Splash Down

Well Boys Willy is up and running. Finally ;D
Took Old School out of Atlantic Highlands yesterday, pretty day, winds kicked up hard in afternoon at tide change as usual. Went out for Flounder, no Flounder, guys said been very few all week. Picked up a couple of racer Blue's fishing for Stripers. Big Stripes are not in yet, another week or two.
The GOOD news, lowering the engine 2 3/4 " made all the difference, can trim up engine in a good chop now w/o any ventilating of the prop. Seems like another 1.5 " would have been perfect but can't get any more.
Went out with an old timer here and he said he had not been on a V20 for over 20 years and now remembers why he likes them so much, he could not believe the ride and how dry it was even in the strong afternoon winds and waves.
Even though another 1.5 " would probably be perfect measurement wise I don't think it would be engine dunking wise. I only have a 115 and it rides plenty close enough as it is. A couple more inches and it will get splashed a lot. I'm putting the kicker bracket and motor on this week and that adds another 100 lbs. to the back and my friend says it will lower the motor a little there.
He says the V's always rode bow heavy and tended to stuff the bow in rough seas but that weight up front is what lets me ride thru the chop so smooth. I do notice at rest that my boat at least, sits almost perfectly level, almost slightly bow low, he said having that bow pulpit and heavy anchor sticking out front also adds a little forward tilt, especially since I have the V4 engine in back instead of the heavier V6's to counter balance it.
Anyhow she's in and riding nice, engine ticking away sweet electronics all up and running and Willy is smiling ;D
Oh and with full tank, two guys and coolers and enclosure up in a medium chop I maxed out at 5300 rpm and 34 mph on my fancy shmancy new GPS, someone had asked before.

Re: Splash Down

Oh yeah I forgot all about that Skools ::)
Do ya think it might actually happen, cause that would be great if it did :) And what do ya think about the V's being a little bow heavy, is your like that with the bigger engine on it

Re: Splash Down

Way to go! Have a great season! 34mph ain't bad at all :) must be fairly economical with that 4 banger too.

Went out with phester last week and my starter crapped the bed....almost got stranded. Just got one delivered today for $129, put it in....back in business!

Took the tin boat out yesterday and got my first Striper of the year....only 23"...big ones will be here anytime now :)

Re: Splash Down

didn't get the V out yet, managed one trip on the aluminium....had the carb. on that rebuilt on that too [after doing 6 on the 150, it was a piece of cake] oh yeah, managed 2 small stripers,16"-19",I'm right behind ya Willy....my splash date should be next week for sure.

Re: Splash Down

It's all coming together ;) the big stripes are expected to start rolling in enmass within the next two weeks, they have been hitting them sporadically up and down the Jersey shore, occasional cow in the bunch. No bait fish yet and no birds working at all. I was surprised the Flounder moved out so quick, they were in the river mouths a week ago and this time last year we were packing coolers. :-/
But the trip was more of a shakedown for the V anyhow and that went sweet.
Lets go Franco I'm ready for ya Bud ;)

Re: Splash Down

Phester if you and Tin want to head down to Raritan Bay in a couple weeks when the Stripes float in we can go out on Old School and catch us a few, love to have you guys down this way, would be a good day. Let me know if both or either of you guys want to hook up ;)And any of you other guys going to be up this way let me know, we'll do some fishing

Good to hear, willy. 8)

We have your stripers still. They're still getting their freak on, then they'll be up in your neck of the woods soon enough.

Re: Splash Down

I've had two V-20's and I don't think they are bow heavy but I am not an expert. I saw one at the ramp this morning with a huge 4 cycle 225 on it and it was very *** heavy for sure. Two guys and a dog and they had plugs in the cockpit outside drains and the splash well had about an inch of water at idle..That would make me very nervous especially in a wet slip..Frank

willy 04-29-2006 12:44 PM

Re: Splash Down

All Right Ches have fun with them but give them the boot soon will ya, and SFP I have seen some V's like that for sure and you are right about being concerned. mine is just about "bubble" level literally, but they are definetly a bow heavy boat, made that way, at least the cuddy version
