Question for the OMC God!!
You know that 1988 175hp Evinrude my budy had I was working on, well he wants to repower and has offered me the motor.
The motor runs great now that I have got all the bugs out of it for him!! He is running it on a 20' Grady walk around. Now here is the thing, one of the problems we had was that when you got it on the water it would run then start to surg, no gas then have gas and so on, it would start real hard if we shut it down?? This would go on for a bit then she smooth out and be fine the rest of the day!! I mean start like a light switch, and sound great while it moved us 35 mph+ Then one day out with another friend it started again, he had noticed that there was a clamp missing on the fuel line, we replaced and ran great the whole day. Now when you start her up and take off you get a small and I mean small surge were it wants to take off, this will just be a few times with in let say 1/2 mile then never agaim the whole day. ReAlly sounds great, and pushes great, just this worries me a bit?? Have you heard of anything like this before?? I can get the motor for $700 maybe a bit less?? what you think?? I will try to get some pic tomorrow |
Re: Question for the OMC God!!
It could be many things, The first question that comes to mind would be; Is the fuel bulb equally as firm while it is misbehaving as it normally is? This might answer some questions about fuel delivery.
From there I would ask about the temp. when the problems start? If that had any relationship to the problem? |
Re: Question for the OMC God!!
Well the ball stays almost hard, can squeez a little.
Temp is not the problem!! this is when you first start of the day, use to be anytime till we got the clamps on?? Pumps water and the heads are nothing but warm after a 7 mile run. Thanks! |
Re: Question for the OMC God!!
i know exactly what you've got had the same problem and pulled out lots of hair till i found out i had a bad electronics pack. Motor would run great some days run crappy and loaf the next. hard to start some days and crank on a turn the next. Now as to which one is bad can't help ya there i say buy one pack then try on one bank see if problems goes away if not put the old set on the other side and try again.

Re: Question for the OMC God!!
that is the power pack you are talking about??
I have seen them on ebay for like $50 but the motor sounds real good!! CB has heard it and says the same. Think its worth $700?? What should the compresion be like in that motor?? Thanks! |
Re: Question for the OMC God!!
factory was around 120 psi and $700 is agreat buy. But just because it sounds good doesn't mean it is running at the best it can. yeah power pack will be the issue. that is a need to fix issue due to it will end up burning a piston or cylinder.
|
Re: Question for the OMC God!!
If I buy a power pack and thats not it, could it be a bad coil or something like that??
|
Re: Question for the OMC God!!
um never seen a coil do that but it's poss.
|
Re: Question for the OMC God!!
I dunno. From what I heard, it sounded more like the motor was cutting out momentarily rather than surging. I still think it's a fuel related problem. But, I've been wrong once or twice in the past. Skools is definately more "skooled" than me in this area. That's for sure.
Skools; from what I heard, it seems to cut out momentarily only for a short time after iniatial startup for the day. Once it clears up, it didn't seem to happen again all day. Could a bad diaphragm in the fuel pump cause intermittent problems if it were getting aged a bit. I can imagine that upon startup, the diaphragm may be not so flexible. Then after running a bit more, start working more effectively. Is that even possible? I know I'm probably reaching a bit here. It just didn't seem to be electrical to me. Like I said; I dunno. ??? It certainly does seem to run like a champ once it clears up though. Sounds good. Plenty of torque. I think it would make a good motor for MJ if he can get it for the $700. |
Re: Question for the OMC God!!
could be lots of things.stator, old fuel hose, reed, ring... does it 'chirp' at idle? have you looked at the magnets? more than likely hte cdbox like like skoolz said. them things are funny. sometime they run fine till they get warm. sometimes its the opposite. sometimes they just screw with ur mind for fun! i wouldnt buy a used one though. or a sierra for that matter. diaphrams are also cheap. but, for 700 bucks its hard to go wrong. good luck.
|
Re: Question for the OMC God!!
Will the coils from my old 1985 140 hp be the same as the ones on this motor? If so I could send him a couple to try instaed of buying one.
|
Re: Question for the OMC God!!
Good luck w/ that '88, MJ...my '86 Rude was a great runnin' motor...lots of years of service from 'er...
Have you diconnected the VRO?...unless you've gone thru every component of the auto-oilin' system, I wouldn't trust it...mixin's a piece-of-cake w/ one of those Accu-Mix bottles...$3.99 most boat dealers...Wally-Market may have 'em...works good even in boats w/ multiple tanks... ;) ... |
Re: Question for the OMC God!!
If I remember correctly, the VRO was disconnected and oil was premixed by MJ's buddy.

