Any Sportsman / Coastal owners here?
I just picked up a 1986 250 Sportsman. I know you guys like pictures but by the time we got it home and finished doing a quick once over and cleanup we were running out of daylight, but here's goes...
http://www.kci2.com/big/37.jpg http://www.kci2.com/big/39.jpg I'll post more later as I go thru her better today. This means I have an extra boat that I need to get rid of which I'll put in the For Sale section. Look forward to hearing from any other owners. Steve p. |

BGA, you working on the V this weekend ???
|
Re: Any Sportsman / Coastal owners here?
Hey Hammer, naaahhh, but I did work on it through the week a little bit. Got the motor started for the first time. I also started installing the NFB steering, but I ran into a couple of snags. I'll post some pics on Monday. I'm not sure the design of my console will provide the amount of room that the product calls for. Soooo, I may have to cut out some of my console. No biggy... I planned on doing some fiberglass remodification to the dash anyway. I've learned a lot just watching Skool's progress on his 21 footer...
I hope all is well with you and your V this fine weekend. |
Re: Any Sportsman / Coastal owners here?

Re: Any Sportsman / Coastal owners here?
Nice one, I've been looking for one for awhile now. The best I found so far is an 82 with busted stringers and engine mounts(I'm looking for an I/O) that let the engine move and crack the transom some. He wanted 3500 for it with a junk trailer.

Re: Any Sportsman / Coastal owners here?
I had a 1984 sportsman 248 red and white with full inclosure with a very thirsty 235 johhnny on it that I ran for years very hard with no issues other than a soft spot behind the fish box which was a design error that the 248 had. A $50 trip to west marine and most of a saturday fixed it I now have a 240 coastal with a 225 johnny that is probably the best fish boat I have ever had including some high dollar ones. I like the 240 coastals which replalced the old 248 because they have the wash downs, live wells, outside fresh water shower and sink ,seperate coolers, cutting boards on each side ,euro transoms and huge fish boxes , hard tops with spreader lights and rocket launchers etc but they are both excellent boats and you can pick them up cheap compared to other boats in the same class. The 248 was a small kids family camper boat or mini cruiser that while it had a huge fish box it was not really set up as a fish boat like the coastal.I added an RV pump and plumed a salt water wash down that recessed flush right at the sea gate and installed a half assed live well inside the huge fish box that worked pretty well..They are very stable boats that can take a pounding and you still see lots of them out in the big blue...Frank

Re: Any Sportsman / Coastal owners here?
Hammer,
Thanks for the welcome (back). I've been checking in fairly regularly but haven't had much to say until now. I'm located in Central Mass. and last year I trailered to Boston Harbor and Buzzards Bay. This year I'd like to try Narragansett Bay, and Newburyport and/or Hampton too. The other boat is in the For Sale section under "19' Wellcraft/Manatee" I'm surprised that no one here scoped out this one. It was on Craig's List as well as ebay. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...m=130109009448 We spent the day out in the rain doing some more cleaning and checking out the motor. I believe it is the original 1986 V6 Special. Cold compression was 115-110-120-118-112-109. She fired up okay but I was running premix in a portable tank plus I think that the oil injection is working too so she's smoking real good: http://www.kci2.com/new/yami.avi Anyone know a how to check the injection out? I know the image junkies needs their photo fix so here are a few... Here's an overall shot. My daughter started buffing the top trim color: http://www.kci2.com/new/060.jpg Kind of makes the suburban shink a bit: http://www.kci2.com/new/061.jpg View from the helm. Hey, look, it's raining out! http://www.kci2.com/new/073.jpg Some of the interior. Can someone tell me what those metal plates on the face of the galley are for? http://www.kci2.com/new/077.jpg http://www.kci2.com/new/076.jpg Plumbing problems: http://www.kci2.com/new/089.jpg My son, Brian working on it: http://www.kci2.com/new/088.jpg Once we get a look under the counter it looks like the wiring needs some detailing too: http://www.kci2.com/new/090.jpg More pictures and question to follow. Re: Any Sportsman / Coastal owners here?
I remember that one. I don't pay much attention to the ones with the enclosed head though, I want the 4 sleeper model(like SKOOLS). I found a set of 89 140 JOHNSON's on CRAIGSLIST the other day, they'd make one go pretty good ;D. Now if I could find one like SKOOLS ;).
|
Re: Any Sportsman / Coastal owners here?
to test the oil injection premix the whole tank of fuel then fill the oil injection as well then run both after running out some fuel check to ensure the VRO (oil injection) is lower in oil if so then it's working if not then you saved your motor. the double oil won't hurt the motor it is actually good to do that every spring after storing to ensure all systems are working correctly. boat looks good.
hey Therm i have a pair of matched 25" Counter 140 Johnson's but my matched set of 225's sound better for this app. |
Re: Any Sportsman / Coastal owners here?
by the way send your daughter on down when she finish's your boat i have one in need of polishing too an i don't have time currently to polish it, it's just the 250 like yours lol.

