MJ any snow yet?
Our local weather forcaster says NE is in for it, possibly 12 " or more of snow. Seems like you get hit hard every year at this time.

Re: MJ any snow yet?
Almost hit 80 today here in Delaware. Did a little bit work today on th eV. yanked the battery cables off and replacing with new ones. Lifted the motor up with my pinched nerve in my neck. Yes I hurt myself doing it. :-[
Look at the trim pump. Cant figure how the pump comes off without pulling the motor. Only found one bolt to remove the trim motor. :'( |

Re: MJ any snow yet?
As a devoted member, I ran out and snapped a photo of my titlt trim motor.
Using the tilt trim swith on the controls, I hit up and down and both solinoids were clicking, making me believe that the solinoids are working....I guess. Anybody ever yank a trim motor, do you need to pull the motor ?? http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f1...r/DSC02382.jpg |

Re: MJ any snow yet?
Cape Cod is in the rain right now!! Pouring rain that is!! Thery say that the snow will be coming tomorrow for the NE
Caoe Cod is not included in the snow, what ever we get will be washed away as the 39* ocean water will keep us to warm. But inland may get up to 12"?? Hammer, I have replaced a tilt motor with out removing the motor, but it is tricky!! Cause the only thing holding the motor is 2 bolts on one side with one side plate, If not careful you can and will break the cast alum, and find the motor on the ground!! But it can be done, I did it!! |

Temps dropped more then 36 degrees here. Cold and raining now. :'(
Thanks for the scoop M.J. Hope to play with it more when the warm weather returns. |

Re: MJ any snow yet?
Hammer, do you really want to know how to pull that trim motor :o Just cause the relays click doesn't mean they work. Bypass those puppy's and see what happens first.
In order to removing the tilt / trim motor you have to remove the starbboard side motor bracket. It's not that the job is that bad, its the stuck fasteners that can be a problem. I will say that on my 88', I R&R'ed the whole hydraulic assembly with few issues. Nothing was frozen. Just be glad your not working on a 80's Yammy. |

Re: MJ any snow yet?
you need to determine if it is a 3 wire motor or a two wire motor, if its a three wire motor, it will have one for up( blue), one for down( green), and one for ground(black). Go to the relays and check for voltage coming out of the relay when its ingaged(cehck the blue when triimng up, green while down). If its a two wire, not only do you need to check for voltage, you need to check the other lead for aground( the two wire doesn't have a dedicated ground wire, it operates thru the relay not being used, it has a normal path to ground, if you don't have the path to ground, you can suppply it witih all the power and it will never work

Re: MJ any snow yet?
I'm no expert . . . but it looks like a three wire setup to me. All the two wire units I've seen have wires coming out of the motor like a cord to a lamp in your living room.
Spares is the pro here . . . I've got both 2 and 3wire setups in my garage right now. I was able to tilt a two wire style up and down (for ebay pics) just buy connect them to a battery pack. There may be different types of two wire setups . . . but that worked for me. Up = (positive to positve, negative to negative) and then reversing polarity to tilt down Down = (negative to positive, positive to negative). -------------------------------------------------------------- Forget what I said in the PM. I just look at my 3 wire deal in that garage and I'm 99.9% sure you have to pull the motor off the boat to get that trim motor off. Like airslot said you need clearance to get the motor out . . . removing the right side bracket sounds like an option, but I'm not sure it's any easier than pulling the motor. --------------------------------------------------------------- Hopefully it's just a low battery, loose ground or bad relays. |

Re: MJ any snow yet?
Shrimp, thanks for the input and will disreguard the PM.
Yanking the solinoids is the cheapest place to start, will start from there and if that dont work, will start screaming, kicking, knocking out the neighbor. ;D |

Re: MJ any snow yet?
Well . . . If it comes to that . . . I got a few in stock . . . but you can probably just get a motor for cheap. Problems like the one you having now is why I love the old school huge single ram setups with the external pumps. K.I.S.S. baby.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...760&rd=1,1 Here's a two wire setup that I have up for sale now. I have another that was brand new in 2003. I even have the receipt from the previous owner who paid $2038.88 (parts and labor) to have the entire unit replaced. |

Re: MJ any snow yet?
Shrimp, you know how to remove the solinoids ??
Looking at this pic. I see some small clamps on the corners of the solinoid, unless they are part of the unit itself. Sorry for Hijacking the thred MAC. http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f1.../solinoids.jpg |

Re: MJ any snow yet?
that looks like a three wire, just jump from the red to the green or red to the blue and see if the motor runs,( make sure the black wire is grounded) as far as removing the selenoids, teh screws are hidden in this pic, but they are orinited vertically, above and below each selenoid

Re: MJ any snow yet?
Hammer, no need to pull the motor off the boat. I replaced my whole T&T assembly. I was able to remove the starboard motor mounting bracket without removing the motor from the boat. Get out there and jump them solenoids so we know what ya got....it ain't raining that hard ;D

When I did mine what i did was put a jack under the leg and just gave it a couple of pumps to stabilize it. Then I removed the steering cable. Then all side bracket bolts, Be careful here, they can be corroded pretty bad! Now the 3 bolts holding the bracket to the boat. Here is the worse part! Undo the steering tube bolt, now you will have to hammer the crap out of the bracket to get it off the tube. No words of wisdom here, using chisel hammer what have you and how ever you have to bang that thing off!! Spray it, heat it, and it will go! Remember, the only thing holding the motor now is the one side bracket! After that is off the rest is easy!! I left mine apart the whole winter with the jack under it. When you put it back toghter make sure all bolts are clean and have a small amount of antiseize on them!! Reassemble and enjoy!! |

Re: MJ any snow yet?
I'm going from memory here, so don't hold me to it, but...
You don;t have to remove the steering cable. *Back the nut off, loosen the other nut on the steering tube while your there. Undo the mounting bolts throught the transom. Remove the 2 ? bolts going through the starboard mount bracket into the T & T unit. * Now, the mounting bracket should rotate up out of the way. *You can remove the outter nut on the tilt tube and then the motor bracket comes right off. *Edit here: May not come off, may slide down the steering cable and rotate up out of the way. I seem to recall getting the advice of placing a block of wood under that side of the tilt tube to help support the weight. At this point you'll have access to all that you need. *I do remember that it wasn't a difficult job at all. *I picked up a used T&T unit for under $200 and just swapped the whole thing out. *I had some questionalble hydraulics that would let the motor fall over time. *As the problem progressed it would lose trim while running. |
