Looks like you have a diamond in the rough, that's just the way we like them. Have you got any other stats on her? What year is the hull, motor? Have you got any other goodies on her you want to mention? Oh yeah, we want more pictures (a little smaller please). |

1976 V-20 steplift
100 original hours on the motor 175 johnson runs great stainless steel prop 4 electric downriggers 2 manuls dws 2 20 gallon tans float-on aluminum trailer hull is solid 10 flushmount rod holders auto bildge pump power tilt and trim i love tuna fishing and am wondering if anyone has taken one offshore huge waves dont bother me |

It's not unusual to find a V offshore, but being that it's new to you, and I really question the 100 original hours on the engine thing, you may want to make some shakedown cruises first. You have some work to do to get her ready for that kind of fishing. By big waves, how exactly big do you mean?

Sorry 'bout my first reply, but the Hudon is what, 80 - 110 miles pending on where you sail from, right? Seriouisly, not V-20 territory on a good day. And this from a guy who likes to push the limits, me ;)

first im making a hard top for it
my uncle just happens to work at a paint factory so ill be painting it soon my father in law has a 18 horse out board for a kicker im going to have to take all the carpet out i need to replace the gages i would like to cut out the cuddy and rais it up a foot or two to make the wife is happy i would like to find a tandam axle trailer for it IM WILLING TO TRADE MY ALUMINUM ONE FOR A STEEL ONEAND SOME STUFF!!!! |

If you have no other choice paint it. I'm in the process of removing old paint on the upper deck and getting back to the original gelcoat. You can watersand with sponge blocks and buff with coarse rubbing compound to return to an almost factory shine. This can be done in incriments so as to not take all your time. Just my 2 cents. |

Your boat has the same hull design as mine: http://www.wellcraftv20.com/gallery/...umName=album06 It looks like you found a nice solid hull with a good engine. I don't know if you'll be able to reach tuna territory, but I added a lot of range by installing a third fuel tank under the bench seat that I installed in the stern. It holds about 18 gallons. My boat's prior owner also liked to fish offshore. In order to get additional range he secured two portable 12-gallon tanks on either side of the engine in the engine well, which you can see in some of the photos on page three. I really like the in-floor hatches of the V-20 models that were produced in those years. When I'm fishing I fill my rear hatch with saltwater and use it to hold any fish I catch. Even after a full day in the sun, the fish are generally still alive when I return to the dock. A number of guys on this site will likely advise you to replace those teak hatch covers with starboard in order to reduce your maintenance. If you're inclined to do so, please don't throw the old ones out. I may be interested in buying them from you. I hope your boat gives you as much pleasure as mine has given me. Good luck. Fitz |

Is it just me or has the transom been reworked? The pic of the motor shows what looks like a redone transom top. My old 75' had a alum. cap on the transom.

You can expect to burn around 6 gallons per hour average.
Doing the math different ways as to either trolling, running out and anchoring or just cruising, you can burn it all up in less than a day or last almost a week. In my case I will run for 45 minutes out, fish,move around a couple of times and return home. This usually translates to 8-12 gallons used in a day. |

And don't depend entirely on the fuel gauge(s).
Notice the tank tapers from top to bottom. Best way is to level the boat by placing a 2' level at the floor of the tank, run the jack stand up or down till level, drain the tank(s)and put back 10 gallons and check the gauge (calibrate if possible) as to where 1/2 a tank is. |

Looks like a nice find but not sure about the 100hr thing. With all those down riggers some one was doing allot of trolling and that will add hours very quickly. Your probably better off that it was run to keep it in shape. What are your plans for the boat?

Still, I agree that 100hrs seems impossible however look at the paint on the bolts, there is no sign the motor has been repaired. That motor appears in unbelieveable shape. :)

Congrats on your first V!! You have some work ahead of you, but it will all be worth it in the end! I would put the hard top and raising of the bow on the back burner for now, you have lots to do before you get there! My boat is also a 1975 as is reels, so we know your model well *;) It took me 5 years to get some kind of order going, cause I used it and fixed it at the same time. Remember Starboard is your friend!! and you going to need lots of it! *I have replaced all the wood in mine with it, and can tell you anything you need to know. Everyone here has great Ideas on lots of repairs and projects!! Look around, ask questions try to put a game plan toghter before you start, make things go much smoother! Good Luck!! |

Jason, Congrats and Welcome. You found both a great boat and the best site for it. Biggest seas I've had it in were 8 to 10 ft. It did pretty good as I was moving along keeping in the troughs. Didn't stop to see how it handled at rest. Have fun.
