Boat Shed

My carpenter knows that I want a building for my boat and my part time business, so he came by yesterday and picked me up. *He showed me a building he built for a guy's boat. *Its like 30' x 40' with 2 huge garage doors on the front. *One is 12 x 12 and the other is 10 x 10 I think. *He's got a SeaPro 238 walaround in there with a hardtop and a 200hp Johnson 4 stroke on the back so its a good sized building! *I'm thinking about letting my carpenter build one just like it behind my house! *What do ya'll think?

The guy with the building had 2 Golden Retrievers. *Here is one with a tree branch. *He would do the friendly growl - "let's play" thing if you so much as just looked at him. *Such a sweetie. *I might just have to get me a couple of those. *;)

BR, the configuration of the shed is GREAT...but gotta tell ya one thing...the discoloration around the bottom walls is 1st stages of rotting wood...what did he use?...did he seal?...what did he floor it with?...is the wood touchin ground?...looks like ;) ...ain't tryin' to splash cold water :-* ...yer idea is EGGZACKLY what I'd like to do... juss avoidin' future and certain redos...wish I could start on mine tomorrow ;D ;D ...you get one of those done and you'll be a INDOOR-DAWG!! 8) 8) ...

Oh yeah...that's one LUCKY young lady ;) ...

Re: Boat Shed

RAP - I noticed the discolored wood. It is cypress, which is about the best you can get wood-wise. He certainly could use some gutters, which I think would stop that splashing on the sides. Me personally, I want covered lien-to on that side with a sink and fish cleaning table. Kinda like Stinky's setup.

The floor in his is just gravel right now. Tony, the carpenter, put a level treated board around the base so that if he wanted to he could just pour the concrete in up to the treated board. I know its expensive but I'd have to have mine 100% concrete from day 1.

Otherwise it would never get done.

Re: Boat Shed

Hey Slinger how about 7am tomorrow morning ;)

I like the way your thinking on the block. I'm definitely gonna do that. 8)

That's probably why that siding is "wicking" up the water so bad on that shed side. :-/

Its nice to go look at one first before you build. I know I could build this myself but a) it would take for ever and b) my carpenter has 2 things going for him, actually 3 - does good work, fast, cheap 8)

I appreciate the input - good eye RAP and Slinger!

Re: Boat Shed

You are definately on the right track with the floor first. I've got two buddy's that built the shed and were going to pour the floor later. 5 years later, one still has his on dirt, and the other finally poured the floor, but what a nightmare to finish & float.

Hey Blue, thats awesome. Slinger is right, back in Virginia I built a 20X30 garage I had a 10' wide 8' tall door, I ran 3 courses of block all around and had it framed using 8' walls. It was like 9'6" inside and my old V20 fit inside fine!

PS. Your little one is a cutie!

Thanks Poobah!

I'm gonna price it out 2 ways - 1 way will be all metal frame and siding, and poured of course. The other way will be wood framing (on block) and poured. If the metal isn't too much more expensive I'll go with it.

Phat, thanks for the testimonials! Trust me I know what its like to say, "I'll just do this for now and later I'll do such and such." Yeah right! I know how lazy I am better than anyone!

Re: Boat Shed

Nice building and a very good idea to have one to keep a boat out of the weather. I am a former carpenter and have a few things to add to the discussion. (I retired early from carpentry so I could do something easier on my body so now I'm a firefighter - smooth move ::) )

Whether it's a pole shed or elaborate garage, you need to start with a proper foundation. Knowing your local soils and how to prep the footings is the first thing or you will pay for it later. The local building inspector should be able to provide info on this that is applicable to your area. Soil contact and wood is asking for trouble as well. You all have some nices boats, may as well do the storage building right. A lot of info on building construction is available online to help you along the way. I frequent a diy builder forum and there are some novices building small houses that are really amazing. It's not rocket science but it takes attention to detail. Remember: flat, plumb, and square.

I see alot of incredible work being done on the boats here and there is no reason you guys can't build a storage shed for the boat yourselves if you want to. Although you have to decide if the time and effort is worth it vs. paying a professional. Be aware that there are alot of people portraying themselves as professionals out there that are far from it. Sort of like the auto tech trades nowadays - you have to look to find a good one. I've seen some work that I don't feel comfortable even walking through the door - makes me queasy really :o (I know, I'm anal)

Suggestions on design: build it with taller rollup door than you think you need and install another one at the opposite end. This will allow you to drive in one end, drop the trailer and drive straight out. That's the way mine will be!! ;D Or if you have a dedicated hauling vehicle, build it long enough to leave it hooked together during fishing season.

Ya gotta have a garage!!!

Re: Boat Shed

That is a nice shed.
I know that if I had the time, my three car garage would be a workshop,
my one car garage would still be the equipment shed.
and my barn would be the boat fix pavillion.

BUT, alas, in an effort to keep peace in the family,
I keep my hobbies to a minimum at home.
This way I have time to redo/restore my old home.

Fire, that would be nice. Matter of fact that is one reason I'm not rushing the building of the shed. The land next to mine might be going up for sale soon, so I've heard. If it does and me or my family buys it I will have the means to do just that. Otherwise my land isn't wide enough to have the drivethru shed in the location I'm thinking of. Good thought though. '

About the shed being big enough to leave the truck hooked to it - don't I wish! This thing is already gonna be 40ft long. I guess I could go 60ft :o NOT! My wife would have my sack nailed to a tree. I like the way you're thinking though!
