NEED HELP, ADVICE, ETC. OR A BULLET.
well, i pulled a doozy on my last trip out. thought i had a fuel problem and i was going through the process of elemination for that when i realized my oiler had no oil in it and decided to run a compression test and here are my sorry *** results. #1- 125 lbs. #2- 75lbs. #3- 130 lbs. #4- 125lbs. so, i burned up #2. what do i do? rebuild it? scrap it? buy a new or used motor? i dont really want to go through the b.s. of buying a used motor and i dont really have the money for a new one. so, i guess this is were the bullet comes in!
the motor is a 96' model mercury 125 4 cyl. |
Re: NEED HELP, ADVICE, ETC. OR A BULLET.
if you're happy with the hp, fix what you got, at least you'll know what you have. If you feel like moving up, nows the time. Keep the 125, it will give soemthing to do this winter, might be able to offset the cost of repower

Re: NEED HELP, ADVICE, ETC. OR A BULLET.
LOVE Lumbers idea.
Seems two choices: (1) run as is as long as it will go or (2)tear down and see if the sleeves are alright (and) or if its the rings or piston. Option 2 is a definate rebuild (done went this far). |
Re: NEED HELP, ADVICE, ETC. OR A BULLET.
WELL, SINCE THE FUEL PUMP WORKS OFF OF VACUM FROM COMPRESSION FROM THAT CYLINDER THE MOTOR WILL NOT IDAL. THIS IS WHY AT FIRST I THOUGHT I HAD A FUEL PROBLEM. AND YES, I DO LIKE THE E-TEC IDEA. I JUST HATE TO FINANCE SOMETHING (CANT AFFORD TO BUY ONE OUT RIGHT) BECAUSE I DIS-LIKE BILLS!

Re: NEED HELP, ADVICE, ETC. OR A BULLET.
pull it down and see what you got, if the crank is bad, give up on it and sell it for parts.

Re: NEED HELP, ADVICE, ETC. OR A BULLET.
Are you happy with the performance with a 125? If so, rebuild it. If you want some more get up and go......

Re: NEED HELP, ADVICE, ETC. OR A BULLET.
Been there done that!!
Forget it, its junk!! Buy a Used motor and save pennys for a new one at a later time!! |
Re: NEED HELP, ADVICE, ETC. OR A BULLET.
MJ, thats what a lot of people are telling me. that its junk. so, what? they wont take a rebuild well? the engine seemed to be in good shape before it ran out of oil that is. the foot seems to be good and tight. i just put on the extension kit. it has a new power pack, coils, starter, and fuel pump. all the new stuff i mention only has 15 hours or so on it. all i know is that this situation stinks. has anyone on here ever rebuilt one? if so, do they sell rebuild kits for them or do you have to buy all the parts individually? i value ALL advice so please, keep em coming fellas. i'll keep processing all options for a few days before i make a move.

Re: NEED HELP, ADVICE, ETC. OR A BULLET.
If you want to rebuild go for it!!
It is a sucky situation for sure!! I know I have been there!! I am not that ambitious, You will have to remove the power head, tear it all down, have the power head machined and so on, lots of work for sure!! To me it was much easier to just buy a used motor. There are plenty out there for a good price. Good Luck with what ever you do!! |
Re: NEED HELP, ADVICE, ETC. OR A BULLET.
just pull the head see how deep the cylinder scores are if light then just hone out the scoring and put 1 new piston and rings init and go. some motors you don't have to even open up just remove the carbs and reed cage then you and take the rod cap off and use a wooden broom handle to knock out the bad piston hone and new piston kit then use Marvel Oil to install new piston and good to go just clean the hole out well with thinner so get all metal out after honing.

Re: NEED HELP, ADVICE, ETC. OR A BULLET.
oh yeah and run double oil after rering for first 25 hours and keep under 3500 rpms

Re: NEED HELP, ADVICE, ETC. OR A BULLET.
I hate bills as well, probably the tightest sob I know. So my advice, for what it's worth, buy a good used one to run with and take your time rebuilding the old if it's worth it that is. That way next time, god forbid this happens, you'll have one sitting in the wings ready to go. Not to mention, you could then sell one if need arised to.

Re: NEED HELP, ADVICE, ETC. OR A BULLET.
Like SKOOLZ said, get the head off and see what you got first. Don't make a blind decision on it. There is still a good chance that it is just a scored cylinder wall and not a boat anchor. If you need a complete kit, these guys have always done me well(although his prices have gone up lately), there located in TAMPA.

I 2nd what Skools is sayin' ...

Re: NEED HELP, ADVICE, ETC. OR A BULLET.
some folks say that a rebuilt outboard aint worth squat. i have yet to see any evidence to that effect. go with what skoolz said. pull the head off. if ur not sure what ur lookin at give me a shout. if it does need a complete rebuild, round here ur lookin at about $45 a hole, if you do the work yourself. with 75# on that cylinder, my guess is ur probably in good shape. might be able to put a ring set on it and go. whatever route you take, get an alarm on that oil tank!

Re: NEED HELP, ADVICE, ETC. OR A BULLET.
Do a one hole fix . . . Don't go crazy. I think you have to pull the entire motor apart to get a good look. 75psi you haven't screwed it up too bad . . . Have a shop clean up the one hole and find a new piston/ring/bearings (for that 1 hole) . . . I doubt you'll have to bore it and run an oversized piston, but that's your worst case senerio . . . and yank that oil injection off. I swear that must be the #1 cause of engine failure.
