between the seats. There is no pump for bringing water in or out. I use a bucket to fill and drain to the bilge. I too would like to hear of the other set ups. Bill Mc ;D

Re: Live Well Question Also
Well I use to have a 1/2 barrel home made one, but it was to big and It was in the way all the time.
Then here in Mass, we now have a 3 year close to all Herring!! So no more live lining them. Now I fish live Scup, I made a nice small 20 gal live well, it goes in the old engine well under the I/O cover. Its there when ever I need it and not in the way at all when I no use it. Dark out now, but I will take a pic tomorrow and post. Nothing special, home made. but it will keep a dozen Scup alive for a long time! and when they are gone or dead I can just go 1/2 mile and get some fresh ones to put in the tank! Works for me ;D |

Re: Live Well Question Also
lead head, got the same set up on my 83. I used it for storage or a fish box when we actually catch fish. The pump is for pumping all of the slime water out. I took an old styrafoam cooler about 1 " thick and cut it up and siliconed the pieces to the inside and it holds ice real well. Just don't put any foam on the bottom.

Re: Live Well Question Also
Lead Head, I keep an extra pump w/ about 6' hose on it in the boat for pump-outs...that way, I can get it goin' and go on down the lake, but I'll tell ya, most of the time I do use a bucket...easier and quicker than pump...the pump in your well...is there a hose?...where does hose go?...
You can get as fancy plumbin' a bait-well as you wanna...I'd keep it simple and only aerate/circulate as needed by the particular bait you need to keep alive... ;)... |

Re: Live Well Question Also
Install raw water washdown and never use a bucket to fill your livewell again *;)
On my V-21 the built-in live-well has a pump as well and aerators on each side. If I had to guess*Well the pump went bad about 30 seconds after I bought the boat (exageration) and now I use the raw water washdown to fill the tank. *Once full and bait is in there I hit the aerators and leave them on the whole time. *This supplies the oxygen and all you have to really do is make sure the water stays cool. * I throw ice in there and/or drain and refill after a while. *It works out really good. *I kept pogies (small menhaden) alive for hours on end this past weekend. *Even had one about 7 or 8 inches long survive for a long time too. At one point I had about 3 dozen finger mullet, 3 dozen pogies, half-dozen baby spots, 3 greenbacks, and a glass minnow - all happy ;D. I really like those little aerators and never would have thought they would matter that much until I tried them. *The bait stays really frisky! *Hmmm, maybe MJ has an aerator on his PC?!? :o *That would explain things! |
Re: Live Well Question Also
I have a 750 GPH bildge pump in it, takes water from bottom and pumps water to the top and out a 3/4 inch pvc pipe with holes in it.
it will keep pogies or scup, herrin for hours! Runs on my jump starter all day! I change water a few times depending how long I use it? I am installing a raw water wash down next week for filling and stuff. And mine is small with handles easy to pick up 20 gal and dump ;D |
