First trip in the salt with the 250
This is the symbol of the guy that used to be known as the Artist Formerly Known as Prince.
http://www.monkeybutler.com/boat/2007_0707/1a.jpg And this is the symbol of the guy formerly known as Tally Ho.... http://www.monkeybutler.com/boat/2007_0707/1b.jpg The new boat is going to be named the Monkey Butler hence the new handle. I've owned the domain name www.monkeybutler.com for some time and eventually I'll get a website put up. I took some vaction and I've been off work since the 4th puttering around with the boat. I had a problem with a mid-range bog in the motor so I didn't feel comfortable going out in the ocean yet. I was waiting on carb kits so in the meantime we had a few outings on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester. A 25 footer doesn't make an ideal bassboat but in a pinch...... http://www.monkeybutler.com/boat/2007_0707/2a.jpg Well the parts didn't come in on Friday as expected but I tore down the carbs anyway, cleaned 'em and reassembled with the old gaskets. Took it out on the lake again and ran like a new motor. So Saturday morning we were 69.3 miles away from the MOB marker I punched in on the lake... http://www.monkeybutler.com/boat/2007_0707/2b.jpg http://www.monkeybutler.com/boat/2007_0707/2c.jpg Let me introduce the crew. Admiral Junkbottom... http://www.monkeybutler.com/boat/2007_0707/3a.jpg Oldest kid and only daughter Nicole... http://www.monkeybutler.com/boat/2007_0707/3b.jpg Oldest son Tyler... http://www.monkeybutler.com/boat/2007_0707/3c.jpg And the youngest, Brian... http://www.monkeybutler.com/boat/2007_0707/3d.jpg And yours truly... http://www.monkeybutler.com/boat/2007_0707/3e.jpg BTW, there is a toe shot hidden in one of the above pictures for ya' Stink Man. We caught some scup, tried our luck for stripers, and ducked into a sheltered beach when the famous Buzzards Bay afternoon chop blew up, along with every other boat on the bay... http://www.monkeybutler.com/boat/2007_0707/4.jpg Here is a link to a short Movie that we threw together (~3mb) http://www.monkeybutler.com/boat/2007_0707/BuzzBay.wmv All in all a great day. Hope you all had a great 4th. Steve P. |

Re: First trip in the salt with the 250
Great pics, great video. *I wish I had more of those skills! *Looking forward to more.
Looks like the 250 pushes that boat quite well! |
Re: First trip in the salt with the 250
Way to go Steve! Glad you and your family had fun together. Did you launch at Maco's in Wareham? Video is great too. Awesome job. LMAO @ "the guy formerly known as Tally Ho" Oh wait a minute, did you change your name because of the Rev. Al Sharpton? he don't like anyone being called "Ho" LMFAO! ;D

Re: First trip in the salt with the 250
Well done Steve, the 250 is looking sweet, I think that is the perfect all around size for a boat, especially if it is going to be a family boat a good percentage of the time. Very nice ;)

Re: First trip in the salt with the 250
great pictures there and an awsome video ;D ;D ;D

Re: First trip in the salt with the 250
Thank you everyone for the compliments on the pics and the movie. Now that my kids showed me how to work Windows Movie Maker I'll be using it more often. It's great to be able to string together the 15 second movie clips that I can take with my digital camera.
Shawsee, I lauched from Taylor Point, in Bourne. Good ramp and facilities for $10. I'm not familiar with Maco's, is it the place just across the bridge? Any closer to getting the brakes yet? And yep, the Rev. got ahold of me and said if I didn't get all PC and declare myself a Ho free zone he was gonna shake me down. Plus it looks like my name was already taken... http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n...s/talleyho.jpg image courtesey of Spareparts I'm really happy with the boat. It's not too big or heavy, my 1/2 ton Suburban pulls it just fine. The cabin is actually big enough to be useful and there is still a good size cockpit left over. The enclosed head is more trouble than it's worth for guys but it does solve the biggest problem once you bring a girl aboard. Performance is good enough for me with the 220HP motor but since it is 21 years old (and requires 93 octane gas) I'm keeping my eyes open for a good used repower. I'd like to stick with a Yamaha, probably a 225 or 250 but 300HP would be fun, any recommendation on years or models to look for? One gripe I have is that there is no anchor or rope storage in the bow. I can probably make a pulpit but I'm looking for ideas on rode storage. Steve P. |
Re: First trip in the salt with the 250
I would reccomend a late 90's 250HP YAMMAHA OX66 if your looking for a easy replacement and reliability.
|
Re: First trip in the salt with the 250
I remember back in the mid 90's that the 250 Yami's changed from being GAS HOGS (1 mpg on a 25 ft boat)to doing pretty good on gas (3 mpg on a 25 ft boat), just be sure to get the latter.

Re: First trip in the salt with the 250
the VX-76 250( had 6 1 bbl carbs) was the fuel drinkinest motor to ever be bolted on the back of a boat(except for the V8 Johnrudes). They told me in Yamaha school it burned between 41 and 44 gph @wot, they used excess fuel to cool the combustion chamber and keep it from blowing up. The OX series fuel injected motors were far better

Re: First trip in the salt with the 250
EXCESS FUEL?? ??? ?? ... boy, now THERE'S a term from a different time ::) ... back when oil company magnates were shrewd businessmen instead of the GREEDY-A$$ Bean-Counters they are today ::) ...
...anyway MB...great trip in the 250!! 8) ...and I REELY like the white bikini lower left of last pic ... GREAT camera work 8) 8) ... |
Re: First trip in the salt with the 250
i have one customer that has a VX76, he said he keeps it around 3500 and it doesn't do too bad( he can buy a lot of fuel for what a 4 stroke cost), what you have to watch for on those motors is the enrichner circut, they can leak fuel and make it burn even more

Re: First trip in the salt with the 250
The excess fuel that most are accustomed to seeing come out of a 2-stroke is due to the inneficiency of a 2-stroke engine. Every time that a 2-stroke brings in air to the cylinder the exhaust port is also open at the same time. So some of the fuel-air mixture that was just drawn into the combustion chamber is lost through the exhaust, this is where most of the unburned fuel comes from. In the older cross-flow engine roughly 20-30% of the intake charge went out the exhaust unburnt. The newer looper's supposedly got this down to 8-15%.
In a direct comparison I have an 83 115 cross-flow engine and an 85 140 looper. The 115 burns roughly 11-12 GPH @ 4200, and my 140 with more HP burns about 8 GPH at the same RPM. And then you can compare a carb motor to an injected motor. The injected motor use's less fuel at idle since the fuel is injected under pressure which helps it atomize, where as a carb motor relies on vacuum from the engine to pull the fuel in and atomize it. Unfortunately 2 stroke's(espescially loopers) don't have very good vacuum at idle, so more fuel gets lost unburnt. And then you have the excess fuel for oiling reasons since the fuel actually carries the engines life-blood. And so on and so on. DISCLAIMER: Most of this information is POOMA and is not guarranteed. I am in no way an engineer or designer, just a dumb hick who can decipher some of there code. |
Re: First trip in the salt with the 250
"POOMA" I like that term, i will use it a lot in the future :D
put it right up there with SWAG, PITA, and "No , I've never heard of that problem before, but I have a kit to fix it" |
Re: First trip in the salt with the 250
Snatch the bracket and outboard off that thing and install a I/O and go boating for a lot less in fuel cost.
:D 8) ::) |
Re: First trip in the salt with the 250
And endless repairs!!
|
Re: First trip in the salt with the 250
inboard, outboard, I/O, they all break, job security for me! ;D
