Hello

Hello,
I found this site while looking for info on a 1983 v20.
I just bought her this weekend. It is a step down in size from the boat I just sold. I had a 28' Baha.but, with the price of fuel it became to costly to operate. My v20 has the 470 in her. (170 hp).She also has a Honda 9.9 4 stroke for trolling. The 9.9 is just 2 yrs old. She is good shape and ready the water, other than a fresh coat of bottom paint. I am her fourth owner.I will use her mostly on Lake Erie in Ohio. I have seen other V20's on Erie and have been impressed by the way they handle short chop Erie is known for. I will post pics of her when I get her home.
Can anyone tell what the GPH is with a 470 and what are the power options if the 470 should take a puke?
Dave

Welcome Aboard Diver! Glad to have you.

If the I/O pukes and dies, the popular choice is to plug the hole and hang an outboard on a bracket!

Ohloa, ahloa, DD. 6-8 gph would probably be expected with a 470. Twins on a bracket would be lovely.

If it take a puke get on the radio and give Mac Attack a shout. I'm on the Noth Shore of the western basin. Welcome to the site. Go bracket with an E-Tec. Billy Mac ;D

Welcome diverdave, I'd put in a 383 stroker with a super charger and headers that come out the top of the engine hatch.

Welcome, Dave! I don't know much about I/O's, but I have heard that V-20s are popular on Erie. Best of luck with your '83 (it was a very good year ;) ).

Welcome to the mayhem of V-20.com... ;D ...there's lots of great info here ... as you've already seen, the popular opinion is add bracket and outboard when the I/O gives up ... but you'll have to make your own decision there...does your "V" have trim tabs?...they will be helpful in sticking the sharp bow into the chop for a better ride from your "V"...I'm trying to procure a set now...

Good luck and post some pix when ya can... ;) ...

Hey man,

welcome aboard. I also have the 470, and she is 23 years old and chugging along. I love the I/O and am one of the few here that will replace her rather than going bracket ;D. the motor and the boat have been very good to me.

I have heard that a brand new V6 chevy will bolt right up to the Alpha One outdrive we have, so that would be one option if you want to keep her I/O.

Re: Hello

Hey Diver. Bracket/outboard is a great option for the I/o conversion on these boats. I seriously doubt you'd be sorry.

Welcome to the site. Is your 9.9 Honda connected to the main fuel tank? What about steering? I have a 9.9 Johnson tiller steer. I just use the big motor as a rudder to steer. In the V-21 I have room in the splashwell for a 6 gallon gas tank and the main motor can still tilt all the way forward.
