How hard would it be to build?

http://www.nauticaldesigninc.com/leanb2sm.htm

I would love a set of these for my new V, but I could never pay their price for them.

Any ideas on building something like this?

Materials? Cost?

Am I nuts?

Re: How hard would it be to build?

easy build it out of wood then glass inside and out and paint.

I guess plywood? What size (thickness)? What kind of frame would you build under it?

Re: How hard would it be to build?

just 1/2 would work for that and use 2x2 on the inside of your corners to glue and screw too. just don't use treated wood glass won't stay bonded on it.

I'll stick with my storage seat in mine ;D. It's also insulated.

Re: How hard would it be to build?

Plywood glass on the inside and out is the ez'st cheapest method. Or you can build a mold out of MDF and layup your own glass . . . that is real EZ too . . . but more expensive. Probably cost $300 per seat in materials if you go all glass and build it yourself.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

I just finished my bracket . . . just have to prime and paint!!

Nice job on that bracket BS.

Which method will be the lightest when completed?

And what is MDF?

Re: How hard would it be to build?

Randleman...the one you show above would put the rider well above the top of the windshield...if that's where ya wanna be, then go for it, but in winter, I'm tucked in BEHIND mine ;) ...

MDF- Medium Density Fiberboard.

parishht 03-07-2007 01:30 PM

Re: How hard would it be to build?

MDF is heavy and it beats the $hit out of cutting blades.
I think the plywood method sounds best.

I am going to try and make one for my V,
last year, my passenger seat collapsed and I need to replace it.

Maybe in July when I go out there, I could sneak up there
and tie to the roof and bring it back for ya. ;)

OR,
maybe one of my workmates who goes to Stockton all the time
will through it in their luggage for ya. ;D

Yeah, I am just looking at the general design. *But I think a variation of the one FERM posted would be just right.

HEY REEL,

You got any pics of your seat boxes? I know you have a camera. ;)

Blue_Runner 03-07-2007 05:18 PM

Re: How hard would it be to build?

Reel has twin 40 gallon fuel tanks under his seat boxes, which was a good idea IMO.

RB - just think if you had 80 gallons you would only have to fill up like 2 times each summer!

;D

Randleman...here's the best pic I got
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y90...n/P4210005.jpg
I'll get dimensions if ya want...I built these too heavy...they could be made lighter...it's all ply and vinyl...cheap n' quick ;)...each box houses a 40 gal fuel tank ...

How much do ya know or are willing to learn about fiberglass?... :D

bigshrimpin 03-07-2007 05:29 PM

Re: How hard would it be to build?

Medium density fiberboard, oil based clay, bondo, and PARTALL wax is what I use to make the one off molds (molds that are design to use ONLY once).

Re: How hard would it be to build?

Those seats are just simple boxes very easy to layup. Just use mat and 18oz on the flat surfaces and do all the edges with 1708 tape or 1.5 oz mat. I'd also core the flat areas with 1/2" marine ply squares or some type of foam.

RULE #1 => ONLY use rollers to apply resin on fiberglass mat.

The size of the box was driven by the size of the 40 gal tanks in each, but if anybody wants dimensions, I'll get 'em...even if it had a belly-tank, these boxes woulda been great storage...got the idea from a buddy's Robalo 2160 ;) ...an added bonus to these boxes was a place to put ROD-HOLDERS... ;D ...ready access from the cockpit ;) ...

Yeah I know, gas was $2.03 when I pulled my V home a few weeks ago, now its $2.49. I cant wait til we get the two oil tycoons out of office so I can afford gas again.

Re: How hard would it be to build?

Randleman,

this has been a topic here many times. Seems like everyone is looking for some of those seat boxes. I think Wellcraft actually included them on some of the later version V's. Hammer and Pipe, and Ferm all have the exact same one. :-/

Re: How hard would it be to build?

I was just looking at the new Wellcraft boats on their
website, I was hoping that they would have boxes.

Thye do, but they have been incorpoated into the mold for the upper half of the boats.

Take a lookkee:
