Wild Ride Today

Well guys, I said screw the overtime, the bills can wait, so off we went out into the sweat blue yonder. NOT !!.
North East Winds blowing today, as I was hooking up the trailer, I noticed the wind start picking up, but still went for it. The canal going out was flat, but as soon as I reached teh inlet, it turned nasty. I figured if I can just make it out of the inlet and just go with the flow, everything would be fine. Sorry, MULV. I wanted to snap those photo's of the Hay Stacks for ya, but I was up against some large swells. I swear I hit some 6 ft swells sideways out there. Wanted Lisa to snap some photos. but she was holding on to our dog that we decided to take out for the first time.
Been out in th ebig dive boats and been hit with 11ft waves diving the Patty's Pitcher Wreck. Never had no fears in those big boats, but being out there in the V-20 wasnt the right choice. The boat did her job, but it was tuff coming hit and getting slammed sideways with the waves. Wasnt sure to go slow or tilt the motor up and go fast. I tilted the motor up just slightly to try and get over the waves and not dip into them.
We made it back in to the inlet "Wet" wishing I had curtains !!!, but I guess with wet curtains, it makes it worse to see where your going. We finally anchored inside the Lewes canal and watched some fire works. Hmm, I found that I have a whimpy anchor that kept causing me to drift. I actually drifted over a damm steel rod that some smuck must have used as a mooring spot. Scrathed the bottom paint, but caused no damaged. Hit a few more problems when leaving.

1. Motor wouldnt start, the ball was soft and wouldnt get hard. After about five minutes she started. First time it ever did this.
2. At 1500 rpms, I'm going 6 knots, motor putters and shakes at this slow speed. Worried now as with MJ and his shaking motor. Do I have a problem as well ??
M.J. mentioned gapping spark plugs. I checked my plugs and there is nothing to gap ?? just a flat plug with no steel tip to gap. Is this normal, a newer spark plug ?
Once back at the dock I sat there for thirty minutes and restarted the boat a dozen times with no problem with the ball. ?????
That god it did happen out in the bay with those waves. Whew !!.
With the new wire harness and gear box on, Ive noticed the boat idles lower, around 700 rpms. Is this a simple and quick adjustment ?
All in all, it wasnt the day I was looking for, but did manage to get out and find out how the V does in bad conditions. Here a few pics. ENjoy.
Mike, Lisa, and ABBEY. ;D

Re: Wild Ride Today

those are just a "newer style" plug, my manual says to use the ""gapless" plugs for more frequent high speed operation, I use the stock conventional plug gapped to .030

Re: Wild Ride Today

Thanks REEL. Might sound strange, but I feel so much safer having that lanard ?? attached to me. Today was the day to be tossed over the side if it ever would happen. Knowing the boat would shut made me abit easier, knowing the wife couldnt leave my A$$ behind.
;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D.

Re: Wild Ride Today

Glad you got home safe. Not a great first trip for the dog, I imagine?

Your report and talk of the lanyard kind of brings home the point that our First Mates need to know how to operate the boat, in case something happens to the Captain. My wife is fine in the open water, hates docking. But she hasn't run the boat in really rough water, and if I fell overboard I'm hoping she could stay near me!

Nice pics, too. 8)

Re: Wild Ride Today

Just somethin' to think about:

A guy gets tossed from his boat takin' his kill-switch "plug" w/ him...now wife is in a disabled boat and CAN'T get back to man-overboard and CAN'T avoid beam-seas and CAN'T get back to bank even if she could ??? ...

Not sure the solution to this scenario, but it doesn't play well for me :P ...

What's the answer here??...

Re: Wild Ride Today

Hammer,
I tried to go into the bay Saturday morning,
nothin happen there, just too much chop.
but by the afternoon, it calmed considerably.
Went about 1/3 of the way to Cape May, stopped to fish,
caught one sand shark about a foot long.
On the way back in, I was going against the tide,
a little rougher ride, but not so bad.

Sunday didn't get out until afternoon, but the bay was good,
not glass, but good.
No fishin, just swimmin and playin around.

About your squeezy, check your gas filters, I have a
glass tube style in line with replacable elements.
The new gas is cleaning my tank and the sediment is getting
caught by the filter.
When clogged, the squeezy goes flat and then the engine
cuts out.
I have to clean the filter and then squeeze the ball for gas.
Sometimes I am in a hurry and I don't tighten the clamps
enough. Then I can squeeze a lot and not get gas, until I realize what I did.

By the way, Sunday I ate at the Lewes Irish Eyes around 2:00 PM,
I was watching for ya.

Re: Wild Ride Today

Glad ya made it home. Ditch the deadman lanyard. ;)
On really windy rough days I leave the boat home and head to the beach with my windsurfin' rig. Twix 20 to 30 knots of wind it's a blast. You should try it. You'll love it.

Re: Wild Ride Today

Parishhit,
Just missed ya at Eyes. I was there at 6pm. Working of course. :( .
Just recently installed a new gas filter, and I also have that inline tinly litle glass filter as well, but havent changed that one. I guess its a clog or its sucking air ??? ???. The ball itself is in good shape, not dry rotted or cracked.
The dog is doing ok now, not sure if she's looking to ever go back again. ;D

Re: Wild Ride Today

Yeah PiPe-Dream, Wife wont dock the boat either, Im still learning to dock myself. Hell I just bought extra bumpers to lessen the impact when docking, but I am getting better now and so are the locals who fish on the boat dock. They now know to RUN when they see me coming in. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

good point RAP. jennifer a seasoned veteran but, if she cant crank the boar.??? think i'll go ahead and attach an extra 'key' to the side of the dash. ya'll mighta just saved my life, good job guys!

Re: Wild Ride Today

Rap's comments are why I don't use the deadman. If I'm alone on the boat and it gets a little rough I use it, in other words seldom. If someone else is in the boat they will have a MOB situation and trying to keep an eye on the MOB while gaining control of the boat and dealing with sea conditions. Obviously easier if three or more on board but you still don't want to have to play around with a deadman key (spare) and getting the boat restarted. If the conditions make that tough I believe you have just put others in jeopardy and reduced your chances of survival especially if you got hurt going overboard which is a common situation.
When traveling solo is the only time in my opinion.
