transom flex?

How much flex is considered normal for a transom of an 84 V-20? I keep looking at V-20's from the 80's and the transoms always seem to flex to much for me. I checked this one out awhile back and all on it looked good with the exception of the transom seemed to move more than I liked. The flex seemed to come mostly from the top port engine mount bolt. But what do you guys consider normal for your V-20's?

Not having any better sence, but just enough to not have the motor break off.

I would hope it don't fall off. I'm just wonderin if my 270 leaning on it aint flexin em to much.

My '84 doesn't flex at all with my 220#s on the motor.

I have stood on the lower unit of my trimmed up Yamaha 200 and even bounced a little. No flex at all.

Yes, if on a trailer the trailer springs should lower before the transom flexes. Now if on blocks I can see where you might be able to flex it a little. Mine on the trailer has zero flex.

Ferm ... I look for flex ... and LISTEN for noise ... a little movement doesn't bother me as much as hearing fiberglass cracklin ... ;) ...

I'm with all so far...ZERO flex with you standing on it bouncing. Your 270 is ALLOT less poundage than that prop puts off...garanteed. ;)

That's what I figured, I just can't believe my run of luck finding boats with spongy transoms. It must be a gift or somethin. I'm going to pass on this one. It's got a nice trailer and the hull overall is nice, but the transom worry's me.

I've got to think that after 20+ years it would be hard to find a V20 withoug a little flex. For those of you who have rock solid transoms after this much time, consider yourself very lucky. The seal on the top of the transom is pretty poor on these boats. Mine has more flex that I like, but it will perform just fine until I cut into it and replace the transom.

Flounder makes a good point. Its not your bad luck as much as it is the nature of the beast. Solid transom V20s are probably the exception more than the norm, especially with the crappy transom cap they always had on them. Heck even my 18 had a little wetness in the top from the cap and its a 90 model. :-/

It would seem to me if you were to find a V20 with a completely "flexless" transom it would be either..a later model...or one of the few that was well maintained and kept covered.

I would'nt mind having one that was "less than solid", but as far as how much flex, well thats just up to the individual. What would be ok for someone else may not me to me or visa versa.

my .02 ;)

Re: transom flex?

I don't have any flex at all, O yea I have a full transom! ;D

Start lookingfor a I/O or seadrive, I garrtee you they will be solid and theres nothing better the a full transom!
Brackets are all over th place and its easy to convert!

I know you hate to have to work on one, but really you could have the back filled in and a bracket installed in 2 or 3 days if you wanted to!!

Who's going to honor this guarantee? I have a sea-drive model that is rotten, hence my looking for another boat.

Previous owner replaced the drain plug and took the time to clean everything up, but didn't bother to reseal the wood. Nice and mushy.

Well you guys are going to crucify me, but I bought a flats boat instead. Got one that is pretty nice, but needs some engine work. Pics will follow later.

Transoms really aint hard ta rebuild, and you can do it yourself and save a pile of money for something else.