Re: Any Sportsman / Coastal owners here?
Tally-Ho!!...what a great boat!!...you and your kids will REELY enjoy that for years to come ;) ... good ya got kids to come out and help fix 'er up ... no doubt work to be done, but they will learn from it and appreciate it more w/ some sweat equity in it ;) ...
What HP the Yammer?? Ya'll have fun...I know you will 8) ... Oh yeah...couldn't find the plates you mentioned in the galley... |
Re: Any Sportsman / Coastal owners here?
Nice boat!
I am guessing on the plates, but they look like something you would hook a table to. And I wouldnt worry about the wiring, it looks fine :o. |

Yeah...see 'em now...if it's still aboard, I think you'll find R'man to be right...there's probably a cuttin' board or somethin' that's gonna fit that ;) ... good eye, R'man!! 8) ... |
Re: Any Sportsman / Coastal owners here?
it's a table mine is gone to but i know a guy at the coast with a 250 and his still has the dining table
|
Re: Any Sportsman / Coastal owners here?
I've spent some time on a 248 with a bracket and twin 225 EVINRUDES, I didn't really like the way it was balanced. Youy had to run it up to almost 30 to get it to level out because of the added transom weight. The trim tabs would level it, but it would still sea saw quite a bit. After running that one I think a set of lighter weight engines like MERCS, or some V-4's would level it out better. But that's the impression I got from his. A better bracket probably would have helped his boat out though.

Re: Any Sportsman / Coastal owners here?
Hammer, missed your ??? about price. The boat was listed on ebay and didn't meet reserve with a high bid of $1675. It was also on Craigslist at $5k. I contacted the seller and he said he wanted $3k. After seeing it and running the motor I really couldn't argue too much about his asking price. My only concern was with the trailer. Bearings and tires in particular. The seller suggested having it hauled on a ramp truck and offered to knock the cost off the selling price. Sorry I didn't get any pics of it on the truck, it was quite a sight!
Here are some pics of the trailer: http://www.kci2.com/new/050.jpg http://www.kci2.com/new/051.jpg http://www.kci2.com/new/052.jpg http://www.kci2.com/new/053.jpg http://www.kci2.com/new/054.jpg http://www.kci2.com/new/056.jpg http://www.kci2.com/new/057.jpg I'm not sure if I should tackle all the hardware right now or just do up the brakes, bearings and tires so I can get the boat in the water ASAP. Skools, thanks for the common sense solution to the oil injection question. I slapped my forehead when I read that one! Reelapeeelin, the motor is an '86 "V6 Special". Here is an ad for it... http://www.kci2.com/new/093.jpg Yamaha didn't put a HP badge on it but the ad says it's "220HP Plus". As far as I can figure from the Seloc manual it's 2596cc and 220HP. |
Re: Any Sportsman / Coastal owners here?
Wow, TH!!...that's pretty neat...where did the Ad on the Yam come from??...I never woulda guessed an outboard was computerized that long ago 8) ...great pix ;) ...
|
Re: Any Sportsman / Coastal owners here?
reel...
where else... ebay. Somebody was trying to peddle the ad for a sawbuck. |