Well I could do a parts search and see? Do you know the part # should be on the side of the power pack? Thanks for th offer!! For $700 I should not be expecting gold!! But I want something to last a couple of seasons at least?? Then maybe I be in a better place then I am now! I got $800 for the last junker, and I will tell you it ha not been easy to hold on to it! Thanks all! |
Re: Question for the OMC God!!
Another vote for the power pack. I had a similar problem with poor running, surging on our old 155 -- and a new power pack took care of it. Ran like a champ after that.
|
Re: Question for the OMC God!!
$700 sounds great to me.
|
Re: Question for the OMC God!!
Shick, I just did a parts search and I belive I have the:
OMC 583114 Then I searched for yours, the funny thing is I could not find a 85 140?? But they had 1977 140 OMC 581731 78 to 83, 140 OMC 582125 88 to 99, 140 OMC 584041 Thanks for the offer!! :-* |
Re: Question for the OMC God!!
coil wise both motors use same coil.
OMC part # 0582508 The power pack on the 175 is as follows OMC part # 0583114 fit's 1986 to 1988 150's and 175's |
Re: Question for the OMC God!!
MJ, the power packs on my '86 Rude were good when it went down...now that was 2 yrs ago, but if ya WANT me to, I'll check w/ Holdens and see what he wants for 'em if he's still got 'em... :D ...
|
Re: Question for the OMC God!!
Well if they have them yea!! Thanks!!
I can get New off ebay $50, but as siad I had a hard time holding the $800 so I have to come up with $100 for the motor :-[ Wow I can't belive as little as 2 year ago I opuld have bought a new motor and now crying over $50 :-/ so I guess by the answers here I should by the motor? I going o tell the guy I have $600 and see if I can get it for that? Hell it needs a power pack and I did all that work for him on it before. Thats got to be worth something?? I will let you guys know how I make out, I will buy for the $700 if I have to. So looks like I am almost back in the water!! Gee I might be able to fish 1 or 2 times before I have to fog for the winter :'( |
Re: Question for the OMC God!!
So...... Do you want me to wait until you buy the motor to send you a couple of coils, or go ahead and send them? Let me know! :)

Re: Question for the OMC God!!
Ok guys lots has happened since this morning!!
My wife has not been feeling well and today the lion Roared!! 911 take her to Hos. She has a real bad infection in the graph site were they did the bi-pass, Make a long afternoon short, she has infection, sugar threw the roof, she has heart problems and the heart has been racing like mad all day and they trying to get it to slow down (140), she has had stuff coming from both ends all day. They just took her for Kat scan then for a stay in ICU till they get things fixed?? -------------------------------------------------------------------- Talked to the guy with the motor and he will only go $700 cause its for me, or he would try to sell for more. $700 is what he needs for the new motr, 2004 Suzi 140 4 stroke. So I told him its mine!! but I have $650, he will wait for the other $50 from my next pay ck. So this leaves me short on getting the power packs. *I guess I won't be in the water for the fall run. I will wait till the spring i guess. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Quote:

Re: Question for the OMC God!!
Thanks Hammer!! and all!!
I was talking to someone else tonight and they were on CB's side thinking fuel. he says that when the clamps were missing it was causing it to run lean, and after adding clamps it has almost fixed the problem. And it stands to reason we are on the right track?? That it might need a carb adjustment to fix? He went on to say that this new gas has been messing with alot of things!! So I opened the repair manual to see how to adjust, and this is what I found 1. * * * * *Some gasolines sold for marine use now contain alcohol, although this fact may not be advertised. A mixtute of 10 % ethyl alcohol or ethanol and 90% unleaded gasoline is called gasohol. This is considered suitable for use in Johson and Evinrude outboards. Some gasolines, however, contain methyl alcohol or methanol. This is not recommended for 1973 to 1986 outboards and only under the provisions outlined under Proper Fuel Selection *in this chapter for 1987 to 1990 models. 2. * * * * If gasohol or a gasoline/methanol mixture (1987 to 1990 models) is used with any regularity, Johnson & Evinrude recommend that the carburetor jets be changed to provide a richer mixture to maintain good performance and pervent possible engin damage. See your dealer for recommended rejetting according to your needs. What do you think of that skools?? *Maybe I had 2 problems?? one was fuel that we fixed and one with the power pack that was hidden by the first problem?? |
Re: Question for the OMC God!!
MJ...went by Holdens yesterday and both power-packs ARE still on the motor...THE man out, so will get price today and get back to ya...you advise from there...
Sounds like could be fuel prob, so beyond gettin' price I'll hold off til you green light it ;) ... Sorry to hear your wife still havin' problems... :-/ ...here's to better days ahead... |
Re: Question for the OMC God!!

Re: Question for the OMC God!!
MJ, sorry to hear your wife is back in the hospital. I will pray for her recovery.
My Dad had his second bypass surgery a number of years ago, and afterward they had a similar problem with his heart rate. The ended up installing a pacemaker for him. It worked out well. |
Re: Question for the OMC God!!
Thanks for the prays Pipe and reel!
That info on the gas was in the Clymer book publish 1991!! I guess they knew it was coming!! Quote:

And comes with all controls and cables ! and get this he has a bracket on his boat so they cables are pleanty long! But I will need to get a tac, as he has never had one. I am going to see if I can sell the Yamaha tac on ebay then buy one for the rude. Thanks |
Re: Question for the OMC God!!
sry to hear bout ur wife. best wishes.
you might wanna think about getting a roll of hose and just replacing all the fuel lines. it could be a small pin hole or crack that seals itself hwen the motor gets warm. cheap project that prob aint a bad idea on a motor that old anyway. |
Re: Question for the OMC God!!

As for the lines and stuff this is on his boat right now!! My boat has all new lines and everything already!! Maybe it will be better on mine I have no idea?? Well I have made plans to remove his motor on Saturday, He is bring it to my house and we are going to park both boats side by side and remove and install all in one shot!! Will take another day to install all controls and stuff! I should be able to get in the water tuesday!! Whatelse I have not old you guys is that I have removed the Bow rail and repaired all the holes! Also fixed holes from a old attna mount. Also one of the last trips I hit a rock the size of my truck! Riped a 1" X 10" of gelcoat right off the bow, and then when the boat went side ways it riped about 1" X 8" of gelcoat off!! >:( But that has all been fixed and looks great now!! Got my son to give her a brand new coat of bottom paint! She may ot run, but she sure does look pretty!! |
Re: Question for the OMC God!!
Sorry to hear of your wife, hope all turns out well.
It is amazimg what doctors can do these days, my dad had bypass surgery about five years ago, he is now 75 and goes dancing every night. Doctor says he is in better shape than ever. You mentioned you removed the bow rail, will you be replacing? If not, I did get some harware from RacerX, he may have two more, I am waiting on an answer, But I need six total. If you have any of these in the picture, I will buy them from you? http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g1...shht/angle.jpg |
Re: Question for the OMC God!!
parishht, thanks!!
as for the rail pieces, My rail was made coustom to replace the old alumin one. For the last owner. It has welded feet right to the stands, so I have one of what you ask. But, I do have in my surplus 4 feet!! 2 are low angle for the ends of the rail and two are angled for the stands of the rail. They for 1" pipe and they are perfect except they are missing the allen set screws that hold the pipe in. I am sure you can get them at a marine stor or hardware store, I know my hardware had them, but not stainless. Let me know if they any use to you!! http://syncboard.com/albums/Boat-Tac...icture_263.jpg http://syncboard.com/albums/Boat-Tac...icture_264.jpg http://syncboard.com/albums/Boat-Tac...icture_265.jpg http://syncboard.com/albums/Boat-Tac...icture_268.jpg |
